American Ambulances VS German Ambulances

  • I'm sure I hit some people's soft spot with such a video - isn't it always like "the stuff here is always better, by any given aspect, than what you have over there"?!
    In this video I compare ambulances in the United States of America and the Federal Republic of Germany.
    Before anyone tries to attact me as if I'd create a biased video: I tried to make both segments equally long, however there are more video scenes for Germany, in contrast to that longer ones for the US. I tried to cover an as wide range of ambualnces as possible, but please acceppt that I can only use the videos I made myself, so the range of units I have from the US isn't quite as wide-spread.
    For the American part I chose ambulances from various states, on the chassis of vans and pickup trucks, with and without box bodies, old and new units with old halogen to new LED emergency light setups. There are single ambulances as well as ambulance convoys and a nice range of colors as well. Unfortunately I don't know which ones are BLS or ALS units, or which ones might even be used as MICU (Mobile Intensive Care Unit).
    Representing Germany I basicly did the same thing, with videos from all over the country: while approximately 99% of all German ALS Emergency Ambulances are based on the Sprinter, I tried to cover the other brands as well. Just like for the US part, I have again rather small to full-size ambulances with a box body, BLS Transport Ambulances to ALS Emergency Ambulances, also some special types like the BLS Disaster Management Ambulances, or a Large Capacity Ambulance Bus. I also covered rather old as well as brandnew units, with old and new lights setups, some with rather few or more or less porr lights, other with a wide range of excellent lights, with several grill / mirror lights, intersection lights and corner strobes etc ... As for the color scheme I chose both rather simple ones with plain red / white colors to ones with highlighted colors and reflective shapes / stripes.
    To be fair: there are always pros and cons for each unit, and there are som factors or aspects where one country is ahead of the other one:
    What's your opinion, or if available even experience with the one or the other side? Let me know in the comment section.

      I believe the laws are different. I'm not 100% sure, but in at least some states in the US it's not a criminal offence to fail to yield to an emergency vehicle, and the liability often lies with the emergency vehicle if an accident happens.
      I'm from the Netherlands and I think it'll be pretty much the same in Germany: here it's a criminal offence if you don't yield and if an emergency vehicle gets in an accident they are not liable if they had both their lights and sirens on.

US Sirenen dagegen kann man gut hören.

An, Aus, An, Aus.

      As I stated: you don't it ... just because it is filmed in NYC doesn't mean that it is from NYC. If an ambulance from LA would be filmed in NYC it would still be from LA. You continue with that nonsense that they are all from NYC although they are from other cities, other states. • @EnjoyFirefighting

      well, ambulances from Chicago obviously are, and Command Posts from the USACE from the west coast where on scene in NYC as well, and there were also German emergency vehicles as mutual aid support in New Orleans, so there's no need to call me all those things just because you don't know it! And no, even if you don't believe it, not everyone in the clip is from NYC ... as I stated numerous times before, some of them are from other states; Superior doesn't operate ambulances in NYC, they sent them as mutual aid support; I guess you can even see the sheets of paper reading ETRAC FEMA on some of those out of state ambulances because they were there as mutual aid, supporting local departments. That they'd be from NYC is simply a wrong statement, that's all! Quoting stuff doesn't make your wrong statements more correct :D

      >>Sorry for the reply in english my German skills are a bad joke
      Yes they do, and, in some states, you'll see ambulances followed by police cars to give tickets to drivers that don't yield.
      **All** of these clips from the US were taken from New York, which is an extreme misrepresentation of a country that literally spans a continent. (Think saying Berlin is representative of the entirety of germany or that Lisbon is somehow representative of the Netherlands- there are nominal cultural differences from city to city, state to state, and region to region- even in driving styles).
      Americans are generally worse at pulling over for emergency vehicles **and** generally worse at driving,
      but using a sample size of one city among hundreds, one state among 50, is a poor representation of traffic and driving practices across the country.
      Alot of the footage in this video simply would not fly in other cities in the US.
      The quality of driver's education (if any) and testing from state to state varies massively and is more akin to comparing driving from country to country in Europe.
      New York drivers are notorious for being _assholes_ and New York itself is notorious for having overly crowded streets without /room/
      Throughout most of the country, there are emergency lanes on roads/highways/interstates for emergency vehicles but there's just no space in New York (see: assholes).
      The average american driver is going to be worse as long as states have to pander to the lowest common denominator of driver. Because driving is a **necessity** for so many Americans, states have to make it so that a plurality of people can get a license. That train of thought just doesn't really exist anywhere outside North America (Canada is just as bad xoxo).
      It's really a small symptom of alot more complex issues that are only just now starting to actually be notices and dealt with. My state reintroduced mandatory driving instruction in 2010. 20 hours of classes + 45 hours of road instruction. Still not as much as some Euro countries but better than nothing (which is what we had before- and some states still have). We STILL don't have mandatory vehicle safety and emissions testing in my state (they were repealed in the 90s after the state government almost went bankrupt) but there are growing efforts to bring them back, especially now as both of our neighboring states have introduced them.
      Idk it's a lot but not because of one singular "oh everyone's stupid" or "oh they just don't know"
      Everyone knows what they SHOULD do. People learn move over for emergency vehicles as children. They just /don't/ either because they are selfish pricks or because the road they are on simply **doesn't allow** for them to move over.

    • @EnjoyFirefighting
      @EnjoyFirefighting  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      well, there are a few problems you have to take into account:
      It's just a video on an entertainment platform, not a documentary, not for TV, not for some fire and rescue magazines etc., so the range of information has to be limited, but where exactly is the limit? There are SO many different aspects, like
      - power to weight ratio,
      - interior space
      - carbinet space
      - mileage and fuel costs
      - passenger safety features
      - stopping distance
      - turning radius and body roll
      - moose test results
      - range of the field of view from the driver's seat
      - purchase costs, both in total numbers as well as in ratio to the
      number of inhabitants in the specific place
      - maintenance and repair costs
      - equipment loaded
      ... to be continued,
      Another thing I have answered just few hours ago during my own shift at our station: It's hard to get interior sights or even more when the only time being in the USA was during a business trip, and quite frankly: they had enough to worry about during that time

Perhaps people wouldn't dislike the video as much if it were called something more like, "American and German Ambulances responding". The current title leads one to believe that there is going to be some sort of analysis in the video itself. Besides that, there's nothing wrong with the video.

      Generalize much? That was NYC and the traffic is so congested that they can't simply stop because it would box in the Ambulance. They have to keep moving then they can get around them at an intersection. In towns and cities where the traffic isn't as congested people pull over to the side of the road. We also pull over and yield for funerals.

    I have heard the European style siren on American ambulances before (Charlotte NC) I work right next to a major trauma center and it seems as though they will occasionally use the two tone siren at low speeds in heavy traffic, at high speeds they will use the more traditional American style siren. I personally think it's a good idea, the stark contrast in sound makes it much easier for people to pinpoint where the siren is coming from.

    They should add pushbars to push the civillian cars that don't go to the side of the road in an emergency its annoying. Like imagine if someone had their legs blown off and they were bleeding heavily and had minutes before they would die and there is like a Prius driving 15 KPH in front of an ambulance not wanting to pull over if I was the one bleeding out I would be unconcious, but if I seen the car in front of the ambulance I would be really mad that I'm about to die from a prius, and no legs.

In europe the ambulance is going 80 in a 50 zone, through red light into a one way street.. nobody gets hurt.. In US the ambulance is going 45 in a 50 zone, and has to drive around the block to get in there the right way .. I guess it is safer this way, but just doesn't have that feeling of urgency to it

    "Superior Ambulance"? "Prompt Ambulance" "Beth Israel" Who the fuck had the idea to name an ambulance like that? Do they do polytraumata or are they not profitable enough?

    • @EnjoyFirefighting
      @EnjoyFirefighting  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      well, it took just a couple of minutes to find out some information:
      - Superior: was named after the service level its founders intended to provide all patients
      - Prompt: In October of 1998 the Miller family purchased a small ambulance service in East Chicago, and soon adopted the name PROMPT Medical Transportation, Inc., now doing business as PROMPT Ambulance Service
      - (Mount Sinai) Beth Israel Hospital: Beth Israel is Hebrew for "House of Israel." Beth Israel was incorporated in 1890 by a group of 40 Orthodox Jews on the Lower East Side each of whom paid 25 cents to set up a hospital serving New York's Jewish immigrants, particularly newcomers

      Thank you, interesting, but that was not what I meant. In Germany, the Ambulance is called "Rettungsdienst" - "Rescue service". It doesn't matter who provides the service (Red Cross, FD, privat provider), the service is always called Rescue service. To make the name "better" through a marketing name just seems absurd to me.

    • @EnjoyFirefighting
      @EnjoyFirefighting  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      well, they have either "Ambulance" or "emergency service" on their ambulances, while in Germany you might have the term Rettungsdienst", "Rettungswagen" etc on it ... which is exactly the same. Superior etc are the company names, just like names of the EMS providers on German EMS vehicles as well

    • @EnjoyFirefighting

      I don't care about the name an EMS provider has. I currently work for a provider where they have their last name as company name, while others have some kind of abbreviations for some extremly long company names, like RKSH, RKT, KBH Medical Service and so on
      Is it different, might is sound strange, yes, but in the end it's simply a company. There's also an EMS provider called "American Ambulance" in the USA, and I'm pretty sure: if we search for it, we find some even stranger, unusual EMS provider names

      No, they just have different styles
      American streets are larger therefore they have larger ambulances since they can accommodate for it, which allows for more room to treat the patient in the way to the hospital.
      European ambulances are smaller but therefore have more maneuvering room, however the lack of space inside them makes it harder for paramedics to move around with ease.

    • @EnjoyFirefighting
      @EnjoyFirefighting  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Kevin that's not quite correct. Looking at US Ambulances, many are for sure larger than European ones, but there are also many smaller ones as well. Just takea look at the Sprinter ambulances:in the USA you hardly find them with a box compartment at the rear but theplain normal Sprinter body, while many ambulances here have the large box on it.

    • @davidfreeman3083
      @davidfreeman3083 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@EnjoyFirefighting True. Although ambulances, just like law enforcement and fire trucks here, seem to prefer local brands. That being said, outside of large city centers, I don't see any Mercedes ambulances, just like Japanese brand police cars almost only exist as patrol/traffic control vehicles in small regions within large city centers.

    • @EnjoyFirefighting
      @EnjoyFirefighting  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@davidfreeman3083 not necessarily ... thus e.g. in Norway and Sweden you hardly find ambulances based on a Volvo, but primarily ones based on a German chassis.
      I recorded several Sprinter ambulances from an EMS provider which serves an area somewhere outside of Chicago. Also the EMS provider "American Ambulance" sets onto the Sprinter instead of an american ambulance. Of course it's not as common as local manufacturers, however e.g. not every Dodge is a Dodge ... some European vans which were pretty much unsuccessful over here became surprisingly popular at American EMS providers just because it was sold as Dodge in the USA

    The box on a flatbed construction of most US ambulances makes them deathtraps in accidents.

    • @EricLing64
      @EricLing64 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The concept is similar to school buses being bright yellow and not having seatbelts, the sirens and lights ensure that unless someone is completely braindead on the road, no one should hit an ambulance to create an accident.
      I mean it's not like the person being transported usually can take an accident in even something that isn't a deathtrap.

    • @EnjoyFirefighting

      tatsächlich, als EMS Supervisor treten die ab und zu, jedoch in bislang extremst seltenen Fällen auf, aber ja ich habe mich soeben auch mal belesen, dass es wohl ein Trend ist, Ärzte präklinisch im Falle von schwersten Unfällen eingesetzt werden. Fahren dann jedoch in einem seperaten Einsatzfahrzeug an

    • @r0tb3rt
      @r0tb3rt 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sowohl Ja als auch nein, Ärzte fahren "teilweise" mit den EMT´s mit, ist aber nicht der Regelfall und wie ich oben schon geschrieben habe, eher selten.
