    • @Shoofyou10
      @Shoofyou10 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

I often feel like when it comes to racial humor or gay humor or really any kind of humor about a specific group that a lot of times the people that the jokes are about are able to laugh about it and think it’s funny. Where people who aren’t a part of that group tend to want to feel offended on their behalf. And it’s mostly good intentioned to want to feel that way in behalf of that group. It’s a weird dichotomy where everyone means well but like the people that are the brunt of the joke can laugh at themselves. I mean, Wanda Sykes is in that scene and if she isn’t offended by it then I don’t think people should be

@@Shoofyou10 "Where people who aren’t a part of that group tend to want to feel offended on their behalf." I just want to clarify that I didn't feel offended. Obviously the black people who were involved in that scene were okay with it and that's cool with me. But that scene wasn't my cup of tea because when it comes to humour about a group of people, I will always prefer that it is coming FROM someone that belongs to said group, because (and to quote you) "The people that the jokes are about are able to laugh about it and think it's funny." and that's why I'm able to enjoy it in those instances.

@@kaiielle I understand where both you and @Shoofyou10 are coming from, but I have to disagree with the notion that black people were "the brunt of the joke" in this scene. While racist terminology was used, black people were definitely not the target of the joke: the target was Randal and his ignorance.
Now, if we learned that Randal knew what that term meant and used it anyway, then the scene doesn't work: the humor is gone and it's just Randal being a racist. Instead, they went out of their way to establish that Randal genuinely didn't know the term had any racial connotations. From there, they used Randal's ignorance to make fun of the way some people hand wave away the racists things the older generations say until it got so blatantly racist that even Randal couldn't deny it anymore. It also mocked how some people get so stubborn about changing the words they use, even once they learn these words are, at best, deeply problematic.
I fully understand if the humor was based on mocking people of a different race or creed. However, in this case, the humor was used to mock the ignorant white dude, all while keeping it relatively light by establishing his behavior is based on ignorance instead of malice.
With that all said: "baby, you can't taste racism!" is still one of my favorite lines from the movie.

As a white guy who saw this back when I used to work at a movie theater, That is what I saw. This movie was packed to the brim every single night with roaring laughter, and though we had some walkouts (probably mostly during the donkey show) I felt it was one of the funniest and most daring scenes i’d ever seen. Not because I find racism to be funny. (Unless we’re talking about something Blazing Saddles, where the point is to put a magnifying glass up to racism and show how stupid and ignorant it is) But in the context that the scene was done, it works. I also don’t feel like Wanda Sykes, a outwardly gay, Black-American woman and Earthquake would have signed on to be a part of the movie, if they didn’t find it to be funny, themselves.

Hello there. I had the pleasure of seeing a special midnight screening of this film at my local independent cinema here in San Jose, CA. What I loved about this film was that it represented my generation. CLERKS was my twenties. With this film, it was as my thirties, like Dante and Randall. It dealt with what my generation was dealt with: still working at low grade jobs, dealing with getting older, wondering what we’re doing with our lives, what the future will bring us, the idea of love and marriage in our thirties, etc.
The whole film resonated with me and the audience, because it was a mirror of us-dealing with topical and social issues. And yes, I am Generation X, we loved this film, including the “Interspecies erotica” scene.

Fun facts about this movie, Dante's wife Emma is Kevin Smith's wife Jennifer in real life, the kid that waves at Dante while he was driving is Kevin's daughter Harley Quinn and the lady at the end who is taking out all the milk is Kevin's mom Grace, who also did that same thing in clerks. Regarding the fandom bashing, while this was just getting rolling with the trolling back then with 30-somethings like Randall, consider that in the 18 years since kids have now grown up in the internet environment as something informing behavior rather than the unusually extreme comments and rudeness. So instead of liberating freedom to blast whatever you feel of past generations, its younger people not fearing any kind of reprisal to their obnoxiousness. I would be very interested in seeing internet trolls being as brash in person as Randall is here. Doubt it.

So I've been waiting for this reaction from you, because of Randall's rants now that, said I personally am In a wheelchair.
So you would think I'd be offended as you should, BUT because it's coming from the most arrogant character I think it's really really funny.
Even the star wars VS lord of the rings rant, again I love both equally found to be one of the funniest moments.
And the racist names rant because it's a OMG moment and shocking even that's funny when it shouldn't be.
Probably only thing I genuinely miss is the B&W throughout, I wish Kevin Smith made it a black and white trilogy.
    Just my take.
Wait til you see clerks 3 different tone.
Keep up your great work 🙂👍❤

It's kind of amusing that Rosario Dawson is your favorite part of this movie and the donkey show is what you hated most. Reason being: Kevin Smith and Rosario have both talked about how she decided to take the role after Kevin offered it to her. She was undecided while reading the script, but reading the donkey show part was what convinced her: she was so entertained by it and curious as to how Kevin would pull the scene off, that she signed on to the role. That means your favorite part of the movie only signed on because of the existence of your most hated part of the movie!
Personally, I rank this movie as one of the best of the View Askewniverse: I still think the Pillow Pants scene is absolutely hilarious (not just the dialogue, but Randall's reaction and the ominous background music). That said: I totally get it if a lot of this movie's humor didn't work for you.
Looking forward to your next Kevin Smith movie reaction!

I have always liked this one better than the first Clerks. It's totally subjective, but this one feels like a better movie overall, like with better acting and a more narrative story. This sequel also affected me more, because a) it's more emotional than the first one, b) it has a happy ending, and c) Rosario Dawson is AMAZING in this film!

Randall was a case of emotional arrested development and he used his "humor" to keep people at a distance because he was insecure and afraid of being hurt and abandoned. It's a feedback loop of Randall treating people like crap to keep from getting hurt and getting hurt by people walking away from his behavior.
The final choice to re-open the Kwik-Stop was a dysfunctional choice because it keeps Randall from emotionally growing. He basically got what he wanted: Dante stayed and he gets to run the Kwik-Stop. The best thing for Randal would've been for Dante to move so that Randall is shaken out of comfort zone and repeating pattern of dysfunction.

This is my favorite Kevin Smith film. It received a multiple minute standing ovation at Caanes. Randal says abhorrent things but its clear he is portayed as rhe dumb guy ergo this is how dumb people speak. Also though it is also obvious he is obnoxious but does so without hate, he doesn't look down on others for things they didn't choose, only people who make bad choices like Tbe Rings trilogy being in any way comparable to the Skywalker trilogy. I think you missed the mark.

This is such a conflicting movie for me, because on one hand there's so much of it that is rather hard to watch. But then out of nowhere it will have these incredibly strong emotional character beats. Like when Randal isn't saying unhinged stuff, Jeff Anderson is out there giving such a powerful performance. The way he shows how hard it is for Randal to be vulnerable and actually express his emotions in a healthy way? I dunno. It's certainly an inconsistent movie! That much I can say for certain.

And if they didn't... how could you miss hearing the screams of your partner before your 21st birthday when engaging in such activities?! Or did you simply take delight in their pain and suffering?! (I hope you know I'm being facetious as Hell, right now, hoping to make you laugh)
34:40 - I said it during Clerks, and I'll say it again: Randal Graves is my spirit animal. I worked retail jobs long enough to know that, at some point, I became just like him... and long before year 2000.

@@kaiielle I honestly hope that you DON'T cry like I did during that movie. I cried hard (and I don't cry during movies except in extreme circumstances) during that movie, but it was because of a very personal connection to the plot (several, actually).

We all have our own experiences, and there is so much hate in this world already, that I will not add to it.
I just want you to have the tissues handy "in case" you need them, but I have no expectations for you to HAVE to use them. I do not spread hate, nor do I send bad feelings to others who don't feel the same way I do (I have had some REALLY traumatic life experiences, and honestly, hope that others do NOT have the same ones, and I empathize with those who do, but also am happy for those who don't).
