  • TL;DR - it's great, but I want to make it better.

    Totally with you on modding man... at the end of the day, if you're into cars and into driving cars you buy them to drive them and they should be enjoyed! Just drive it, enjoy it, change what you want to change if you think it'll improve the driving experience for you and drive and enjoy it more!! 👍

    I wanted to make this video before I start changing things on the M3, so here's my thoughts on the car as BMW made it, and plans for the future. If you liked the video you know what to do. 👍

      Awesome intro. Just do a small drop on some bilstein shocks & eibach coilovers, lightweight wheels, some geometry mods and some breathing mods. Keep it as a dedicated fast road car.

      DannyDC2 Previously I mentioned please don't mod it (That was the little child in me) But after you've explained the details and plans for the m3 I couldn't agree more. I too believe most mods should be functional in a sense they wont spoil the original. Your vision on how it should handle is bang on!

    With the brakes, its pads and fluid for sure mate. Mine was the same - decent bite on the first stop then spongy unresponsive feel as soon as they had any heat in them. I went for Castrol fuids, OEM disks and some cheap Remsa 650* pads (I'm tight) - It completely transformed the braking feel, stopped sharper and had no fade after 4 laps of Collie.
    Cracking video Danny, summed up the M3 perfectly. Looking forward to seeing what you do with it.

    Superb vid as always, loving the 'drone' shots, ive been a follower for a while, what a motoring adventure you've been on ha! Inspired me to jump into the bmw scene, i had a (bit of a nail) e46 328i se. Its needing a bit/mound of work but buy cheap (£400) and what do you expect ha. Curious...do your bm's have ahem...stiff throttles? Keep up,the awesome work pal!

    • @dannyDC2
      @dannyDC2  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey mate, no stiff throttles here... the E36 is a cable throttle and that's fine, the M3 uses electronic throttle and obviously that's smooth if not a bit dull. Does your car use a throttle cable? I would have thought being an E46 it would be fly by wire.

    • @professionalbodger
      @professionalbodger 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @dannyDC2
      @dannyDC2  7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      It's funny you say that as I was thinking last night, if I slammed it to the ground on some bit gary wheels and straight piped it, I could probably grow my channel quite easily. "IS THIS THE LOUDEST!? E46 M3?!" etc. I'll never do that though. Even if my channel sits at 26k subs forever, at least most of those people are like-minded enthusiasts and I don't have to pretend to be something I'm not. :)

    Lovely car you've got there! I put some HR springs on my old one to reduce the body roll a bit and it still drove nice and smooth with them. Is yours a pig to drive when it's not fully up to temperature? I found the gearbox horrible until all the fluids had heated up

    Good video mate! At 20:45 was this just after Greenhow Hill, I always stop to look at the view. I know the video was more to share your opinion, but seeing as the roads are so class, when you're driving there, have you considered mounting a camera facing forward in the middle of the windscreen? You could have an interior view in the corner, kind of how Matt from TST does. I'm sure I'll run into you soon enough out on these roads.

    Great video Dan. on my m3 so far I've done coilovers, subframe reinforcement, poly bushes and csl air box. Looking at doing the Porsche brakes next. Looking forward to seeing the final drive and steering rack mods on yours il be looking into them

    • @dannyDC2
      @dannyDC2  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Which bushes have you swapped out for poly ones? I'm always a bit worried about doing that on a road car. The E36 has a nice poly/rubber mix which seems to be working quite well.

    • @pw_e46_m3
      @pw_e46_m3 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      DannyDC2 done most of them had the car 5 years now the first ones to go was rta ones did the lollipops at same time then when we did the floor I did all the subframe and anti roll bars mainly because they were looking tired mines a 52 plate too. The coilovers was much more different but on softest setting ride is great on road

    • @dannyDC2
      @dannyDC2  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have no doubt the lollipops will need doing. They were an issue on both my previous E46s! I think it's just the design. It's going to Ti Motorsport soon for the final drive so I'll get them to have a good look over it. Thanks for the reply 👍

    Spot on mate, cars are made to be driven, we all like to look back at our cars as we walk away and then "awesome" but I'm in the same mind set, if I can't go out and have a good drive it's pointless. I agree with all the points you have made to be honest, the dc2 recaros are a pretty good standard seat but even they don't hold you brilliantly, when I fitted a bucket seat in my old skyline it transferred the car, it felt so much more planted into corners as ibwasnt been thrown about and gave me more confidence to push it more. I would also look into new bushes too as already mentioned as well as the mods your planning as 15 year old rubber will definitely be compromised

    • @dannyDC2
      @dannyDC2  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah the bucket seats make a massive difference. Even with the stock seatbelt you feel much more connected to the car!

  • @jordanhammill8429

    Great honest review Dan, I'm currently in the same position as you, standard car but can't help that somethings need to change. Seats and brakes were my biggest concern, I agree full leather seats have no place in a sports performance car, slide all over, made even worse on track as are the brakes. For me the steering seems ok !? Maybe I've just not had anything better? I'll be interested to see what you think of the final drive also. Keep up the good work and enjoy the things you spend your hard earned money on not look after them for someone else!

      @dannyDC2  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think the steering is just one of those things that once you've had it, it's hard to go back! I'll be posting plenty once the 4.1 goes in, so stay tuned 😁

    Gives me an idea what the M3 feels like compared to my modified e36... there are pretty similar things we don't like about the standard version (slow steering, long shifts, the rubbing brakes, seats,..) but after changing them it became a closely perfect fun car and i still love driving it on the road!!
    Good work Dan keep it up

    Congrats on getting your dream car! Modify it to the way you want it no problem! You say it well, you mention the modifications you wont be doing but you don't bag them out, you just point out they aren't for you. If everyone was this accepting the car scene would be even better. Though I think it is a crying shame to see a car modded to the point the performance is ruined, each to their own. As long as they don't mind that I tweak my E46 M3 to my liking while keeping it as stock as possible, then we are going to get along great

    Hey Dan. I agree with all you said except for the suspension and wheels. A lot of people say that those 19 inch wheels are too big and aren't as good as the stock 18s (Chris Harris). I guess it may be because of the extra flex and too small profile tyre. So I would try to put my hands on ones. The suspension, is essential for you to feel the same as you do with the e36. I speak for experience. The steering is highly affected by having the stock suspension on the front. And it shouldn't be that expensive to change.

    • @dannyDC2
      @dannyDC2  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah the 19s are gash mate. I'm trying to get a set of the stock 18s for it.

    Thanks for this video... My 49 year old Dad recently mentioned insurance costs for him on an M3, and said that he wants something more sensible than his '04 Subaru Impreza WRX, maybe an E39 M5... I know right! More sensible! Anyway, were kind of stuck between an E46 M3 or the E39 M5, and this video is helping me choose haha (P.s. We also looked at the E60 M5, but I think my Dad would prefer a manual)

      Yeah I have no doubt that getting older has definitely matured my approach to cars. Few years ago and this would already be lowered with a CSL bootlid. Not that I won't do that in the future, just saying I wont be in a rush :)

    Just got in and saw your notification. I absolutely love that mellow intro, Danny.💙 I don't cuss much in the comments and mean no disrespect to anyone, but that intro is Fucking Epic, sir!🙌👍 Yeah, I played it back a few times.😆 Ok, on with the rest of the show now.
    Edit: This is such an all around well-made video, mate. Very honest commentary and enjoyable to watch. To be fair, I didn't expect anything less. High fives to Mr. rolex.dan on the drone work (which looked great, btw).✋✋ Those things are gamechangers in the video world. No doubt the M3 is a great platform to start with, but the mods you've got in mind will transform the car to a higher state and make it even more enjoyable. I like your plan for the car, Danny... seems well thought out. The 4.1 final drive should give instant gratification.😀 Are you installing that at HCR or elsewhere? That's something I've never tackled and I wouldn't mind seeing the process when you do it. For me, the part starting at 25:38 sums it up best.👌👏 Keep enjoying that M3... that's what it's for. Before closing, I will add, DannyDC2 is not a middle lane type of guy. And that's exactly why we love you, bro! Cheers!✌

  • @friguy4444
    @friguy4444 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks for the vid DannyDC2. You may have ceramic brake pads. Which are better for not throwing as much brake dust but fade faster as well as don't dissipate the heat very well. They're supposed to last a bit longer (wear wise) but the bite is lacking in them. At least that's what the word is from the pro's. I've never used ceramic. Go for the semi metallic pads when you change them. I also think you'll feel a massive improvement in the driving when you get some good new rubber on it. You know what they say, that's the only part that actually contacts the road. I daily an E46 M3 myself and rubber made a world of change that I was amazed by. I'm fortunate to have the purple tag too so I can't comment on not having that rack. Interested in your thoughts on the rear end ratio change too. I find as long as I am on top of the RPM's with the right gear at the right time (hopefully lol) I start to really love ringing the nectar out of that S54. Totally agree on the rest I think. (Maybe the seat but I drive in a very cold winter so heated seats aren't going anywhere lol). Thanks again for the vid. Good job.

    • @dannyDC2
      @dannyDC2  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the S54 will feel ALIVE with the 4.1, it feels far from lazy now, but the gearing should spice things up a bit! I'm going to regret taking the heated seats out, hopefully I won't be using it much in winter anyway :)

    If you complain about the slow steering on the m3 imagine what its like to live with a stock e36 steering ratio, sometimes I feel like I need 3 hands in some turns haha.
    I know that the m3 will only get better with you as an owner Dan, you have proven that you have a good taste and that above all you are a driver and you only want your cars to drive better so Im confident of what the m3 will transform into.
    Just a quick note, when you change your diff you might want to drop the rear subframe and reinforce it, I know you said yours had no cracks but thats because the previous owners didnt do what you will do with the car which is drive it as it was intended to be driven, so if you plan on keeping it for long which it seems like you will just do that to be safe.
    Anyways nice video as always! Cheers from Spain!
