Probably the most straight forward demonstration I’ve found, I’ve been helping a friend with his manual entries at least twice a week and he just doesn’t get it. I’ve now showed him this so he can call upon it whenever he’s stuck.

Cheers mate wouldn't mind seeing one on removing the card at the end of your shift. I've just drove one of the units for the first time today and I had to get help removing it as it seems to work a little different to the Siemens in our vans
Thankyou for making this vid it helped greatly. There doesn’t seem to be much good teaching material on this. I hate that driving without card message it scares me because I don’t know if it’s saving that to my card. I think it’s when the truck has been moved by the warehouse staff
Don’t worry about that message. My truck always displays it when I start as the night shift move the vehicle. Your card will only save your manual entries and info recorded when your card is in the machine. Remember, your card is there to record what you (the driver) has done, not what the vehicle has done !
I did the same as you craig the first 2 shifts useing tachos lol as I didn't know how to do a manual entry as it wasn't shown how in any lesson i was told put the card in an follow instructions 🤔 so for the first 2 shifts that i did it was showing 00.00 then my start time at 6am giving me 6 hours rest 😦when in fact I finished the previous shift at at 6pm making 12 hours rest but I have just keep the 2 print outs and explained the reasons on the back now I know we're I went wrong 😆 and have my proof it was a genuine mistake 🤓
Cheers for that my friend, I am picking up infringements left right and centre and it's also affecting pay due to the high amounts of rest I'm inputting.
Don' fall into the trap of putting it on 'rest' every time you stop, you'll get infringements for improper use of mode switch. Keep it simple, the only time you should be pressing the buttons is when you start/finish your shift and when you park up to have a proper break or select POA. Just be careful as some tachograph machines default is break, so every time you stop the tachograph goes on break.
They also time out. The first manual entry I done I got distracted as I started, when I went back it had gone onto the regular screen and said I need to take a break immediately. It thought I'd been doing other work all night.
Brilliant video, I think I am still doing something wrong, when I did my manual entry today it carried forward the driving I had done on my last working day, What do you think I am doing wrong? any advice gratefully received.
Peter Coffield The only thing I can think of is you did a manual entry of the rest period less than 9 hours or less than 11 hours (if you've already had 3 reduced rest periods). Your tacho will then record driving time as you've described as a full rest period will not have been recorded.

Thanks for the tutorial. But if I may ask, is there a time when you do not need to do a manual entry or do you have to always do a manual entry each day before starting your driving for the day?
You must always do a manual entry as when you put your card in you must make an entry to indicate what you have been doing since you last took the card out. If you don't do a manual entry e.g finish shift at 1800, remove card and go home. Start shift at 0600 put card in, drive (without doing a manual entry). We know you were on daily rest between 1800 - 0600 but if you don't do a manual entry indicating you were resting you may find that rest period being recorded as 'other work' . This normally happens when the tacho machine is left overnight on 'other work'. If you leave the tacho machine on 'rest' overnight you should be ok as rest will be recorded for the period 1800 - 0600. I never do this as during the night the vehicle may be moved (loading etc) and I think (?) this will be recorded on your card if you don't do your own manual entry. Remember, your card is there to record everything you do in each 24 hr period, not just the time you are working or are in the vehicle.

Thanks for the video - does a driver have to manually record his rest periods? Eg. leaves vehicle 6pm Friday with card, gets in cab 9am Monday. Is it just assumed he's rested between Friday evening and Mon morning?
Never assume anything ! All hours must be recorded, even rest. You must do a manual entry to show your weekly rest, just like you would manually record record daily rest. Your digicard is there so you do not break the law, this is only possible if all your activities (driving time, other work, POA, daily rest, weekly rest etc) are recorded. Hope that helps.
Can I ask you a question. What happens when you put the driver's card for the first time? do you have to make any entries. Like other work before you start driving.
Kiril Kirilov You make a manual entry as normal, if you put the card in at 0610 but started your shift at 0600 you make the manual entry as usual. If it is a new card (replacing an old /lost card) you do exactly the same as all your old data will have been downloaded from your old card.
A question you may not have been asked before. I've been retired for 2 years and I am returning to work tomorrow. Is the procedure still the same after that length of time? I remember having problems in the past getting it to go back to the previous month, let alone 2 years ago.
I think the tacho may just display 'rest until now' and prompt you to press OK. If that's the case I'd just press OK then just make sure you select cross hammers. As you haven't driven for so long you'll start with a clean slate anyway.
what is the point of this bleeding manual entry. When I am away I am resting. What has it got to do with this machine needing a manual entry to know what I have been doing. If i were driving another vehicle i would always use my bloody card. seems pointless. please reply.
You have to record what you have been doing for each 24 hour period, when you are 'away' it doesn't necessarily mean you are resting. If you clock on at 0600 and your vehicle isn't ready you could be sat in the transport office doing paperwork (which is not resting), then get your paperwork and keys, get instructions from the transport manager before walking across the yard to your vehicle, all this is 'other work', not 'rest' so must be recorded on your card when you eventually get in your truck at 0630 (or whatever time it is), the manual entry will then show other work from 0600 - 0630. When you eject your card at the end of your shift at 1820 you then walk to the transport office, hand in paperwork, download card (other work) etc and clock off at 1830. The other work between 1820 - 1830 must be accounted for by means of a manual entry when you next insert your card. The machine is only there as a means to record the info to your card, we used to use a paper disc and pen but now it's a digi card and tacho machine ! It's not really pointless as it's the way to record what you are doing when your card is out of the machine, like I said before 'just because your card is out doesn't mean you are not working'.
I was not told how to use the tacho card on the cpc nor during my my driver training. I need to know when I do start working as a driver would I need to do manual entry? Can I not just skip it. If my shift is 6-2 but I start 630 why cant I just take my break and other work as normal . After all it's got nothing to do with the employers the tacho machine registers everything anyway. I am quite confused about the tachometer system thanks
Jak carn As a driver all your time has to be recorded on your card, forget what the machine records as that is only for company requirements. If you start at 0600 and put your card in at 0630 you will not have recorded your duty time and daily/weekly rest correctly. As for the tacho machine 'recording everything anyway', what if you drive different vehicles, what happens when your card gets downloaded by DVSA/VOSA and your office ? What will DVSA/VOSA think when your paperwork shows you started/finished at a particular time which doesn't match the info on your card ? Think of your card as a digital diary.
If I'm driving for a tree surgery company and I'm only driving to a job site in the morning and then back to the yard in the evening then am I supposed to use the tacho? Thanks
If there is a tachometer in the vehicle then yes you are. It’s up to you & your company whether to follow the rules or not. But if you have an accident whether it be large or small. Your gonna get severe punishment if you do not.
hi I'm stuck. I am new to tachograph work and I'm getting loads of infringements. I finished my shift last night and I put tacho on rest. I drove back to Rochdale in a works car and I start my next shift at 4 pm in Rochdale. I then have to drive to Keele services in a work's car prior to starting my duties. What do I need to input into the tacho reader? any help would be appreciated.
The time spent driving back to Rochdale in the works car is still duty time, you didn't finish your shift at Keele you finished at Rochdale. When you start at Rochdale at 4 pm that is the start of your duties not when you start at Keele. If you start at 4 pm and let's say you get to Keele at 6 pm you put your card in , do a manual entry indicating your finish time at Rochdale (the last shift) and then a manual entry indicating this shifts start time which is 4pm. You then have to input that you were doing other work between 4 pm - 6 pm.
Can you help on this? I placed my card in and IM Entry addition appears, I got distracted for a few minutes and the IM Entry addition went off and the mode went on other work. I usually press Yes to IM Entry but on this occasion I got distracted and left it too long and it automatically went on other work. Will this now record me as done other work from when I last took my card out? (Which was 13 hours previously) if this is the case then it's going to be an infringement?? Thanks in advance
If the mode switch had been left on rest overnight you should be OK as that is what will be recorded on your card (though not as accurate as doing a manual entry). If the mode was on other work overnight you will get an infringement recorded. As it was a genuine mistake all you need to do is get a printout and write on the back your previous finish time, your start time and 'wrong mode selected' . As long as it's not a regular occurrence you'll be fine, you will probably have to sign the analysis sheet to acknowledge the mistake. Some people eject their card and leave the mode switch on rest (though you don't have to) so that rest will be recorded next time they insert their card, this helps if you forget to do your manual entry ! Some drivers who never do a manual entry will always put it on rest after ejecting their card then insert at the start of their next shift and just start driving (which I wouldn't recommend) !
Thanks Rockgod. I work for the supermarkets driving fridge trailers. All tractor units are shared through drivers therefore some will leave mode on OtherWork and not Rest before ejecting their card. I inserted my card in one time and forgot to do a Manual entry. I'm not sure what would happens if I miss the manual entry. Will it record me as working still from when I took the card out the day before?
Break should always be recorded when you are on a rest period. Never select POA when you are actually on a daily/weekly rest. 1530 to 0500 will be a daily rest period so should be recorded as such (bed symbol).
Hi. I have one ones these on Mercedes sprinter. It's draining my battery down when not used for weeks. May I ask. Is their a way off switching the power off to this unit Best wishes
I don’t think so as it needs a permanent live feed. All I can suggest is disconnecting your battery when not used ‘for weeks’. The Tacho will then only record a power interruption. You could always fit a battery shut off switch to stop the drain ?
When you been driving for 4 hours and then decide to stop for a 45 minute break, does the Siemens digi reader automatically register you being on break as soon as your engine is switched off?
BigBoss luki When you stop and switch off, the tacho's default is normally 'other work' (crossed hammers) so you then need to select 'rest' if you are stopping for a break. Recently though I used a vehicle which automatically selected 'rest' everytime I stopped, in this case I had to select 'other work' unless I was stopping for rest. Most of the time the default will be other work when switching the ignition off, but always check as you could get in trouble !!
So I've got a massive infringement on working time saying that on the Monday I had only 3 hours working time for the week . This is after bing told by a coc instructor that we now have to show our rest over weekends off . So Friday evening I finished at 19:30 that's card out and off home . I get back Monday morning put my card in it comes up with manual entry ? I hit yesterday and put it on bed from 1930 Friday afternoon til 6am Monday . Yet still got an infringement saying I've got three hours left working for week .
Is that 'Duty Time' or 'Working Time Directive' ? I don't know what your issue is though WTD may have something to do with it. The only other thing I can think of is you made a mistake when doing your manual entry. Also, you put your card in on Monday morning 'and hit yesterday', does this mean you only made a manual entry from Sunday instead of Friday ?
Officially it’s 0100 on Sunday morning. This is so ‘Local Time’ can be displayed. Your Tachograph (automatically) only records ‘European Time’ so it makes no difference to your records what ‘Local Time’ is set at. The only reason ‘Local Time’ is displayed is for your own convenience. If you don’t change the time on your Tachograph it doesn’t matter with regards to your hours.

Don’t see the point of filming the same kind of thing all the time especially when there are loads of other drivers now with channels. I was never interested in views, likes and getting subscribers. hi there I don't drive very often e.g every other week sometimes three weeks in between but during this time I do other work no driving do I have to put my last shift on my card from that job
I'm in same boat with a factory job full time and driving every other Sunday. I was told rather than do manual entry for each shift for the week it's fine to write the start/finish time and date of each of the weeks shift days on back of scrap Tachograph paper BEFORE u start your driving shift incase you get stopped.
I can't remember as it's been a long time since I used one of these tachos . Either the tacho (by default) will 'assume' OK has been pressed or you will need to press 'back' and start again, sorry I can't give a precise answer.
Personally, I would always do a manual entry at the start of a shift to confirm what I have done since the card was last ejected. Even to show your shift finished at 1800 though you may have taken your card out at 1758. You would also do a manual entry to show your shift started at 0600 though the card wasn't put in 'til 0602. Doing this confirms you were on rest between 1800 - 0600. Printouts only give a 24 hour period on any given date not for the shift you are working. Basically 24 hrs of info from midnight to midnight. If you work a night shift and go past midnight you would need 2 printouts. This gets complicated as these printouts would also include data from your previous night shift ! Hope that makes sense ???
can you help? friday - 24.7.15 card removed. sat - rest sun - rest mon - other work - 0600 to 16:30 ( i didn't insert card in slot two as was working as drivers mate. i would need to enter as "other work" manually? how would i enter this?
Gary Hiscutt If you 'worked' all day as a drivers mate (no driving) you still need to record what you have done. If you forgot to insert your card on Monday you then insert on Tuesday, the display will indicate to you the last time the card was removed (Friday), you then OK your finish time. The display will then jump forward to Tuesday as you've just put your card in and ask if this is your start time, you then select NO and scroll backwards to Monday morning at 0600 and OK this as your start time, you can then scroll through Monday and select what you where doing at what time eg having a break and at your finish time select rest. You then scroll through to your start time Tuesday and select 'other work'. Hope you can understand that ??
Just take your time, if you mess up just do a printout and write on it you made a mistake with the manual entry. Remember, all you are doing is recording what you are doing, think of it as a (digital) diary .
Emerson Legaspi It depends if you are starting a daily rest period or not ? If you are, arrive at Calais and select 'rest', wait until you start to board the ferry then go into the menu and select 'ferry mode' (this allows you to interupt your rest), now drive on ferry (tacho will now show driving) and park up, select 'rest' again until you are about to leave the ferry. Select 'ferry mode' again and drive off the ferry, then find somewhere to finish your rest period. You can not interupt your rest period for more than 1 hour so if you took 10 mins to get on the ferry you now have 50 mins to find somewhere to finish your rest ! Hope that helps, (even though it sounds complicated).
Are you trying to do a manual entry at the end of your shift ? You can only do the manual entry when you put your card in at the start your next shift.
That's what I'm trying to do,finish in the morning and start again. at 19.00. Just add 15 other work to when I ended ,but for some reason this won't have it
Without seeing what you are doing I can't really help. The best thing to do is ask another driver at the start of your shift . Did you press OK after adding the 15 mins other work.
Digital Tachographs will always record the time in UTC , which is (kind of) European time (regardless of which country you are in).UTC time never has to be changed forward or back and is programmed into the tachograph. This is so a seemless time can be recorded if you travel through different countries and different time zones.For the drivers convenience you can set the 'local time' in the menu to display the correct time in whichever country you are in, local time is just displayed and not recorded unless 'local time' happens to be the same as 'UTC time'.To change 'local time' eg when the clocks go forward/back, you just go into the menu and manually change the time.Sounds complicated (though it isn't), hope you understood my explanation ?
All tachograph machines are set to 'European Time' and will always record information in this time setting. You can set your clock to display 'local time' for your convenience though this is not what is recorded. This 'European Time' setting is set to the same time whether you are in England, Portugal or Greece etc even though 'local time' in these Countries will be different.
***** I figured it out now. Driving time on print out shows how much time I drove before and after brake. Last week I 4h29m driving then 45min brake and then I drove 23 min to depot. On print out it showed 4h52min driving and I thought I gone over but I didn't. Hope it make sense to you

It wouldn't show rest that's why you have to do a manual entry. If you get pulled by the DVSA (VOSA) and they ask what you've been doing for the last couple of months and you say resting/holiday your card info should back this up, if you take your card out without a manual entry the last couple of months off may be recorded as 'other work'.I think the only way it works without a manual entry is if you take your card out and leave the tacho on break. When you put your card in the next day it will still be on break, I think this is then recorded as a break though I'm not certain as I always do manual entries.
Ok that's fine then as I put it on break before I took the card out fingers crossed it's recorded as break...... Another one I totally forgot to ask about is doing entrys for British summer time what's that all about bud ? Thanks for the help
No it’s actually very straight forward. Regs are for safety & to cover yourself & the company that pays you. Once you understand fully how to do the entries life on the road is very simple & straight forward. Look at it this way, imagine an HGV driver kills your family in a car....he said he had only been working for 2 hours. When truth has it he had been working for over 6 without a break. At least you could see him getting banged up & you can sue the company for damages well in excess of what you would of got hadn’t the tachometer regs where not in place.
NO, it’s a rigmarole ! We can send a man into space, have self driving cars but can’t design a smart card that doesn’t need manual entries, it’s a joke.

You just take it out. Doesn’t matter what mode the Tacho is on when there is no card in it.

Start shift at 0600 put card in, drive (without doing a manual entry).
We know you were on daily rest between 1800 - 0600 but if you don't do a manual entry indicating you were resting you may find that rest period being recorded as 'other work' . This normally happens when the tacho machine is left overnight on 'other work'.
If you leave the tacho machine on 'rest' overnight you should be ok as rest will be recorded for the period 1800 - 0600. I never do this as during the night the vehicle may be moved (loading etc) and I think (?) this will be recorded on your card if you don't do your own manual entry.
Remember, your card is there to record everything you do in each 24 hr period, not just the time you are working or are in the vehicle.

Thanks for the video - does a driver have to manually record his rest periods? Eg. leaves vehicle 6pm Friday with card, gets in cab 9am Monday. Is it just assumed he's rested between Friday evening and Mon morning?
Never assume anything !
All hours must be recorded, even rest.
You must do a manual entry to show your weekly rest, just like you would manually record record daily rest.
Your digicard is there so you do not break the law, this is only possible if all your activities (driving time, other work, POA, daily rest, weekly rest etc) are recorded.

Can I ask you a question. What happens when you put the driver's card for the first time? do you have to make any entries. Like other work before you start driving.
Kiril Kirilov You make a manual entry as normal, if you put the card in at 0610 but started your shift at 0600 you make the manual entry as usual.
If it is a new card (replacing an old /lost card) you do exactly the same as all your old data will have been downloaded from your old card.
A question you may not have been asked before. I've been retired for 2 years and I am returning to work tomorrow. Is the procedure still the same after that length of time? I remember having problems in the past getting it to go back to the previous month, let alone 2 years ago.
I think the tacho may just display 'rest until now' and prompt you to press OK.
If that's the case I'd just press OK then just make sure you select cross hammers.
As you haven't driven for so long you'll start with a clean slate anyway.

what is the point of this bleeding manual entry. When I am away I am resting. What has it got to do with this machine needing a manual entry to know what I have been doing. If i were driving another vehicle i would always use my bloody card. seems pointless. please reply.
You have to record what you have been doing for each 24 hour period, when you are 'away' it doesn't necessarily mean you are resting. If you clock on at 0600 and your vehicle isn't ready you could be sat in the transport office doing paperwork (which is not resting), then get your paperwork and keys, get instructions from the transport manager before walking across the yard to your vehicle, all this is 'other work', not 'rest' so must be recorded on your card when you eventually get in your truck at 0630 (or whatever time it is), the manual entry will then show other work from 0600 - 0630. When you eject your card at the end of your shift at 1820 you then walk to the transport office, hand in paperwork, download card (other work) etc and clock off at 1830. The other work between 1820 - 1830 must be accounted for by means of a manual entry when you next insert your card. The machine is only there as a means to record the info to your card, we used to use a paper disc and pen but now it's a digi card and tacho machine ! It's not really pointless as it's the way to record what you are doing when your card is out of the machine, like I said before 'just because your card is out doesn't mean you are not working'.
I was not told how to use the tacho card on the cpc nor during my my driver training. I need to know when I do start working as a driver would I need to do manual entry? Can I not just skip it. If my shift is 6-2 but I start 630 why cant I just take my break and other work as normal . After all it's got nothing to do with the employers the tacho machine registers everything anyway. Jak carn As a driver all your time has to be recorded on your card, forget what the machine records as that is only for company requirements. If you start at 0600 and put your card in at 0630 you will not have recorded your duty time and daily/weekly rest correctly. As for the tacho machine 'recording everything anyway', what if you drive different vehicles, what happens when your card gets downloaded by DVSA/VOSA and your office ?
What will DVSA/VOSA think when your paperwork shows you started/finished at a particular time which doesn't match the info on your card ?
Think of your card as a digital diary.

If there is a tachometer in the vehicle then yes you are.
It’s up to you & your company whether to follow the rules or not. But if you have an accident whether it be large or small. Your gonna get severe punishment if you do not.

hi I'm stuck. I am new to tachograph work and I'm getting loads of infringements. I finished my shift last night and I put tacho on rest. I drove back to Rochdale in a works car and I start my next shift at 4 pm in Rochdale. I then have to drive to Keele services in a work's car prior to starting my duties. What do I need to input into the tacho reader? any help would be appreciated.
The time spent driving back to Rochdale in the works car is still duty time, you didn't finish your shift at Keele you finished at Rochdale. When you start at Rochdale at 4 pm that is the start of your duties not when you start at Keele. If you start at 4 pm and let's say you get to Keele at 6 pm you put your card in , do a manual entry indicating your finish time at Rochdale (the last shift) and then a manual entry indicating this shifts start time which is 4pm. You then have to input that you were doing other work between 4 pm - 6 pm.

Can you help on this? I placed my card in and IM Entry addition appears, I got distracted for a few minutes and the IM Entry addition went off and the mode went on other work. I usually press Yes to IM Entry but on this occasion I got distracted and left it too long and it automatically went on other work. Will this now record me as done other work from when I last took my card out? (Which was 13 hours previously) if this is the case then it's going to be an infringement?? Thanks in advance
If the mode switch had been left on rest overnight you should be OK as that is what will be recorded on your card (though not as accurate as doing a manual entry). If the mode was on other work overnight you will get an infringement recorded.
As it was a genuine mistake all you need to do is get a printout and write on the back your previous finish time, your start time and 'wrong mode selected' . As long as it's not a regular occurrence you'll be fine, you will probably have to sign the analysis sheet to acknowledge the mistake.
Some people eject their card and leave the mode switch on rest (though you don't have to) so that rest will be recorded next time they insert their card, this helps if you forget to do your manual entry !
Some drivers who never do a manual entry will always put it on rest after ejecting their card then insert at the start of their next shift and just start driving (which I wouldn't recommend) !
Thanks Rockgod. I work for the supermarkets driving fridge trailers. All tractor units are shared through drivers therefore some will leave mode on OtherWork and not Rest before ejecting their card. I inserted my card in one time and forgot to do a Manual entry. I'm not sure what would happens if I miss the manual entry. Will it record me as working still from when I took the card out the day before?
So from 1 day to next should that still go on break i.e i finished at 15.30 yesterday n im booked to start at 5am next day? Or is that POA?
Break should always be recorded when you are on a rest period. Never select POA when you are actually on a daily/weekly rest. 1530 to 0500 will be a daily rest period so should be recorded as such (bed symbol).

I don’t think so as it needs a permanent live feed. All I can suggest is disconnecting your battery when not used ‘for weeks’.
The Tacho will then only record a power interruption.
You could always fit a battery shut off switch to stop the drain ?

When you been driving for 4 hours and then decide to stop for a 45 minute break, does the Siemens digi reader automatically register you being on break as soon as your engine is switched off?
BigBoss luki When you stop and switch off, the tacho's default is normally 'other work' (crossed hammers) so you then need to select 'rest' if you are stopping for a break. Recently though I used a vehicle which automatically selected 'rest' everytime I stopped, in this case I had to select 'other work' unless I was stopping for rest.
Most of the time the default will be other work when switching the ignition off, but always check as you could get in trouble !!

So I've got a massive infringement on working time saying that on the Monday I had only 3 hours working time for the week . This is after bing told by a coc instructor that we now have to show our rest over weekends off . So Friday evening I finished at 19:30 that's card out and off home . I get back Monday morning put my card in it comes up with manual entry ? I hit yesterday and put it on bed from 1930 Friday afternoon til 6am Monday . Yet still got an infringement saying I've got three hours left working for week .
Is that 'Duty Time' or 'Working Time Directive' ?
I don't know what your issue is though WTD may have something to do with it.
The only other thing I can think of is you made a mistake when doing your manual entry. Also, you put your card in on Monday morning 'and hit yesterday', does this mean you only made a manual entry from Sunday instead of Friday ?

Officially it’s 0100 on Sunday morning. This is so ‘Local Time’ can be displayed. Your Tachograph (automatically) only records ‘European Time’ so it makes no difference to your records what ‘Local Time’ is set at. The only reason ‘Local Time’ is displayed is for your own convenience. If you don’t change the time on your Tachograph it doesn’t matter with regards to your hours.

hi there I don't drive very often e.g every other week sometimes three weeks in between but during this time I do other work no driving do I have to put my last shift on my card from that job
I'm in same boat with a factory job full time and driving every other Sunday. I was told rather than do manual entry for each shift for the week it's fine to write the start/finish time and date of each of the weeks shift days on back of scrap Tachograph paper BEFORE u start your driving shift incase you get stopped.

Either the tacho (by default) will 'assume' OK has been pressed or you will need to press 'back' and start again, sorry I can't give a precise answer.

Personally, I would always do a manual entry at the start of a shift to confirm what I have done since the card was last ejected. Even to show your shift finished at 1800 though you may have taken your card out at 1758. You would also do a manual entry to show your shift started at 0600 though the card wasn't put in 'til 0602. Doing this confirms you were on rest between 1800 - 0600.
Printouts only give a 24 hour period on any given date not for the shift you are working. Basically 24 hrs of info from midnight to midnight. If you work a night shift and go past midnight you would need 2 printouts. This gets complicated as these printouts would also include data from your previous night shift !

Gary Hiscutt If you 'worked' all day as a drivers mate (no driving) you still need to record what you have done.
If you forgot to insert your card on Monday you then insert on Tuesday, the display will indicate to you the last time the card was removed (Friday), you then OK your finish time.
The display will then jump forward to Tuesday as you've just put your card in and ask if this is your start time, you then select NO and scroll backwards to Monday morning at 0600 and OK this as your start time, you can then scroll through Monday and select what you where doing at what time eg having a break and at your finish time select rest. You then scroll through to your start time Tuesday and select 'other work'.

Just take your time, if you mess up just do a printout and write on it you made a mistake with the manual entry. Remember, all you are doing is recording what you are doing, think of it as a (digital) diary .
How to use that tacho when boarding on ferry from France to UK
Emerson Legaspi It depends if you are starting a daily rest period or not ?
If you are, arrive at Calais and select 'rest', wait until you start to board the ferry then go into the menu and select 'ferry mode' (this allows you to interupt your rest), now drive on ferry (tacho will now show driving) and park up, select 'rest' again until you are about to leave the ferry. Select 'ferry mode' again and drive off the ferry, then find somewhere to finish your rest period. You can not interupt your rest period for more than 1 hour so if you took 10 mins to get on the ferry you now have 50 mins to find somewhere to finish your rest !

All I can guess is you’re selecting the wrong mode. It should only record drive time when the vehicle is moving.

You can only do the manual entry when you put your card in at the start your next shift.
That's what I'm trying to do,finish in the morning and start again. at 19.00.
Just add 15 other work to when I ended ,but for some reason this won't have it
Without seeing what you are doing I can't really help.
The best thing to do is ask another driver at the start of your shift .
Did you press OK after adding the 15 mins other work.
It didn't give me the option ,I'm just asking other drivers ,seems some machines are different others

Digital Tachographs will always record the time in UTC , which is (kind of) European time (regardless of which country you are in).UTC time never has to be changed forward or back and is programmed into the tachograph. This is so a seemless time can be recorded if you travel through different countries and different time zones.For the drivers convenience you can set the 'local time' in the menu to display the correct time in whichever country you are in, local time is just displayed and not recorded unless 'local time' happens to be the same as 'UTC time'.To change 'local time' eg when the clocks go forward/back, you just go into the menu and manually change the time.Sounds complicated (though it isn't), hope you understood my explanation ?

All tachograph machines are set to 'European Time' and will always record information in this time setting. You can set your clock to display 'local time' for your convenience though this is not what is recorded. This 'European Time' setting is set to the same time whether you are in England, Portugal or Greece etc even though 'local time' in these Countries will be different.
***** I figured it out now. Driving time on print out shows how much time I drove before and after brake. Last week I 4h29m driving then 45min brake and then I drove 23 min to depot. On print out it showed 4h52min driving and I thought I gone over but I didn't. Hope it make sense to you

It wouldn't show rest that's why you have to do a manual entry. If you get pulled by the DVSA (VOSA) and they ask what you've been doing for the last couple of months and you say resting/holiday your card info should back this up, if you take your card out without a manual entry the last couple of months off may be recorded as 'other work'.I think the only way it works without a manual entry is if you take your card out and leave the tacho on break. When you put your card in the next day it will still be on break, I think this is then recorded as a break though I'm not certain as I always do manual entries.

No it’s actually very straight forward.
Regs are for safety & to cover yourself & the company that pays you.
Once you understand fully how to do the entries life on the road is very simple & straight forward.
Look at it this way, imagine an HGV driver kills your family in a car....he said he had only been working for 2 hours. When truth has it he had been working for over 6 without a break.
At least you could see him getting banged up & you can sue the company for damages well in excess of what you would of got hadn’t the tachometer regs where not in place.
NO, it’s a rigmarole ! We can send a man into space, have self driving cars but can’t design a smart card that doesn’t need manual entries, it’s a joke.
