A short story: I was travelling with work from Ireland to St Louis in October. I did a quick search online for a 100 miler nearby and Ozark 100 Endurance Run appeared. I entered. After a few weeks the entry list was put up and there was Eric Senseman. I was shocked and said to myself "sur its probably another Eric Senseman and not the famous one". I thought this race would be very low key but this started to peek my interest and I searched the internet for more information. I realised the race had a history of attracting great runners who completed and won this race - Kyle Curtin (course record holder), Bronco Billy etc. I assumed Eric was after the record. On the morning of the race we all piled off the school bus at 5:30 am in the middle of the autumnal woods and there was the man himself. I was giddy but did'nt want to dsturb him. The race started in the dark and Eric and another guy (who won) gazelled off the front. I was in the second pack and only saw him again due to the out and back. I never expected to see him again as by the time I would finish he probably would be in bed. However, many hours later there was Eric and his pacer (I thought it was Zack Miller: in the dusk) on the trail and I had to ask them to move to the side so I could pass. It was cold and wet and I got the DNF vibe off them. It was a good distance to the next aid station and it was getting dark again. I wished them well. In the end I finished and won the masters race:) Back home in Ireland I heard of the retirement and I felt sorry for him that his last 100 miler did'nt go as planned. I wish him well. And you are famous Eric!!!!
This was a great exchange. Watching this I though man how freeing it must be to really admit how you feel on an open forum. From both you guys. Versus having to dance around all that for fear of what sponsors might think, or the public. It was authentic. Thanks!!
I appreciate listening to you guys hammering out the details of your running careers during this interview. I'm sure Eric will do well with whatever he chooses to pursue based on the example he displayed during his professional running career.
Great discussion between a couple of solid human beings. Had the pleasure of chatting with Eric at his Cocadona film screening and cheering him through my aid station last April at our local trail race near St Louis. Quite the genuine and thoughtful dude. Looking forward to seeing him at another event in the future, even if it’s just to come out and have fun in the woods with our trail community.
Wow could I relate to this. I used to play professionally in an orchestra, (the keep your day job type) but at a point it wasn't fun anymore. I didn't want to practice, didn't want to go to rehearsal, and wanted my evenings, weekends, and holidays back. Much respect to Eric for deciding to start the next phase of his career and run on his terms!
Really great episode and I appreciated the candor and humility from both of you. It's sad to think that one day we will have (or have had) the best run of our lives and then we start working in the other direction. It seems weird to think that one day all the training in the world just isn't going to be enough LOL. But hey....I guess getting to that point in life is a privilege some don't get to experience so we should be happy we made it this far and can continue the journey in whatever capacity we choose. Well done on a fantastic career and keep on keeping on:)
I think as a pro it gives credibility as influencer even though pros doesn’t like that term. The opposite helps Seth since he is big influencer but wins big races sometime. I suggest don’t retire since it will keep your ear on the beat with new pros. Just do one major race per year. Eric is a great guy. His enthusiasm in SNB program is awesome.
I understand Eric not wanting to be known for anything but his raw talent but that’s just unrealistic imo. Personhood is what matters. I was always captivated by him because of his energy not because of his wins(I honestly don’t know his wins and losses) Talent is interesting but far less so than what makes someone tick and how they hold themselves in challenging situations.
What do you guys think about Bronco Billy still smashing it out in his 50s being competitive. Would be a great chat I think - how has he been able to stay motivated so long
