Sail Life - Insulating the v-berth, part 6

- Up goes the insulation, down goes my courage after discovering it takes much longer than anticipated. Knowing that my v-berth will be much more comfortable this winter is what's keeping me going right now ;) The house still hasn't sold, but I should have an update (either way) for you guys in a few days. I enjoy your resolve to problems and the attitude and forthcoming energy you put into your work. s/v Delos Crew is another favorite channel of mine, they also have positive attitudes and a great vessel and back story. You also have this great charisma and on camera presence which makes your videos a pleasure to watch and indeed look forward to.

Hi Mads, the v-berth is coming along really nicely! The white top insulation really lightens up the space, already it's looking clean, light and spacious! Once finished I reckon the cabin will become one of your favourite hang-outs ;-) Oh, and great result on the mahogany - I sense some future mahogany-based projects coming in the not too distant future ;-)
Mads, good video and I'm proud of you for standing up for your rights as a consumer. Corporations are quite used to walking all over customers and our only option sometimes is a well-voiced complaint. This project will look great when complete. Thanks again.
Ken Morgan Most Corporations are out first to make money and second to give us what we want/need, so vigilance is always good.
When buying wood in bulk I think it's almost usual that just the total number of meters of that paticular profile is calculated. There's probably a logical reason why it's still done like that today, so when you require a specific number of planks at a specific length then be very detailed when ordering.

I know this is way to late for Mads but for those looking for tips on making templates. Get some white greaseproof paper. The stuff you usually line cake tins with. Dip the paper in water which makes it ply able but still strong enough to handle. offer up the paper and push it into the corners. When the greaseproof paper dries it will be in the perfect shape for a template.
It's never too late! ;) At some point, I'll need to do the same aboard Athena. Your trick might come in handy there :) Thanks for sharing it :)
Mads, maybe a crazy idea, but I read recently that a South-African couple sold their house located in Cape Town in Austria by some kind of lottery mechanisme, its only legal in Austria. You could sell the tickets to your audience and get your asking price this way. I wouldn't mind winning your house and meeting you in Denmark for sailing trips :-)
HI Mads. What is best west system og Mas epoxy. Did I miss the comperament?
Boy, you are doing alot of work...have you thought about the condensation and where the dew point falls in the system,based on environmental conditions? A vapor barrier? General idea sounds good, but there is alot more that goes into it. Wish you luck!
Yep, you better get back here are start insulating my boat. I just don't think I will be able to do as good a job as you are doing Mads. :) haha

What type of foam are you using? Why the two different varieties?
A new metric appendage measurement. we use beesdicks for less than half a millimetre, now i know how long a buttload is :) I am rebuilding my ya ht at the moment. because i have a steel hull, i am told i cant use your system incase condensation forms behind my insulation. such a pitty as i like your design.
Great video as always mads just curious are you going to put the slats on tight or leave a gap between so you can see the white behind it?
jackrabbitslim36 Thanks :) I'm 99% sure I'll leave a small gap, but I haven't decided how big that gap is going to be :) I'll figure it out when I do a test fit (next weekend hopefully).

Jeg vil lige høre dig til, om du kan huske, hvor du købte det "billige mahogni" da jeg virkelig godt kunne tænke mig at lave en kopi af dit isolerings-projekt? The Boat List Thank you so much, Stephan :) In short my plan is to save up money for a slightly bigger boat (38-42 ft), fix it up, untie the lines and become a full-time cruiser :) Depending on what kind of boat I want to upgrade to I'll spend 2-3 years as a liveaboard in Obelix. mikko Virta That would be a good idea and it's on my list :) I'm prioritizing the areas of the hull that cause discomfort (like a wet bed or wet socks by condensation pooling on the cabin sole)

Fred folkerts I do plan on insulating under the v-berth :) First I want to try getting better ventilation under the mattress using wooden slats. That should go a long way and possibly solve the issues with the underside of the mattress being damp.
***** Mads, I've been researching that myself, as the topic of mold under mattresses comes up in so many live aboard videos. Here are two products that get mentioned in conversations in cruising / live aboard forums. +Kim Nissen Hej :) Jeg har brugt liggeunderlag fra Jysk. Det koster ca. 60 kr rullen (grå farve). Det er meget vigtigt at der er tale om lukket-celle skum - altså, skum der ikke suger vand :)
Okay det lyder helt perfekt. Hvad kostede isoleringen dig alt i alt med epoxy osv.? for jeg har lige fået en lille sejlbåd på 19.5 fod hvor det hele skal isoleres så det er bare lidt en pointer :) super godt arbejde

***** I knew you explained it earlier but damn if I could find it again. Big fan of Lea Lea too. I was coming back into the Juan de Fuca from 200 miles off shore in similar gale conditions they had on their trip to Frisco from Port Townsend. Never mind that it was in a 48ft Maple Leaf, I was sicker than a dog! On top of that our path crossed in the middle of a US carrier fleet. Talk about attention and getting buzzed by Tomcats and A6's out of Whidbey Is. In case you didn't catch it in my handle I'm a Ham as well so my interest was peeked on your progress. Getting your ham license isn't conducive to meeting women. haha.
