Will, I am laying on my back working on the bottom of a bay boat (trailer is out of the way). Is it possible to successfully spray gel coat straight up from this position? If yes, what type of gun (gravity or suction) would be best? I have about 24" from the shop floor to the bottom of the boat. I have scoured the web for this information with no success. I have the shop tools for this: clean high volume air, spray guns, zero experience with gel coat, I am using TotalBoat gelcoat without wax and a wax additive. Shop is about 92 deg, Texas in late July.
Anything’s possible. Your going to make a mess for sure, you’ll be covered, the shop will be covered. You’ll spill more than you spray. A pressure pot would be the most ideal for this application.
I'm touching up an old (1978) Laser. It had a few scratches but nothing big. I started sanding prior to finding you channel. This is NOT a race boat and I am 75. I just want to sail and have fun while doing it. My question is....Can I apply the three coats of gelcoat over the existing surface? I have a list of Total Boat products.....this is going to take longer than I originally thought....lol Thanks, Bob
Hi bob! You can put gelcoat over the surface as many layers as you want. I highly recommend you watch my videos on restoring sunfish sailboats. There’s a lot of good info in those!
Applying gelcoat with flake in it is extremely hard. It’s not something I can really help you with on TH-cam. If your interested you could email me your contact info and I could walk you through it over the phone. I do charge for consulting fyi.
Will Gel coat adhere over Epoxy Primer? And does it work well for Polyester resin and Epoxy Resin panels alike? Great down home straight on about videos like the simplistic way you go about explaining things.
OK, just a quick question. I got a 2.5 mm hvlp gun to spray my gelcoat through. Just for reference I set the gun up with 32 psi, and made the adjustments I had seen for proper coverage layers. I was trying to get an idea of how many pots of mix i should prep to cover above and below the waterline. I was practicing with water, but it seems I can do the port side with one pot, swap out, and then one more pot for starboard. This is a guess for each layer. Have you got any idea how much variation I will get from water to gelcoat volume wise? Just a ballpark guess would be helpful. Thank you in advance for your time,
@@kevinmclaughlin9281 The viscosity of water and gelcoat are so different it isn't even worth figuring out that math. Couldn't even guess! So id recommend mixing enough to fill the cup, spray that quickly clean the spray gun, mix another batch and carry on until your done. Gelcoat will start to set, mixed at 2%, in the cup within 10 minutes, on the hull you have about 45 minutes. In my shop I just estimate and mix more if needed. Sometimes its all guesswork!!
Why use waxed gelcoat rather then using patch aid especially when spraying? And why TotalBoat? They charge like full retail. I can get 5 gallons almost for what they charge for a gallon. And it's CCP gelcoat I think, which Im not a fan of. I much prefer HK gelcoat with Polynt PatchAid. They also charge so much more for waxed too and adding wax at 2% on your own is cheaper but still wax additive is mostly for brishing gelcoat the patch aid makes it flow better and thins it out. Thinning gelcoat with solvent is a huge no-no in my shop (maybe MEK @ 5% MAX for a lamination coat) and trying to spray out the can is rough. Just my preference I suppose, good video though! do you guys not do a lot of Gelcoat at your shop? And one last "tip" is try ONR "Optimum No Rinse" for wetsamding it's amazing. Smells good, cheap, clean, and 1 cap per spray bottle of water is enough. Lubrication is awesome but the smell is the winner!
I'm in no way Bashing TotalBpat btw,! wetedge, surface prep and dewaxer, Spartan Bottom Paint and their 5:1 epoxy are all a staple in my shop. Just to clarify.
Total boat is the stuff I use. That’s the reason. I quite enjoy the stuff. It’s the most diy’er friendly, which is where most of my videos are tailored. I believe every person should try it once to get some knowledge. (Again what my videos are for) and simple green is my go to, I’ll never change that lol. But I’ll get some and see how it works. Thanks for commenting!!
Im going to try simple green sometime. And I get what your saying on the DIY stuff,I was just pointing out that the gelcoat from other places is made by the same company that makes TotalBoat gelcoat, gelcoat comes from only like 4 different sources and these places use their own label. Total boat just charges so much for thiers and was more trying to save you money. If you have never used patch aid, try it once you will never go back. DuraTech is the best, but, most expensive and is more then gelcoat actually. But sands like a dream, almost no orange peel when spraying, thins it nice, and the finish product looks so much better. There is cheaper options then duratech that work just as good though. Adds depth to the gelcoat. Good videos btw, what state are you in?
Trust me you would rather see the re-spray then do it. Gelcoat Flake is such a pain. Not only is gelcoat a bit touchy and so many factors that can cause issues, flake is even worse. I have sprayed a LOT of them and get nervous still.
Im spraying a gel coat tonight. First time. Your video assist has helped me immeasurably
Thank you! Please send me some photos and I’ll feature it in the next video!!
Cool. Thank you. I'm making a.boat and using your videos to help with the plug surface for the mold.
Thats great. what kind of hull are you making?

good tips. I'm redoing a rather large sailboat rudder
Good luck!

Hi my name is Jerry I. In fl hurricane ina area doing some gelcoat repair scratches dings ex. And small fiberglass work
hi jerry!
I just recently joined your channel and I like the way you teach how to use the products and the math behind it.
I really appreciate you watching!! And thank you for the kind words!!
Do you have to sand the gel coat after you add the 1st layer and then do you reapply it again to add multiple layers
Not if your using laminating gelcoat.
I have a bass boat with flake and I want to add new gel coat because the original gel coat is really bad what is the process I need to do..?

Gelcoat ( which is polyester )will not work with ANY epoxy products. Epoxy will stick to polyester products. Thanks for the nice comment!!
@@HoldFastMarine Thank You for the comment! I will be able to do most of what I need then. I appreciate the help!
Thank you for this video
Can you spray waxed gel kote over non wax gel coat?
You’d have to, to get the non wax gel to cure.
Great tips, it looks great!
Thank you! feel free to share it!
can you add wax to non wax gel coat ? if so how much? is there any worries with that?
You can!! Some gelcoat suppliers provide the wax. Others you have to buy separately
Do one with metalflake repair! I'm discovering that it's definitely tricky.
I have heard it is! Personally I only like doing ocean going boats. Let me know how yours comes out!!
What are you having issues with? I may be able to help, if it's not to late. This comment was a month ago.
@@hullhealersboatworksrestor4377 you have Facebook?
I just did gel coat for the first time today and it came really ruff thats why i came here😂
how to get rid of fresh gelcoat orange peel and bring it to the shine?
Please check out my other video sanding and buffing the hill of a sunfish sailboat.
I would like to see larger Gelcoat projects (like the hull of a cruiser). Thanks,Kevin
Send one down to me and I’d be happy to film it 😉
@@HoldFastMarine be careful what you wish for. Where is down here? Also I will forward some pics of the project boat I am currently chest deep in.
Not sure if that worked

I’d love to show you that, I don’t have a bass boat to paint unfortunately.

Very true. That’s why gelcoat should only be a solid color lol. Make sure you subscribe to the channel!
