We dressed a little baggier but we knew we was different when I was in middle school and high school, our steelo was alwaysdifferent. Now days, we've lost our youth to act and dress like another race, and call each other a derogatory name for another race. It's a dying breed, and it's sad to see. Mexican is the first modern American identity. Native to the Americas and found nowhere else in the entire world. In the U.S., we're "a class apart". "Americans" by birth but if you need to know of what variety, Chicano is the only genuine fit.
My DNA revealed 55%-60% European, 30%-35% Indigenous, 5% African, i.e., classic Mexicano. I had no interest in investigating my origins beyond that. Any more than a British, Spanish, or Italian would feel compelled to sort out their varied origins. Mexicano-Chicano is good enough for me.

I don't think that you've spent a lot of time in Mexico(?). Otherwise, regardless of complexion or specific DNA, I've never met anybody in Mexico who didn't claim the identity ad privilege of "Mexicano". Including the indigenous who can still claim tribal identity which only reinforces their Mexican identity. No less than "Tapatio" or other regional identities united under the national identity of Mexicano.

It’s actually irrelevant to the point that 85% of Mexicans are mestizo. I am a Chicano and that’s all that matters to me. There are people that like to say they hate the term. I give two 🦆 about what they like. I don’t tell them what to call themselves or what they want to identify with. If a native from Mexico born here wants to call themselves a Chicano. That’s justified. I’m good with that. But if a Japanese wants to be Chicano I’m good with that too.

In response to inquiries about our heritage my aunt responded, "We have no memory of any family from outside of Mexico. We've always lived in Mexico. We're Mexican". In the 90s, when my Mexican counterparts were working with the Zapatista movement, I asked whether they wanted to secede from Mexico. They responded no and that what they were demanding was equality with all Mexicans. Race and ethnicity is an American issue and obsession. Otherwise, there has never been the equivalent of a KKK in Mexico, the indigenous populations were not relocated into reservations, and class not race has been the historic source of conflict and division in Mexico. In the U.S., we're "a class apart". American by birth, Chicano by choice.

If you're born and raised in the U.S., you are not "real Mexican" to real Mexican, which is okay. Chicano is our response.
