I keep seeing the question, “What’s a coal room?” and “Why would anyone keep a rug in such a filthy room!?” If you’re looking for an actual answer, here it is!
TL;DR: Coal rooms were used to store coal for the household fuel needs. Yes, there are still homes that have coal powered furnaces in use and still have active coal rooms. Coal rooms are lined with old rugs to contain the coal dust created when coal is delivered; because a coal dust explosion would be… bad. 💥😱
    Full explanation:
Back in the day (we’re talking 1700s, 1800s, even 1900s here), Coal was King when it came to household fuel options. It was more cost efficient than wood and safer than gas; or that new fangled electricity later on. So coal was used as fuel for everything: kitchen stove & oven, heaters & fireplaces in bedrooms and parlors, it was used to power furnaces for steam radiators, and (if you were 1800s extra) your home’s hot water system. Based on the size of the household and the climate, people could go through a literal ton of coal in a year.
Now coal is messy and leaves black dust EVERYWHERE. So people usually stored their coal in the basement; it kept the mess away from the living area and the coal conveniently near the furnace. Naturally, having the coal man walking through the house, covered in coal dust, to deliver coal to the basement would create a mess. So coal rooms and coal chutes were created.
A coal room would be built against the outside wall of the basement and a chute with a hatch at or above street level would be created. This way the coal man could drive up to the hatch, open it and shovel the coal delivery down the chute and directly into the basement coal room; without ever having to come inside and track coal dust everywhere!
However, the coal chute caused its own problems; that pesky coal dust again! The coal falling down the chute and onto the basement floor could pulverize itself and create a lot of coal dust. Since most coal rooms were NOT airtight, you could end up with a haze of coal dust in your basement. And if you’ve seen any TH-cam videos of grain dust, powdered sugar, or powdered creamer explosions… not a good thing at all. So how did people fix this? Rugs. Rag rugs, old canvas, the rug that was destroyed when Betsy spilled an entire glass of red wine on it, all were used to line coal rooms to reduce and contain the coal dust created; and reduce the chance of a coal dust explosion.
The rug in this video was probably used to line the floor of an active coal room (yes, people still have coal powered furnaces and use coal rooms to this day!) and absorbed the dust from years of coal deliveries. Back in the day, when a coal room rug needed to be disposed, it would just be thrown in the furnace as fuel. However with modern rugs (acrylics plastics, etc.) that’s not the safest option. So instead of burning it, Mountain Rug Cleaning got some business and we got a satisfying cleaning video.
So, yeah. That’s what a coal room is and why there are rugs in them. 😊

I thought that too; but I think the issue would be the difference in the resistance and non resistance between the rubber and the holes..... And it would also cause strain between all the rubber and all the holes..... I think especially with the pressure washer.
I've got a brain injury but remember looking down at a similar project and thinking well shit, that didn't work the way I wanted it too.
The other guy said he sometimes does use a device like that for small rugs and unusual shaped rugs; I wonder if its needed to hold the rug in place or something..... The hole/not hole would be different though and how would you move it to successfully get all the parts in the other parts space.... Maybe just rings and rings and some are filled and some are not so he just slides the whole thing one hole row over..... Idk. I'm subscribed so if I watch a video where he does use a thing like that I'll come back (if I remember) and tell you the episode where it's used.

There was a coal room in the hallway and when the delivery man came, we spread newspapers on the floor and he would come in the front door with a coal bag over his shoulder to dump in the coal room. Looking back on it now, I hate to think what his lungs must have been like spending his days carrying bags of coal. It always took a while to clean up the hallway after he left.

    You're not a rug cleaner, you're a wizard who make miracles .

WOW! You changed the order of operations in this episode. The outcome was superb! The colors revealed were bright, and enriched hues that were not at all apparent in the introductory rollout. The motif is somewhat abstract, and beguiling. I have an affinity for geometric symmetry with rugs, etc. Nevertheless, this was a wonderful way to begin the weekend. Thank you so much for posting! I hope you went to the pub after for a pint to unwind from this brutal laboring task. The owner will be overwhelmed by the presentation of this clean, and restored throw. Well done! Cheers!

Utterly incredible. When you rolled it out, I was like--"This one? How?" But I'm seeing more than ever how. The bristles of the rotating brush roll, not that they could do anything--it's the motor and the electrical supply. And the SHAMPOO!! What the heck is in that shampoo that causes such thick black whatever to respond to it? And, of course, the water helps. The soil just can't resist the science. It will NOT stay adhered to the fibers of the rug pile. Lol! Amazing process, amazing results.

That's a cool looking rug. Someone is going to want that. I know you will make it cleaner than a new rug.
