My mother was 10 when they moved out of st Thomas, she said it was hot and miserable and my grand parents told us that the water was polluted because it was an irrigation canal that ran thru corrals and they would dip the water out and put it in the cistern to separate out the water from the dirt and “organic” material - many of the women and children would go camp in the mountains east of st Thomas at the Whitney or Aravada ranch - and when the government told them to move they got A LOT of money, moms family bought a brand new car, a 40 acre farm, a house with electricity, running water, and one of the first indoor bathrooms in the small town they moved to - I’m sure some people didn’t want to move but many were thrilled to take the money they got and run
Thank you so much for sharing this great story. So nice to hear the real history from the people that were involved. Love this. Thank you for watching and we will see you in the next one.
Today the Republican Party would call that government buyout "Commie," and your family "Welfare Queens." I am so happy your folks were treated fairly. My grandpa got bought out of 2 acres in dead center of San Francisco for pennies, in the 1960's. Special Friends of City Hall profited. Joys of Capitalism!
Oh no! I thought in looking at the few pictues I saw it looked very nice and lined with trees, Do you have any stories to share from your aunt, thank you for watching and thank you for the comment.
Looking at the size of the trees they cut down, makes me think that they dozed all the tall buildings. Possibly even the houses. Wouldn't want a boat running into them.😊
Hello, maybe so. I wish I could find more pictures. I know there were many houses made of wood. I am sure they either washed away and broke up or they tore them down. This town feels a little different than the other ghost towns. Thank you so much for watching and we will see you in the next one.
Hello, thank you so much for the super thanks. So happy to see your comment. Glad you liked the video. We will see you in the next one. Happy Hollidays!
GRE place to see. One has to imagine what it looked like back in the day for it to sink in. This was a fairly large town. Thank you for watching and we will see you in the next one.
It's sad to see what happened to St. Thomas, but take a look at Detroit and many other cities in this country, they're drowning in joblessness and look as bad as St. Thomas.
I'm an older retired railroaded and a veteran, and it saddens me to see how corrupt our government and what they are doing to our once great country. God help us all!
