i used to work in wig store next to Woolworth on Hollywood Blvd.when I first came to america I remember the best cabbage roll from the kitchen/coffee shop in Woolworth and BLT. , It was 1970 Longgggg ago.
Washington, DC's F Street was the heart of flagship stores til the"70"s. At it's peak, Woodward & Lothrop ("Woodies"), Garfinkel's, Raleigh's, Lansburgh's, Hecht Co., L. Frank's, Jelleff's - all were part of childhood memories especially during the holiday season.😢
What's tragic is that many of these stores fell because of bad management. Ames was my favorite but there were no personnel to help when many items were not priced. You forgot Zodys. That was a good store too.
Zales Jewelers, Bed, Bath and Beyond, Fashion Bug -- those were some favorites of mine, and we had them in southern California. Anyone know what happened to Victoria's Secret?
You should have mentioned Gimbels Korvettes Lord and Taylor S Klein. Stein Mart Pergament Woolworth Consumer Distributing. Radio Shack Pier One Sears Abraham and Straus Bon Ton to name a few
@@gregmarino5248 I forgot about Radio Shack! Staff was always so helpful and they carried all kinds of gadgets. Purchased my late husband, who was a musician, a disco ball for his music room as a joke and he loved it!
Remember the Sears and Monkey Wards Christmas catalogs? Then there was the Speigels catalog. Anyone remember Speigels? The internet and online shopping has spoiled these experiences for everyone! Awhile back, I actually acquired a copy of a Speigal catalog. Apparently, they're still in print, but it was soooo skinny! Not much in it.
Murphy's was a store that shut down when i was really little and replaced with a dollar general after sitting empty for quite awhile, my mom loved it though and with these pictures i can see why.
Ames wasn't considered a department store, it was considered an outlet/bargain outlet/discounter first of its kind in our area and it was the anchor store of the small mall in town. it was also degraded/derogatorily called "China Outlet" or "Big China Outlet" as it was the first store in the area with a lot of products that were marked as made in china or taiwan/r.o.c. or vietnam or other asian countries instead of made in america/usa or england or france or germany or something. didnt know Ames bought Hills, Hills was a store my dad made trips 30-60 minutes away two or three times a year to shop at as a destination
Walmart & Target took over just bcoz they’re giants , it’s an understatement to say for better prices ! Their prices are ridiculous, can’t ever get someone to help you or “ I don’t work in that department!” I personally like to look at my stuff , decide if I want , to order online, not my cup of tea ! People even order cars online , nope I need to test drive ! I would rather walk in to borders , enjoy a book with coffee & some friends , you can’t do that online !
Sadly with the theft being so rampant, more and more will be going to buy online with their brick and mortar stores becoming little more than fulfillment centers.
If I hear an employee say, "I don't work in that department," my swift reply would be, "Then find me someone who DOES work in that department" And if I'm really frustrated, I might add, "You lazy bum!"

Lechmere failed in Tampa Bay Area. Cause they insisted on keeping 9-5 hours closed Sundays against the local malls which were opened 10-9 and on Sundays
Borders Books, drinking Joe Mugs Coffee in Grapevine Mills-TX, OMG miss K-Bee Toys for Christmas-we came out with bags full at decent prices, Steve & Barrys was the best at $7.98 for anything when it opened (the best Heavy sweatshirts ever) and for sure Toys r Us. Too many favorites gone forever!

76yrs , I wear a size 51/2- 6 shoes, could hit the $1.99 sales a get all the window samples. Penny 's warehouse closed in Milwaukee, still have shoes in the box😅😅😅.
Payless really helped me when they told me I could find shoes in the children's section in equivalent sizes to my size in ladies shoes, if I didn't like the styles or colors in the ladies section. A 7 1/2 in ladies size is the equivalent, fit-wise, of a 5 1/2 in kids' size. I bought shoes in both sections, and they all fit perfectly.

We had an Ames' in South Lawrence MA! Loved going there with my kids when they were little and shop there. All the things we bought and the toys! Loved Ames. Good times. 👍😊
i used to work in wig store next to Woolworth on Hollywood Blvd.when I first came
to america I remember the best cabbage roll from the kitchen/coffee shop in Woolworth and BLT. , It was 1970 Longgggg ago.
Yes! Woolworth's BLTs , chocolate malts, real ones, and sno cones! I love woolworths, also, in early '60s!😊
I remember those stores especially Hecht at Christmas
What's tragic is that many of these stores fell because of bad management.
Ames was my favorite but there were no personnel to help when many items were not priced.
You forgot Zodys. That was a good store too.
I miss those stores Montgomery ward, Service merchandise, Sears, Kmart, Best, Toys r us, jcpenney catalog, Lerners, Mervyns etc. I miss it.
@@gregmarino5248
I forgot about Radio Shack! Staff was always so helpful and they carried all kinds of gadgets. Purchased my late husband, who was a musician, a disco ball for his music room as a joke and he loved it!
I remember Pier One Imports. We had one of those in our mall in Carlsbad, CA.
I love Sharper Image. It was so much fun.
I don’t know I’m from Chicago so it’s not a small town. I haven’t heard of half of these stores. Where’d you come up with these?
Yeah,Woolworth, I miss them😢
I still miss Woolworth store. My mom and other relatives loved Monkey Ward Christmas sales.
I can't think of s single modern retailer that does anything to set its stores apart with welcoming ambience, wide selection, and helpful service.
There still are a few. But their numbers are dwindling.
Murphy's was a store that shut down when i was really little and replaced with a dollar general after sitting empty for quite awhile, my mom loved it though and with these pictures i can see why.
Ames wasn't considered a department store, it was considered an outlet/bargain outlet/discounter first of its kind in our area and it was the anchor store of the small mall in town. it was also degraded/derogatorily called "China Outlet" or "Big China Outlet" as it was the first store in the area with a lot of products that were marked as made in china or taiwan/r.o.c. or vietnam or other asian countries instead of made in america/usa or england or france or germany or something.
didnt know Ames bought Hills, Hills was a store my dad made trips 30-60 minutes away two or three times a year to shop at as a destination
the Ames was replaced by a Ollie's Bargain Outlet eventually btw
I miss Motts 5 and Dime store … and Gibson’s and Montgomery Ward and especially K-mart
What about Kmart and Perry’s or even Office Depot and JC Penny’s
Office Depot, and Staples is the other office supply store in our area, the inland northwest.
Exactly how I think
Online is bad choice for clothes especially.🤦♀️
Sadly with the theft being so rampant, more and more will be going to buy online with their brick and mortar stores becoming little more than fulfillment centers.
If I hear an employee say, "I don't work in that department," my swift reply would be, "Then find me someone who DOES work in that department" And if I'm really frustrated, I might add, "You lazy bum!"
@@jrnfw4060 here in my hometown we’ve got a grocery store named Lowe’s , I walk & noticed 3 cashiers , 2 lights on meaning they’re checking! I grab my groceries put them on the register , the checker saw me but still took off ! I walk to where she’s at ask her “ aren’t you checking?” Says no go to # 1 , I grab my things go to # 2 accidentally. The other checker says “ go to # 1” I grab my stuff & said “ oh shit “ the checker heard me & says “ now now “ I said isn’t there a checker @ # 3 ? Yes , I took my groceries there & she refused to check me out !😡 The checker in # 1 said “ she’s cold & trying to warm up!” Well she can go home & hibernate, if it’s too cold for her , find someone that can take her place !😡 It was only 54 degrees ( Texas ) I hate to see when it snows , she’d better find another job !
How about Radio Shack?
Lechmere? Steve And Barrys? Am i in some other dimension?
Those are New England stores.
In California I never heard of those.
@@emmel4fun I'm in SE Flroay: neither have I.
We had a Steve and Barry’s in Forest Fair Mall.
@@emmel4fun Chicago here I never heard of more than half of these!
Radio Shack is online. I do miss the store in the demolished Eastfield Mall in Springfield, MA
The sharper image was fun, but I ever bought anything. Boarders was cool because you could listen to the music before you bought. Well after I was a kid I would love to go to KB Toys and Toys R Us just to see what cool things kids got at the time. I miss shopping in person. I hate ordering online and not getting to try things on or check the quality.
One of several reasons why hubby and I DON'T shop online.
never heard of crown books and only vaguely heard of borders as an obscure competitor to barnes and noble and amazon, and even barnes and noble was obscure and didnt have any stores anywhere near where i grew up.
after i moved to north carolina they have a really good bookstore here called books a million that seems very similar to the borders that is talked about here. not sure if they are still open though.
Guess it depends upon what part of the country you live in. I miss May D & F, Neustetters, The Denver Dry, Fashion Bar, & a couple that have been mentioned; Woolworth's & Montgomery Wards. We used to have a small store called Gibson's that was great. WM took it down. I never go into walmart if I can help it. Maybe once a year, Can't stand that place.
Lechmere failed in Tampa Bay Area. Cause they insisted on keeping 9-5 hours closed Sundays against the local malls which were opened 10-9 and on Sundays
Grants, TG&Y,
Sears Christmas
Catloge....k mart
Gloria Jeans Coffee.....
Grants! Dad was a manager for grants...when I was a kid, If it didn't come from Grants, we didn't have it!
Borders sound so much like Barne's Nobles. It was a brand new store here in Tracy, at the mall, & didn't last long at all. Now it's a sports store.
To me Barn's Noble was better. I even liked Hasting better than Borders.
We had both but borders was way better. I miss borders.
Merry go round used to play great music over the PA system.
What about F&M, Arlans,Cunninghams,A&P, Great Scotts, Odd Lot, Federals,Lerners,PayLess shoes and many more! 6:52
In the Sharper Image Segment what Are Ace lees? Does your AI mean aisles?
And zodys I miss that store I worked there
Venture, Carson Pirie Scott, Payless Shoe, Spiegel?!?🥰
What about Zayre (bought by Ames), Gold Circle, Rinks, SS Kreske, Rexall Drugs, Blockbuster?
Remember how much fun it was to go into blockbusters to get a movie you couldn’t wait to see
@@betsyr4724 There is still one privately owned Blockbuster store in Bend, Oregon.
I miss Sharper Image.
I still miss Borders, Kmart, and Woolworth
Methuen Mall had a Merry Go Round and my freind worked there while l worked at a nursing home and worked as a contract cleaner at IRS Andover. On my day off l used to hang out at the Methuen Mall and buy a few pairs of blue jeans from the Merry Go Round while having lunch with my freind on her break. Good times. 👍😊
Shopping on line has destroyed many stores.
Hubby and I refuse to shop online, for several reasons. This being one of them.
When Ames was going out of business, I bought a grandfather clock from them about 20 years ago. I still have it.
The funding stopped by greed and selfishness for past fifty years.
I'm a Medicare card-carrying senior citizen. I've not heard of any of these places except for Borders, Crown Books, Spencers and KB Toys.
I'm 70 and I've been to many. Lots of chains have closed. Not all are national chains. Doesn't mean they didn't exist.
The AI voice on this is awful.
I am sick of AI scripts and even more turned off by AI narration. The only question is how long into the video before I SMH. Remember when there used to be people?
The first glitch surprised me because there were like 5 in a row… then it happened again and I could almost see the loop in the matrix.
Yes, I agree. It’s horrible!!! 😢
These AI voices need to be edited properly so you can at least have an acceptable listening experience.
Leckmeer. Lechmer. LEACH-MEER!
We had Globe stores in Houston.
And gc Murphy's had a small grill area where you could stop and eat
Interesting/informative/entertaining. I wonder how many retail stores in California will bankrupt due to high volume shop lifting-???🤔. How many employees have & will loose their lively hood due to the $900.00 limit on arresting a street thug-???🤔.
Isn't just california
That's such a shame!
That is SO criminal! And SO crazy! The powers that be have actually made shoplifting LEGAL! Just what planet are we living on, these days???
I loved to go to Borders for coffee. ☕️
Sharper Immage hands on was a must stop at the mall...
Sharper Image was fun.
I loved Borders better than Barnes Noble. I could always find great Books and Music in the store 😥
I enjoyed the Border’s book store in Ann Arbor, Michigan. It was considered the Mecca of all types of books and magazines. I was disappointed when the chain closed.📚
Anyone remember W T Grant's? It was a department store, very similar to Montgomery Ward. Dad was a manager for them in the 60s, before they bellied up.
Anyone remember Ben Franklin? It and Woolworths were the OG dollar stores.
These types of articles regularly negate the fact that the original owners and employees with reliable good work ethics eventually reache retirement age also.(Decide to close, sell or pass on the business Changing of the Gard, new owners management which hasn't been as knowledgeable skilled or deacated as the originals. Fedco-Woolworth-Montgomery ward-thrifty-just to name a few I remember
I remember all of those. And K-Mart. We had a Thrifty's just up the hill from where we lived in downtown Oceanside, CA. I used to walk there and back. Their customer service wasn't the greatest, but they were convenient. I remember J.C. Penneys, too. Shopped in all of those stores.
