For me personally, these sort of mornings in both the Spring and the Autumn are the most beautiful and lovely.

wonderfully shot, and good to see more HSTs doing the heavy lifting between the central belt and the north. Hopefully should see more 5 car sets soon

Surprisingly large railway station in the fair City of Perth.
When you consider that Dundee is Scotland's fourth largest station but only has 4 platforms, but Perth has 7.
However it's where Perth is located is the key.
On the right side of the country for the line coming up from Glasgow and Stirling, then if you continue you up from there it's more or less straight up to Aviemore and Inverness in the Highlands.
If you travel East from Perth you are less than half an hour from Dundee and the East Coast mainline.
The line that meanders down to the South East brings you out at Ladybank in Fife, again on the East Coast mainline then allows you to call in at Kirkcaldy and Inverkeithing before crossing the Forth and into the Scottish capital of Edinburgh.

While Perth station is probably too big for its current usage there isn't really anything "surprising" about its size when you consider its history. It was a major junction mainly between the Highland and Caledonian Railways. The line going north used to be the main line to Aberdeen (via Forfar) as well as Inverness. The "meandering" line via Ladybank was just a branch and Edinburgh trains went south via Kinross on a line that is now under the M90 motorway. The current line to Dundee was also just a branch and only became the route to Aberdeen after closure of the Forfar route in 1967. There was substantial local traffic to places like Aberfeldy and Bankfoot and Perth was the starting point for several long distance express trains. It also generated substantial seasonal traffic for things like grouse shooting and it was a big freight hub. At one time Perth had two steam MPDs - Caledonian Railway where the Edinburgh Road Tesco now stands and Highland Railway just north of the station where Aldi now is. It was also the place where the trains to Aberdeen and Inverness (often double headed) took water. If you can get hold of the two volumes of "Steam in Scotland" by WJV Anderson they contain many photographs of Perth in its heyday and show what a busy place it was.
