Simple Pedals For Everyone

- Are simple pedals better? Since the dawn of time, we have been trying to figure out whether more features on a pedal equals more value. It sounds like a simple solution. If bigger is better, then by the same logic more features must make a better guitar pedal, right?
...Not necessarily.
In this week's episode, I want to share some of my favorite pedals that get the job done with no fuss. They always sound good, they don't leave you hanging, and you don’t need an instruction manual the size of War and Peace to figure them out. It’s a win-win.

It sounds like Nick has a whole 80s college radio station in his fingers and I'm so here for it. Great jams.
The wierdest part is Josh actually looks pretty normal with no eyebrows.
switch_cave: Having a son like Nick is enough to make any man’s eyebrows fall out. It’s called PARENTAL STRESS and poor Josh is wearing it on his face.
tbh, i wouldn't have realised he didn't have any eyebrows on the video
He has never had eyebrows. I even mentioned this to him months ago. Lol.
I used to have 2 eyebrows...then I shaved the top one off.
Oh well, his nickname will never be "Monobrow".
Nick, get your dad on the show to discuss his pedal journey with you and Josh.
ASAP!!!
That would be dope. I’ll see if that can be arranged.
Who is Nicks dad?
Josh IS Nick’s father. Can’t you see the uncanny resemblance?
@@jts3339 LOL! It isn't in the eyebrows, that's for sure.
...meanwhile, Reverb just released a fifteen minute demo for the Strymon Nightsky, which has more functions than some synths...
😂 well said.
My brother bought a Timeline and it sounds great but I am just intimidated by the thought that I'm not getting enough tone from it. I'd rather just trust that it sounds good than worry about all the perceived loss of tone
The new Strymon Nightsky is well beyond just a another reverb pedal. It's a synthverb, and I've never seen that before! Very cool.
Yeah I want it but I use reverb in a utilitarian fashion I don’t have reverb on my amp. It would be too much of an insane reverb option.
And I will buy one.
"We're not making math, we're making art." There's the bumper sticker I want!
What about math rock?
In Australia we call it (CORRECTLY btw) MATHS. Its short for mathematicS. Doh!!
WE - the sticker WE. ALL. NEED!
Polyphia murmurs some curse words
The true language of the universe.
Father's who shilly-shally with their pedal board are likely to have offspring who become drummers
My son helps me build my pedalboards....and he’s 7. He’ll be a badass drummer.
But “shilly-shally,” tho 😂👍🏻👍🏻
Shilly-shally, huh? Ok.
Funny, mine became a classical guitarist!
Aidan Dorrian no one who larps under the name Aidan Dorrian is older than 16
Pedalbot 5000 is NOT going to be happy that Nick is doing this episode.
"Throws drink on Pedalbot 5000" Fixed!
I used to like Nick. Nick was a cool guy. Then, I realized Nick the drummer is a better guitarist than I am. I don't even play drums. Now, I hate Nick more than Pedalbot 5000 does....
i knew there were two of him, with all the work he does.
How did he do that?
There's other nick filming and other one taking out the trash...
I think the Nik on drums is Josh in a Nik costume. And filming this is Addison.
Nick is emulating Josh's style at presenting to an uncanny level.
Josh and I have worked together for like 10 years so we kinda share a brain.
@@nixtapes7867 What pedal is that?
Or maybe Josh was preempting Nick's style with his prescient super powers....
This is a super old comment at this point but I don't think that's what's happening at all. I think he killed it and did great. Super informative.
@@nixtapes7867well put 😅
I really like it when josh does the show.
I really like it when nick does the show.
I think I just really like the show.
Also hot take: JHS is just Josh and a bunch of nick clones.
Also there's the nice bass guy, I can't recall his name right now
"We're not trying to make math, we are trying to make art." THIS MUST BE THE NEXT JHS SHIRT!

Definitely
Your drummer is really good, it's like he knows exactly what you are going to play.
One of these days you guys are going to run out of awesome ideas for for videos and you'll be forced to do one about bass pedals. And when that day comes... I'll be there, ready and waiting to watch! So look out buddy boy!
@Toxic Potato I'll have you know I change my strings at least once year whether they need it or not! And I don't know about fingers my tone come from my...well let's just say I have a very big tone.
Nicks playing with himself again on camera
Came here to say this. The first time I did something similar that’s the title I used.
How did he do that?
@@timchalmers1700 Mitosis
Tim Chalmers either green screen or just splitting the frame... I’ve got a few videos on my channel doing it myself. You just play along to whichever side you record first and leave the camera in the same spot, then edit them together... if you’re using a lot of mics and wanting a good mix and also doing multiple angles/cuts and takes, it can be a nightmare of a workflow between DAW and video editing tho
Nick is that friend that everyone has that is just cool all the time. No ifs ands or buts, you want to have fun and chill, call a Nick.
Yeah, Nick. Nick's a real name. Nick's your buddy. Nick's the kind of guy you can trust, the kind of guy you can drink a beer with, the kind of guy who doesn't mind if you puke in his car, Nick!
I like the fact that Josh is like "Santa" , and he has "little helpers" that wear Kansas City hats ... and they ROCK, ... when Santa leaves town
My favorite JHS show episode. To the point, lots of tasteful music in different genres. Love the song writing!
The level of quality you guys deliver week in week out is astonishing. The jams are insane. The content always entertaining. And having Nick as a backup for Johs is like having Tom Hanks as an understudy for DeNiro.
"You should get off of TH-cam because it's your nap time..." Hilarious!!!
Next t-shirt please.
I love that they are givin' a spotlight to the Julia Chorus, which is almost a direct competitor to the JHS Emperor. That is so down to earth, love it! And btw, I own the Emperor, it is a KILLER pedal, go and buy it now everyone :)
The moment the first jam starts and I realise there are 2 Nicks.
So *that’s* how you get so much done!
Absolutely love this show.
As much as I love Josh, this is fast becoming my favourite video - more Nick, please!
I'm also a massive sucker for great video editing (another big reason why this channel is the greatest).
I always end up thinking, “if they released these jams, I’d buy them....”
I wish there were links so you could buy them on iTunes
Once in every month, Josh need consider giving Nick doing an episode like this. His compositions are amazing by the way. Respect 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
See Nick rock. Rock, Nick, rock!
Great video, and great demo jams. Thanks for this.
2:05 Nick cloooned himself! Josh, it’s a clooone!
Is he a clone or is he just modded?
Nicks got a pedal that's puts him in 2 places at once. I need that pedal so I don't have to go to work
Truth! Thanks for letting people know they only need a few knobs to turn.
"Dont't worry, we are going to have fun"
THAT PUT MY MIND AT EASE MAN
great stuff
Simple pedals are better
also 3:27 "this knob has all kinds of mysteries"
I’m waiting for a pedal where one of the knobs is just labeled “Knob” and the manual says, “It does... things.”
@@joermnyc It'd be banned in England so Andertons couldn't sell it
Tbh Julia is a pretty complicated pedal as far as choruses go. CE-2 would be more fitting
You show is amazing. And your editing style is really high class. You can tell you're passionate about this through the screen. Keep up the good work.
it just reassured me with my attitude towards pedals, but yes... i really were put at ease
That chorus and vibrato was pretty elaborate
I came here to say this
Well, maybe it's because Julianna made it even more tricky
I think they might be a lil jealous of it because it can do both at the same time unlike the emperor
There was a touch of Tom Petty's 'Refugee' in that jam. Nice.
Good on you mate, we need to see you more often, I just cleaned my pedalboard yesterday and kept only the simple ones and the one I made, most of the keepers are vintage simple pedal.
Good for you, Josh! I hope that my son will take over my business one day, too. My advice: Pay him enough to become something, but not enough to do nothing.
Nick is his son? I never knew...
Krumpus Plunk: They have to go on Maury to have their DNA checked to be sure, but I can almost hear it: “Josh, you ARE the father!”
John Loux is Nick's dad. And he's a badass. Find him on Insta.
Jon Newquist: Josh is going to be surprised when he finds out Nick has another dad. I think they all need to go on Maury to keep Josh involved in Nick’s life after the DNA and lie detector results come out.
I'm soooooo happy that Julia made the cut! One of my VERY favorite pedals on my board!
Home run Nick! As I age, I crave more simplicity. Personally, i want to create & record music, not be a nasa nerd behind a mixer board , getting sucked down a black hole of option-paralysis. "It's not daily increase but daily decrease; Hack away at the inessential." Anyway, thumbs up. Post Script: I was mildly surprised to not see the Remedial Fuzz by J Gore.
oops, quote by Bruce Lee
I'm glad that you guys do this
Antisocialites: 2017 record of the year.
Alvvays: band of the decade.
Ah a Toronto band!
Nice job Nick, channel is in good hands.
JHS Show vlogs are so good. Thanks!! Fun to see more Nick! josh really did leave, didn't he?
Thanks for the awesome video! I love when Nick is in the videos!
Love the eyebrow joke!
Nice! One of my favorite albums on record time!
Great episode. Nicely done Nick, awesome playing....um, both of you!
And greetings from Jackson, MS. Ask Josh if he's ever been there. 🎸
Woohoo Nick! Y’all one of my favorite tag team duos
Great job on the talking parts and on the music, Nick!
Glad that dude got the spotlight on this video. Great stuff as always
“Daddy you give me some pedalboard PTSD” 😂
Really liking the "Ride The Night Wave" ideas/tones Nick!
Thanks
NixTapes is there a video link or audio recording of this new wave song? It’s great. This is the kind of music I would love to play.
Hey look everybody - it's Nick! Nice job, dude.
Nice to hear everything in the mix. very good step up and sounds great!!!!
Josh needs his eyebrows coloured? That is what Sharpies are for.
He's probably getting a weave tho
We love hearing from Nick!
Love antisocialies, favorite song has to be either Plimsoil Punks or Hey. Also even though Nick did this episode why does it still scream JOSH!! Great stuff guys!
Awesome job Nick! You should get out from behind the drum kit more often.
"Cowboy Pasta" was eerily reminiscent of a Go! Tsunami song. Dig it
The JHS Tidewater is one of few ways to get an affordable sine wave trem. Most trems are squares or triangles. If sine's offered, it's usually one feature on an expensive multi-feature trem. The Tidewater is an amazing pedal and the price is more than fair.

"Cowboy pasta" is my new jam!!!

Definitely a banger.
Hell yeah
Slap a whistling melody on that and you're golden. Also - I may have screaming lyrics to Zombie Stew.
Nick did a great job, not sure if he was channeling josh or flat our making fun of him, either way great job dude!
Josh and I have been working together for 10 years. We sorta share a brain at this point. Hahahaha
I got my hopes up that Josh would show up at the end lookin' like Eugene Levy
Well done, Nick.
Not sure I would call the Julia a simple chorus lol. Simple chorus is like a CE-2
or, even simpler, the MXR MicroChorus.
Sounded awesome though. But I agree. Was not expecting to see the Julia.
Actually, I think Nick just sold me on the Julia!
@@Scrammy103 the Julia is a great pedal. Out of the 8 chorus pedals I own, it's definitely my favorite one, but out of those it is also the most elaborate.
Exactly what I thought when he pulled that one out.
Nice to see more Nick. Great jam btw.
Nick, you're not Josh but every day you look a little more like him and well I guess that's a good thing ;)
nice job
oh, and play more guitar on the channel - you rock!
I’m finding even my new delay/reverb pedals are pretty simple. Thank God! There are way more complicated versions, but that would be way ahead if my skill set. At this point, I’m super grateful for simple.
I want to see a pedal that adds attack, color & definition to notes. Call it "Eye Brows".
Shout-out once again to Delvon, the invisible bassist. You the real MVP.
im not even finished with the episode and im into nick presenting.. absolutely killed it man and made that tele scream
“Cowboy Pasta” is SIIIIIICK
Awesome Job Nick! Could we get an episode where you run through your drum recording set up, please? It's some of the best drums Ive ever heard!
Damn Nick. Seriously, you need to do an episode just on how you get your snare sound.
I think he said on an old Q&A episode it’s an SM57 plugged into a Color Box...
@@joermnyc Rookie rodgre hasn't seen every episode pssshhh lol
Love this video, thank you Nick! I used to be a bigger pedal head but the immense amount of features on more complex pedals, plus the jock-ish culture of it all made me a tuner, mini tubescreamer and boss DD-20 kind of person. Starting to get back into pedals (looking at some jhs ones rn, the bonsai sounds so cool!), but more and more I'm finding the less options you have, the more creative you can get. The limitation can be really fun and get you to push your current pedals for more sounds!
I'm surprised about the observation being "jockish", I mean I am not comparing the same kind of cultures and types of players/scenes as you're referring towards because the big pedal nerd scenes are some of rhe nicest, openminded and welcoming to all types of pedals (and I'f
Not, then modify it ya dingus:P)
May I suggest some channels?
More well known are the awesome coffee and riffs channel for
Playing, then the same company as that (old blood noise endeavors) also had the best shit to come into a little sub type of yt genre with the channel Knobs coming out in the early to mid 2010s playing pedals indepth and a unique video style that many do now similar that's nice to just listen with no talking but captions to read the info about the pedals and great playing that's not stuck in only metal/90s rock classic rock/commercial grunge and stuff but isn't only shoegaze and dreampop sounds too with math and other genres used to not be bored and always become inspired to play something new after watching any video .
The lesser known channels are gonna take me a sec to look up for you.
I'll be back, no worries if you're not interested in this tho btw!
Was mostly curious, but went off in a excessive directions somehow lol
Here is a few more lesser known channels i like
Collector//emitter
Sorry one more sec phone wont let me see the other channels without posting my comment or having it be deleted annoyingly.
Bananna effects is really cool also.
Sorry it's not easy trying to remember all 20+ or so of the channels I wanna share to check out but my phone is making it impossible :(
One channel.is cool from.this guy who handmade makes the pedals for less than 100 bucks or so for really great quality and unique pedals on level with Alexander, strymon, and other expensive but amazing pedals and he demos the
In the videos with new ones made like every month, he has a more black metal and dark vibe for most of the pedals and a ton of unique distortion and fuzz mixing stuff that's great and similar to caitlenbreads one cat fuzz pedal I had back in the day but forgot its name,, but anyways I'll stop going on any longer as I have gone further than really wven necessary lol. My bad
Btw I don't intend to come off assuming you don't know this stuff possibly already or assume I know more or am better or trying to pull some douch shit so I hope i don't come off arrogant with this. I would love to hear about any channels recommended actually, stuff is just super exciting for me to talk about lol
Alvvays is so good! Sometimes I forget how much I like them then I put a record on and it's just... *chef's kiss*
Don't want Josh to stop doing these himself but I thought Nick did great in this. The Jams and Pedals showcased were also great and informative. Thanks!
You two are like the Batman and Robin of guitar pedals. Showing a product and always doing it's justice... Did you get it? Okay, it's enough internet for me, I know.
I love you, guys. Really. I wish you all, the team at JHS, the best. Cheers.

Lmao this video gets recommended to me literally a minute after I bought the Meris Enzo
Thanks, Nick!
Now I realise how tall Josh is. Can't see Nick's guitar over the amp!
Absolutely no one I know has ever debated whether more or less features is better. Not once.

Great show, Nick!!!
Thanks 😊
Question: what’s the intro song in all JHS episodes??? If anyone knows please let me know! 🙏🏻
The Double Nick videos are great.
Well done Nick! Are all of these really "simple" pedals? What is "simple"? I think simple should mean one effect, one on/off switch, and three knobs or less. Is Chorus/Tremolo one effect or two? I can see the argument that it's one effect across a continuum, but that's pushing for math instead of art; it's two separate effects. The Bonsai? Definitely more than a one effect. And both have more than three knobs, so there's that. Just saying.
You mean vibrato not tremolo and chorus vibrato is technically the same effect with different amounts of dry signal
@ You're right, of course, but the technicality is exactly what I was addressing. All in good fun.
What a great episode-well done Nick. For a second there when Josh went away I was expecting a scene like when Wayne left Garth alone on the air
Help stop pedal PTSD, because nobody's child should end up a drummer.
Please, *MORE* children need to end up drummers. The world is legit desperately short on good drummers.
