17 Old Kitchen Features.. That Have FADED Into History
My grandmother told me how she went to the butcher to get a bucket of water in which sausages were cooked. She uses that water to make pea soup and if you where lucky there where small pieces of meat in it .
I still eat biscuits and gravy
Surely, any good Great Depression recipe must involve road kill? I mean, deserts with cinamon, vanilla, eggs, sugar, butter, raisins? Really? That's no Great Depression, that's a stay in the Ritz. All you need for a real meal is road kill, nettles or dandilion leaves (free) and some dug up turnips and potatoes (free). That will keep someone going. Only "exotic" extras needed are pepper and salt....
lol...
I still stop at Stucky's every time I pass one, but it's nothing like it used to be.
5th(and mayber earlier) through 7th grade, I used to walk up to the local burger chef at least weekly. I loved their fun meals, still have some of the plastic car fun meal boxes...
When I decided to enroll in Grad school in Atlanta during trhe mid to late '70s, I took a job as a waiter in the Steak & Ale chain. They had numerous restaurants around the Atlanta area and you could work at multiplel locations. Back then, the men wore distinctive uniforms consisting of black "knickers", black socks/tights and white blousy "pirate" tops. Everyone knew where you worked as these outfits weren't exactly common around town. It was fun working these restaurants. Teachers, paramedics, lawyers and a variety of professional people took PT jobs at Steak & Ale for the good wages and the fun. The interiors were unique with rustic beams and working fireplaces. Romantic and comfortable. The menus were large meat cleavers while a giant carafe bottle served as the wine list. The food was consistent and tasty. . Families loved the place. I had my share of good times at Steak & Ale until I left. Sorry to see the chain go down.
My wife and I ate breakfast at the last Lums restaurant( in Bellevue Nebraska) on their final day of operation, may 28th 2017. We still miss the place so much. They had the best chicken-fried steak, liver and onions, chopped steak, and other diner fare. Management decided to close days earlier than expected so their final day was use-up-every-bit of-food day until nothing was left to cook.
Okay, but most of those dishes were nothing that was considered breakfast food even by my Depression Baby parents.
Welsh rabbit. Toast, hard boiled egg and white sauce. Slice the egg on the toast and pour white sauce over it.
Fried onions and baloney on bread. Easy and cheap. I grew up in the 40’s. We had American Chop Suey too. Macaroni, celery, hamburger mince, can of tomatoes, and whatever else you wanted to put in the pot.
We had noodles cheese and butter. Oh I love this. You cook up egg noodles, have a carton of cottage cheese and melted butter. You put the cooked noodles on your plate, add cottage cheese right out of the carton and pour melted butter over it-stir and eat. Delicious.
"little Black Sambo" was an innocent story about a boy in India who became a hero. The Civil Rights Movement picked it out as a lever for protesting by making language and images their weapons for control.
29:16 🎉
There really needs to be cooking classes offered around communities where these and other simple, but nutritious and easy recipes can be taught.
The added picture dust to add to the illusion of a Depression-era film is hilarious - because it's in color.
I remember godfathers the kitchen sink pizza it was like 3 lbs and had all the toppings on it
It’s called bread and butter pudding… Bread pudding is dark brown with nutmeg and cinnamon…Totally different
According to this video, growing up Mexican meant growing up like if we were in the great depression! Capirotada (bread pudding), arroz con leche (rice pudding), frijoles (beans) and anything made of masa/grits (corn meal) are daily staples. LOL
Enjoyed the video. Message from the old world. We stil make and eat 'skrapple', potatosoup and potato pancakes. O yes.... 👋
The photo is not of Marno, but of Doug Sheley, founder of D'Lites of America.
Arthur Treacher’s had a location in Reynoldsburg and Lancaster until not too long ago but I think there's only 1 or 2 up in the Cleveland area now. Such a shame, that was a favorite of mine for over half my life. But Chi-chis is the one that hurts most. I live in Chicago now with access to real Mexican food, but Chi-Chi's had a seafood enchilada that I still dream about.
A lot of these meals are still served in my home.
Has anyone else noticed that even these cheaper foods/ingredients are now very expensive?
American will serve this recipes again because of trump tariff.
🇬🇧 bread pudding, and also bread and butter pudding
Why would you include Golden Coral in a video about defunct buffets? There are 100’s, they are in every state.
Excellent video! 🏆 A MUST watch! Most useful, even during today's inflation..🤩
I've eaten at most of these. Some were never in Ohio, where I've lived all my 72 years ...loved Ponderosa. Worked for one month in a management trainee program at a Sambo's outside Cincinnati after being laid off from my newspaper job. But found a job at another newspaper after that one month !!!
With the biscuits and gravy try adding a can of peas and tuna instead.
Back in 1967 my mom dropped off a pot of baked beans ( crockery bean pot ) for a lunch for some church group . When she picked up the pot , there was a crust of bread in the wiped clean pot . Mom loved the compliment !
Great Depression never needed, we are scarcity rules,,,J Fresco The Venus Project
We went to Sambos many times on Sunday after church. The breakfast was ok but the steak was awful.
I knew my favorite cake mom taught me to make was a depression eara cake. That chocolate cake mom had me make so many times I had it memorized. Then again mom and dad were depression babies. I still make it whenever I need one quick.
Is cornmeal mush like polenta?
My parents were depression era kids and at 64 I still make many of these. Looks like some lean times coming and will be pulling out the recipes again. Stock up on your shelf stable basics.
ChiChis Twice Grilled BBQ Burrito was my favorite! Really miss it!
...when you can't pronounce, "Treacher's" properly...
People today have no idea what it’s like to survive with little.
Is this a sign of what’s to come ? Elon musk saying there will be hardships ? Time to stock up on canned beans ??
I miss you Bennigans Big Irish burger and Monte Cristo ...so damn good
Too many chains were basically ponzi schemes.
Half the time the AI talked about bread pudding it showed a Flan. It also repeats itself when talking about how baked beans were made and repeated how to make baked beans.👎
I’ve had a lot of these growing up…cornmeal mush brings back a lot of good memories!
Have never seen a recipe for actual baked beans!
My mom made bread pudding for us when we were children. I’m 64, so it’s been a while. My mom said she had bread pudding growing up and her mother had bread pudding quite often. My mom made her bread pudding with cinnamon and raisins, and we all loved it. I still make it today on occasions. What a fascinating video this is!
I actually have had and like and eat regularly peanut butter with Mayo
"take you back when casual dining was more than just a microwave burger..." Sorry but HOJO's were really just as gulity. I went to cooking school in the early 80's (IK I'm dating myself) and had a classmate who worked at HoJo's before and he said the only skill you really need there is to know how to operate a can opener!
Flan images as bread pudding?
My mother used to cook these foods for eleven children.
Depression food…I call them comfort foods; reminiscent of simpler childhood days from the 70’s.
