I have the regular milkweed, but I hope to have more varieties added to my gardens. Butterfly heaven. And it smells lovely!

Spotted Joe-Pye weed is a perennial plant native to North America. It can grow as tall as 7 feet. It is often found in damp or wet areas, such as marshlands and swamps, and it produces purplish-pink colored flowers at the top of stems that are purple or green with purple spots.
Yup, that’s what it is! Easy to mistake for milkweed.

Here's a couple of things you can try to stop losing those flail hammers so frequently.
Put some high-strength threadlocker on those bolts. There are Loctite Red products that are so strong that the nuts will only be removable by heating with a torch.
Or, replace the plain nuts with nyloc nuts.
Or, use longer bolts and double-nut them.
All of these ideas sound very good to me!😊
I think a foolproof method of preventing the nuts from loosing by themselves is to weld the nuts onto the bolts. If you have to replace a broken hammer, just use an angle grinder on the nut or bolt. That might seem like a drastic fix, but I think it's the only method that's guaranteed to prevent losing a hammer. Because, no matter what else you do, I don't think the bolts and nuts will stay tight enough
Just trying to re-tighten down the existing nuts tighter than before is a lost cause. I think it's a bad design to rely on just bolt and nut tension to resist them being shocked loose. Trying to make them tighter will just deform the mounts slightly more than before. But, it seems to me that the nuts are getting lose because when the hammers hit any object that's harder than grass (e.g. rocks, ground, tree branches, etc), the hammers are hitting with enough force to shock and deform the mounts even more, which causes the nuts to lose tension and loosen a bit on each blow.
What you need is a mounting method that doesn't just depend on deforming the mounts and stretching the bolts enough for them to have enough tension to resist the impact forces. In other words, you have to use a nut locking method that prevents already loose nuts from loosening more -- it shouldn't matter even if the bolts are already loose enough to turn freely in the mounts. In other words, you need nut retainer method like how a spindle nut is retained on an axle using cotter pings, or foldover retainers, or grub screws through the nuts, etc etc etc. With such designs the nuts are installed loose but it's impossible for a nut to spin even looser, until the locking mechanism is removed.
@@bruceadler-9410 I really like that castle nut idea. That would be a good way to keep them there as long as the cotter pins don't get pulled out by grass sticking in them. Or breaking the cotter pins. Thanks for sharing that idea. I vote to try it. I have no idea if castle nuts are easy to find in that size. They usually are at the end of shafts so that makes sense. Enjoy your class Damogran Heart! I can hear the teen-aged son upstairs making stuff for the tea party he'll have this afternoon. He has the classical music blasting and the mixer working! So fun! He made a beautiful cheesecake last night. He mixed up some cinnamon roll bread last night and had it proofing overnight. I'm so glad he and my older son have been friends since kindergarten. My other son has visited here over many years too. He was just a year younger than them. I am so blessed to have them in my life. My host's son is a music major at college and now my son is going to his same college and getting a dorm room there. It'll be great that they at least share the same campus. My oldest son, the 41 year old one, works at the campus delivering sandwiches! When they were at high school together, my host's son and my next older son, they took most of the advanced placement classes together. My son would tutor their son in math because he had so much extracurricular stuff like performing in all the high school plays, being in the band, and a special choir in high school that he needed help to learn the hard math too. He's an amazing young man. I'll be so fun to hear them enjoying themselves today.
Raise your 3 point lift to mow the grass higher and set a stop on the lift to have a consistent height. Regarding the hammers, you will hit less rocks if you mow higher. With nuts coming lose on the mower, you Igor use some lock tite to fix the nuts so they do not vibrate loose. You are living the dream guys, but it is a result of hard work and smart planning ahead. Great videos.
A Belt & Braces way would be to use Nyloc nuts as well as Loctite. Nyloc's are less prone to loosening due to vibration.
im thinking he is just going to go through some hammers with new pasture. eventually high spots will be worked out the more you use it on the pasture. the land will shape itself to the machine. its either that or get a power rake to smooth out the rough spots.
It seems that the nuts are coming loose more then the hammers breaking, tighten all nuts then put some weld on nut& bolt, if hammer breaks cut bolt off and replace them.

I think when it's in the down position, it's not directly supported by the 3 point hitch. I think the mower attachment has a pivot which is supposed to allow it to float on its skid plates. That's so it can automatically conform to the slope of the ditch/ground.
This is my favorite U tube channel and has been going back to when I could watch it more days of the week. The hard work, thought and planning by Al and Gina makes it special. I like the idea of rebuilding the manure spreader or at least replacing the rotted or broken boards and repairing or redoing the gearing and control levers.
Regarding the Manure Spreader, you might like to have a look at Engles Coach Shop where he is doing just that.
For your mower attachment, you could try Nylock nuts which are nuts with a nylon insert to lock the nut on.

Don’t want to be a critic, but, it would be better on your tractor if would allways but the 3 point hitch down when you stop so that the cylinders and hose are not under pressure all the time. I see you are like me and haven’t mover all my trailers and equipment to a central location.

A suggestion for your mower attachment; maybe try using longer bolts to attach the hammers and install a second nut as a retainer to lock the nut on. Use grade 8 or stainless steel bolts. Worth a try 😊
That would be an improvement. It would depend on how tightly he could tighten the nuts against each other rather than against the mounting bracket. But I think it still might not be enough to resist the impact forces generated by hitting objects like hard ground, rocks, roots and branches, etc). In other words, even double-nuts can be shaken loose if hit hard enough.
I think he should just weld the nuts on.
I also suggest using loc-tite also and double checking them maybe once a week or twice a week just to make sure they’re tight. I mean they’re super easy to access.
I often think when watching them preparing the ground that they never seem to pick up enough of the very many small rocks that are lying around. I know that it can be a boring job but this is what happens if you don't.
@LumnahAcres If the flail was hitting rocks, then the blades would be breaking or bending and not falling off. This seems to be more likely subject to the nuts coming off and the whole blade flying off with the bolt. He needs to check every bolt once a day before mowing, also using 2 lock nuts would help.
@@davidallred4266 I agree. So far he hasn't found a single broken bolt or flail hammer. I think the real problem is that the constant shocks and vibrations of the flail hammers are acting just like an impact wrench and un-torquing the bolts and nuts regardless of how tight they're initially torqued against the mounting ears. I think it's a bad design to just rely on trying to torque the nuts against the mounting ears so tight that they won't unscrew themselves. Instea, I think the nuts have to be locked onto the bolts, not torqued against the mounting ears. I think the easiest fix would be to weld the nuts on the bolts anytime one of them becomes loose. That way the only way he'd lose a flail hammer is if something breaks.

JudithB I just have a small rider. Some areas that grow well, I like to mow throwing the grass on top of the mowed area so it can be raked up after it dries some to feed to the animals. The rest is just lawn full of weeds, etc so I mow in circles throwing the grass to the center to mulch the grass. Depends how you want to use it. At the farm, we cut hay and baled it, then brushhogged the edges and rough areas, plus we turned the cows in to the hay fields to clean the edges too.

If you welded on a couple of 3"x 2" steel tubing, however long your existing skids are, they would help.
I really enjoy the drone shots. I could actually see the difference in the two different mowed spots. Also enjoy seeing those little pigs and Brutus as well as the cows. I'm an animal fan, but it's also good to see the other side of what you do there.

Weld leaf springs on the bottom of the deck to ride on. It should allow how many extra inches of height you choose. The pastures look awesome, I'll bet they look better after they're spread with compost! Love ya'll ❤️
A little love to the manure spreader will extend its life long term. I watched a total rebuild of a bit older spreader on another channel and it was an amazing journey. It was a pile of rotted wood and metal and the end result may be headed to a museum. Thanks for your videos. Can't wait till the next one hits.

Al, you can weld some extra bar stock on the skids to raise the flail mower housing. That's the only thing I can think of that would still have it mechanically solid.

If I may make a suggestion, although you have limited numbers of livestock, I would tighten them down into way smaller areas. I think that may give you better disturbance and incorporate manure better to build pasture, and move faster through your areas during your limited growing season. 😊love ya work…
PS at your stage of pasture renewal go with the slasher, couple of runs shooting it in then reverse direction shooting out. Flail mower is a finishing mower.

You can buy a mulching kit for the Kubota. Also you should check the torque on the knives. There is a spec based on the type of bolt.
Good morning! Looks like you need some blue Loctite for those flail bolts. They must get a lot of vibration. You've got welding equipment: No reason you couldn't fabricate some slides to keep it higher off the ground.

Have you considered using a castellated nut and drilled shank bolt with a cotter pin to hold on those flails? More trouble to assemble, but it would stop them from loosening and coming off during use.

This is just a suggestion. Change your lockout from nylocks to a regular lock nut. That will more then likely fix your problem.

Al, get some 3/8" or 1/2" mild steel plate and you should be able to fabricate extensions to raise the height of the mower. You got the skills and tools to do that.

You should always refurbish something back to It's original glory if it works well. That's just part of the maintenance of it!

I hope you have an excellent visit in New Hampshire. When I visited there many years ago I visited Salisbury Beach and it was very nice. I bet it would be crowded now though. I went near Christmas so it wasn't busy. The Merrimack River is pretty too. It was fun to watch the sun come up over the Atlantic Ocean. I was raised on the west coast so I had only seen the sun set over the ocean. Have a great time!

Al, on the mower you need to figure out what is causing them to disappear. If it is the bolts, switch to grade 8 with grade 8 nuts using red loctite

Al you can use the hydraulic draft control that will stop the hydraulic arms dipping lower thus giving control of the mowing height
Pretty sure it is Joe Pye Weed. Its serrated leaves distinguish it from Swamp Milkweed. Also it’s purple stems
You have a welder Al. You can pick up some steel stock from HD and make extensions for the rails to save your flail blades. You can do it!
Make or weld a bigger skid on the low side to raise up the mower, you know lol!! Pastures looking great!! Stay blessed all!!

The plant on the side of the road looks like Milkweed. The yellow flowers you picked are Black Eyed Susans. I agree the flail mower is riding too low. You could really see it when you were cutting along the driveway. It almost looked scalped in some areas from the drone footage. It wasn't, but it's not mowing much higher than a scalping. I know nothing about tractors but I'm assuming that you can't just keep the boom arm of the tractor up a little higher, instead of putting it all the way down?
I wish you’d have showed more actual mowing than talking about mowing.

AL I think its time to get a different kind of mower thats not constantly requiring putting new blades on it constantly. Seems to me to be a bad design, Maybe look into a used mower in good condition from NH State Auctions. Look for a roadside mower for your road.

@@samvalentine3206 yeah or one of the heavy Duty swell mowers like the State uses on the side of the roads 🛣️. I told AL in another comment to check out the State auction sales where they sell off equipment he may be able to pick up a great condition low hour mower at a great price.
Plus they have a much longer reach than the one he has Sam, which means less time mowing doing the same areas.😁👍🏼
Use Metal to Metal self locking nuts. I that don't work use 2 nuts and jam them. I wouldn't doubt it if you are getting a lot of heat from friction. The flail mower is leveling the high spots.

On early this morning, going out at 5 am to load my meat birds into the trailer to go to the butcher. Someday soon, hope to purchase a plucker. Used 1,000 pounds of feed in 8 weeks for 49 birds! That's with being on pasture. Gotta be some 8 pounders out there when dressed out. First year growing this many. Did not lose any, except one chick DOA. Used Azure's premium corn/soy free organic feed. May rethink feed options next year👨🌾🐔
Want to grow enough someday to make breakfast sausage since both of us are sensitive to pork.

Stover Nuts, 1/4 to 1/2 longer bolts, I would replace all the nuts and bolts on that mower one last time. IMHO Good luck Thx for sharing
