memorable music, he was in nigeria for a concert and he arrived 2 days later than agreed and nigeria had a military leader then in person of general yakubu gowon. as soon as jimmy arrived the airport in lagos, he was arrested and detained at the police station. my father was among the police officers that escorted him to detention upon his arrest. his offense was that he signed a concert deal to play in nigeria and he went to u.k to play on the appointed date instead and then nigeria had a no nonsense govt. my dad told me the full story and my dad said he told jimmy not to worry that he was a big fan... but jimmy looked at him with a scorn that my dad never forgot in a hurry, i laughed at the story though. he was later freed and he played and toured nigeria as agreed. lol!!
I was born in 1991. In 2001, my father often played Jimmy Cliff's songs which included this track. I think this Jimmy's Nigeria incident must have happened in the 1970s. I am wowed your father was among the those who had to make Cliff respect Nigeria. Great story, I enjoyed it. From Enugu, Nigeria 🇳🇬.
Jimmy, Nigerians love you up till today. Your music is full of good message for those who understand. How I wish you can visit Nigeria again. Remain blessed.
Jimmy, you are loved in Nigeria and overwhelmingly in much of Africa 🌍 Please don't be disillusioned by what happened to you in Nigeria. Africa is your motherland, and we love you, Jimmy 😍
What a voice! Music was conveying message in that era . I can't hold tears from running down my face when I here a sorrow in the song. Thanks Jimmy for lifting up people's spirit during the difficult times this planet has experienced. Songs like, sitting in limbo, no woman no cry, journey, I can see clearly now, dear mother and hypocrite. Thanks God for He sent the messenger in your form.
In those days my uncle Mike, brought Jimmy to Nigeria for what was a nice tour untill a rival business man filled a breach of contract suit against Jimmy for defaulting on an ealier contract signed in london to perform in Nigeria, Jimmy split town soon as he made bail, causing my uncle lose lots of money. Nigerians adore Jimmy all the same.
Suffering in the Land , song #51 sounds to me like JC's prophecy about Nigeria that is being fulfilled at this time or was it his curse on Nigeria for the humiliating treatment meted out to him!
Really? Is that what actually happened? I was born in 1975, into a Jimmy Cliff - Loving home, my parents played Jimmy, all day back to back. I have always been eager to know the story behind this song. Thanks for sharing. Blessings and greetings from Bamenda, Cameroon. Is your uncle available? I would love to interview him.
@@fombillioncivilization2784Please share if you do. I have always been interested in getting to the root of this story. It would also be balanced to interview the rival businessman and others involved in the matter.
It was a short lived " problem" by the then Military Govt He went ahead to llater have a successful tour He was Very Very Popular in Nigeria , probably next only to Jamaica
Jimmy Cliff is one of the Oldest Rastafarians and he is still there in Jamaica. I wish I could visit Jimmy Cliff and what is the possibility to invite him to come to Our Country for big Entertainment
He quit the rastafarian movement in the early 80s, and then went on to convert to Islam. He had a brief spell in the Islamic faith. Now he says he does not identify with any religion.
@@charlesetumnu505 He came five hours late to a famous wedding that paid a huge check. The groom's father got upset and put him in jail for disappointing his rich guests. Later, it was quickly resolved because the lateness was caused by flight, airport clearance, and traffic delays.
The untold truth is that Cliff breached a contract. The Federal Republic of Nigeria is governed by law, not by mem. Breach of contract is an offence in Nigeria punishable by law. In Jimmy Cliff's case, the law took its course, pure and simple. Cliff should be man enough to tell the truth rather than embarking on emotional character assassination.
Common, breach of contract an offence in the most corrupt country in Africa? May be then and not in my days where some are above the law, this was a case of a visitor who loved us even more than we love ourselves and should at least been given bail or bail made easier for but no, if it were now we would not have allowed this to happen, the country has always present issues of international disgrace ,illegality has been the order of the day, it's a shame Jimmy Cliff can't be in Nigeria but can go to Ghana, Cote d'ivoire, South Africa etc.!
Mr Truth why not disclose the contract title and details to prove yourself instead of talking of " a contract". I hate liars who refer to hearsay as TRUTH.
Si tu as fait la prison au Nigeria tu n'avait pas respecté les règles pour cela que tu avait été expluser la date que tu voulais chanter tu n'avait pas respecté la date
"Make me some music", one of my best tracks when in high school in early seventies. I still love it❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I was in Primary 6 in 1974, and I knew about his arrest on the radio. I was deeply saddened. He remains one of my favourite reggae musicians.

I love Jimmy Cliff but it is always great to get the full picture. Did Jimmy actually breach the previous contract he was sued for?

Same then and uptill now. They couldn't shame you then and will never be able to.
Os primeiros reggaes que comecei ouvir foi de Jimmy cliff

He was Very Very Popular in Nigeria , probably next only to Jamaica

Jimmy on behalf of my country I apologize to you for the inconveniences and embarrassments you suffered.
Jimmy Cliff is one of the Oldest Rastafarians and he is still there in Jamaica. I wish I could visit Jimmy Cliff and what is the possibility to invite him to come to Our Country for big Entertainment
I don't think he's a Rastafarian
Jimmy Cliff is not rasta, he's muslin and his muslin name is El Hadj Naïm Bachir.
Jimmy Cliff never claimed the Rastafarian faith, he did dabble In Islam briefly, but was never a Rasta man!
He quit the rastafarian movement in the early 80s, and then went on to convert to Islam. He had a brief spell in the Islamic faith. Now he says he does not identify with any religion.
On behalf of Nigeria,I apologize to you brother. Sir, forgive them for they don't know what political trap they fell in .
Bom de se ouvi

Bro forgive us, we acted ignorantly. You are loved and cherished always.
It is that very ignorance that will destroy nigeria.
So sad
Memorable, but u told lies in ur story. You should have been apologetic for dishonoring and breaching a contract.
His arrest had nothing to do with the Nigerian authorities then but was as a result of disagreement with those who packaged his trip to Nigeria.
Then who put Jimmy in jail?
@@charlesetumnu505 He came five hours late to a famous wedding that paid a huge check. The groom's father got upset and put him in jail for disappointing his rich guests. Later, it was quickly resolved because the lateness was caused by flight, airport clearance, and traffic delays.
So what is the Nigeria police?
❤❤❤❤❤😂
I apologize om behalf of Africa
Interesting, Nigerian govt don't joke with their prisoners
how successful could the Nigerian tour have been when they threw the poor man in Jail and he had one hell getting bail?
😄
