As a magic the gathering player, I DESPISE the secondary market as it takes a game meant to be played and enjoyed and essentially turns it into a lottery based system that ruins the game for the rest of us. This is why I am now starting to focus more on proxies.

its always been a lottery based system, in fact card games are the first ever "pay to win" system in a game that was also attached to RNG gatcha mechanics. You buy a pack, You have a CHANCE to get something good. The secondary market only causes issues for adults or people who play competitively; Since if you're just playing a game then you dont care about how powerful you are or how rare your stuff is as long as its fun to play; the only downside you have is that you cant evolve chameleon unless you get lucky. As someone whos competitive level in World of warcraft i understand but you cant pretend that we arent the only ones effected by things like this
People who just play the game will never understand why hardcore / competitive players get mad at things that cost more than the game itself. (Eg. 2nd hand cards costing $100s for your group and mount shops in MMO's for my group)

This is a topic of discussion I’ve been having with friends for the last several months. All the issues related to the scarcity of cards in stores due to scalpers is such a ridiculous thing to deal with for people, especially kids, that actually enjoy the hobby. Before the holiday season there was no trouble finding cards at my local stores. After that the shelves are always barren. Stores have had to change how they handle their shipments, keeping their stocks behind the customer service counter and limiting amounts each person can buy. The service desk staff are all tired of having lines of dozens of people every Friday morning hounding them for cards. I hope it doesn’t take too long to die down

I am happy I had a binder back in 1997. All my Pokemon cards have sat in sleeves for over 20 years untouched. Never had a first edition charizard, unless it's one of the many cards that was stolen when I was a child including from my own family.

According to an unofficial Pokemon Collector's Value Guide (second edition) from CheckerBee Publishing that didn't even have the Gen 2 Pokemon names, holographic Charizard was also really expensive then. $260 to be precise.

I got started in Pokemon with a card pack in 1999 and found the anime the next week. I stopped collecting around half way through Diamond and Pearl and jumped back in late 2019 well before all of the cough stuff went down. Now I'm really regretting that collecting break considering a lot of Black and White sets are stupidly expensive now.

Funny thing about the collectables or antiques market, accountancy wise the items have no value. The cost occured to make them and profit made on selling them has already occurred. Any value more than scrap is arbitrary based upon how much people want the thing.

Funny thing is that my pokemon card collection started when my friend in preschool gave me four cards. Torterra, Blazekin, Giratina, and. Lvl X Empoleon(Screw the dog that destroyed this card). After that, my dad gave me his collection from when he collected in the 90s. He even showed me his rare hollow Gyarados and Poliwrath cards from gen 1. Funny thing to me is that he even had all the promo cards from the 1st movie. This is what got me into collecting cards and all the EXs, Breaks, GXs, V, and VMax cards I own now.

The best way for modern cards to retain value for investment purposes is to keep them as sealed product meaning a whole box of pack still in the booster box and the box is still sealed in plastic.

Not to be that guy, but at 8:50, Generations isn't really a "Generations" set. It was a promotional set for the 20th Anniversary that was more for the "Generations" of mythicals.
If you look at the set list for the individual cards, they're all just XY or newer cards. For an actual nostalgia set, you'd look to Evolutions, that came out the same year as Generations, the difference is that because the boarders look like Gen 1-2 cards, it caters to that nostalgia button a bit harder. Plus you have straight or spiritual reprints of basically lots of popular Base-Jungle cards in that set. Minus the EX cards, which I always viewed as additional layers compared to the rest.
I know I'll probably get a ton of hate for pointing this out, since every time I've ever pointed this out people always say "but muh set name! It obviously shows off lots of cards!", to which I point out "Gen 1 pandering, massively, then you have the Radiant Collection which has like 3 out of the 6 generations involved". Like out of the entire 20ish years that the card game's been a thing, I don't think there's been a single set that has all current generations represented. Since the cards are a way to sell popular merch. So unless we want to shove Garchomp, Dragonite, Salamence, T-Tar, Greninja, name a Gen 5 Pokemon there's lots of not top 10 but certainly popular ones, Lycanroc, and any of the Gen 8 (Since we're still in Sword and Shield era as of the writing of this comment), all inside one set, we're probably never going to get an all encompassing set. Even if we did I'm almost guaranteed there's gonna be people that say something to the effect of, "Wow you certainly blew your entire load of good ideas on this set". Since most sets really only have around 20 playable cards. Maybe 50 if we're lucky. This is to keep you coming back every quarter outside of Japan, or every month inside Japan, so you're constantly searching for that new card that's gonna make your deck better.

I’m a 90’s baby here born 91’ I was putting my cards in a sleeve as soon as I hit the parking lot running out of the mall from KB toys!! I still remember the day I found my Holographic Blastoise! That was the day! I’ve kept good care of my cards and let’s be honest yall “Pokémon card buyers” of today will never know the feeling of getting those cards when they were first coming out and you were waking up to watch Pokémon on tv grabbing the gold plated cards at Burger King in the drive through and slipping your rare cards into plastic sleeves! And yes I still have my cards I doubt I’ll ever sale my blastoise though 🤔 maybe I’ll get him rated one day?

Boy am I glad I got into TCGs after developing the attitude that I should protect my possessions and the mindset that would lead me to build budget decks. Also, MTG is my jam as opposed to Pokemon, at least when it comes to TCGs. I wonder if MTG card prices vary to the same extent as that of Pokemon and YuGiOh since MTG cards aren't tied to video games or anime. The thought is that ties to a form of media would have a polarizing effect on demand for certain cards based on how popular and how heavily featured they are in said media. One would think that polarized demand would in turn polarize price. The closest MTG has to a link to media is the promotional materials, which do prominently feature some characters. But promotional materials have nowhere the reach of a video game or anime. Thus, one would think that promotional materials wouldn't have as strong a polarizing effect on demand and consequently price of individual cards.

Card Games with random chance packs have always been a lottery based system, in fact card games are the first ever "pay to win" system in a game that was also attached to RNG gatcha mechanics. You buy a pack, You have a CHANCE to get something good that will increase your power to a point of winning.
The secondary market only causes issues for adults or people who play competitively; Since if you're just playing a game then you dont care about how powerful you are or how rare your stuff is as long as its fun to play; the only downside you have is that you cant evolve chameleon unless you get lucky.
As someone whos competitive level in World of Warcraft I understand but you cant pretend that we aren't the only ones affected by things like this
People who just play the game will never understand why hardcore / competitive players get mad at things that cost more than the game itself. (Eg. 2nd hand cards costing $100s for your group and mount shops in MMO's for my group)
Also learn to concede we're killing the planet too by sitting here using talking boxes made of dead dinosaurs and metal rather than actually going out and doing something about it.
