Artists and the gift of sensitivity

  • Have you ever felt more sensitive than others? I notice this, especially when I’m with my non-artist friends. I’m more easily annoyed if music is too loud or the lighting too bright. As artists, we have a heightened sensitivity and awareness about everything and it can feel like a curse.. It’s just overwhelming to feel so much! But this sensitivity is really a gift that brings forth possibilities in our life and in our art.
Let me share what I mean...
Leaning into your sensitivities awakens your intuition, leading you to meaningful experiences. Art-making is the process of cultivating our sensitivities. The more nuanced we become in our art, the more powerfully and sensitively the work communicates who we truly are. We can all tune in to this superpower.
How is this sensitivity superpower showing up in your work and your life?
Let me know in the comments.
In this week’s Art2Life podcast I talk more about reframing our sensitivities as a good thing and not a problem. I hope you’ll join me.

Yes, I'm right up there with the sensitivity: sound, how people modulate their voices (cannot stand some radio anchors), quality of light. Finding shapes, making friends with the tree near my studio. And on and on. Sometimes it is difficult to bear when the environment is. not right for me. My husband goes crazy when I must turn off TV commercials, one by one, every time. But this is me and I own up to it. There are more advantages than disadvantages. The sound of the breeze, the feel of the woods, the sound of running water. We pay the price for extra sensitivity but it is well worth it!

I am learning to LOVE my sensitivity after years of the corporate world telling/yelling "don't take it personally" 🥴. I have recognized that I didn't TAKE it personally, I FELT it personally. There's a subtle difference in perspective and when I made that pivot, I loved myself more and became The Artist. ❤🙏❤

Oh my gosh… this is so me!! Sometimes I’ve seen it as a negative…bc I do feel too much, and pick up everyone’s vibe in a room. But yes..now I realize it is a gift, and to use it for my art! Thank you for bringing this to light Nicholas❤️

Yep! I'm a classic "your too sensitive" 60's baby who thankfully finally figured it out. If I can't express the leftovers from 'overwhelm' into something such as art; then I go into a mini-meltdown myself. I used to think I was no one (bit exaggerated), but I wasn't happy if I didn't make art. And I didn't make it for a long time (like real artists;). Now I am making art through the challenges of my life anyway and see that it's the art that is nothing unless I release my sensitivity on it. And that is fun for me. And if it works out cool, then great! A kind of transference from the outside sensitivities through to the inside and out again. Great video Nic. Thank you

Like others have said this really resonates with me. I think this is our superpower and I have embraced it. I think this is necessary for the creatives...the writers, painters, inventors etc. it fuels our creativity. So if someone tells you.."you are too sensitive". say "yep, that's my superpower!!!"

Thank you so much for this statement. I know I am a HSP and sometimes it is a gift...and sometimes I wish to be normal. In my artwork I like it...but when family life is stressful...uhhhh. To know I am not alone in this world is good to know.

I totally agree, we give feelings to every thing we see and walk pass by… as I like to say “ within each square in our life there is feelings, and these feelings can’t be moved to next square “

Yes! I always assume everyone has this ability-but that's not true. It is a gift-a double edged sword kind of gift.. I often see the down side of it. Really like the re-frame of seeing it's value to our art.

OMG! Thank you for putting all this into words! I've always known this about myself - but others have usually been critical --- at last after hearing you and reading some of the comments here, I know I'm not the only one!!! Best wishes to you and all your subscribers who have these same experiences!!

This made me smile because it is so so relevant to me and how I am as a person. I annoy everyone in my family with my sensitivity’s.

Hi Nicholas. Thank you for bringing this topic up and sharing the value of what a gift it is. I rely on my" overly sensitive nature" as a guide in life and art. I had to learn this over time and I'm glad I grew to appreciate my gift, rather than try to change myself.

Thank you, I find that I like quiet places. I do get distracted if some one is in the room making any kind of noise.
    My attention span
is not as good as it use to be. But I know I need more time to work on that.

So grateful to hear that being sensitive is a great gift to have especially in a creative way. I have recognized it many times like when my intuition kicks in.
I really though I had something going on and it made me feel stronger and less vulnerable especially in front of people that try to put you down.
One day when I was diagnosed with ADHD at the age of 50 it disturbed me a great deal. And my gift it seemed to have vanished. But now I know it was impossible I just couldn’t describe what it was or how I felt. Why my heart starts beating harder or I feel anxious and my brain doesn’t stop thinking and it gets cluttered like in my art work. I would like to read more about this so I can go back to that awesome feeling of self estime and courage and not be so hesitant on what I want to express. Being too sensitive has put me in situations with people who don’t understand. Even when I express myself I notice people don’t listen, or misinterpret what I mean! I’m going nuts especially with my adult kids. So I decided to be less exposed to people I don’t get along with where the communication is not so great. I though that the pandemic situation was a reason that people are getting crazy or is it me? Since the confinement I was loving staying home with my husband and doing project like with Art2life.
I tell you Nick, I too feel like I have been saved by Art2Life. I still have a lot to learn even though I have been an artist all my life but becoming one for the rest of my life is another challenging journey I’m enjoying immensely 🥰
Just loved and appreciated the subject of your video. It seemed to come at the right moment where I am in the peak of my sensitivity and just dying to get back to my art!
So I am really looking forward to your next pod cast coming up.
Best wishes to everyone for a most creative year in a safe and serene environment and much success with great projects🥳

Amazing Nick, this is a beautiful way to describe it. Thank you so much for this video, it really resonates with me. Spot on with every example you mention. I've always been very sensitive, but since I started to make visual art I feel SO much more at ease with this trait. I love that I can see things that not everyone sees and that I can show it to the world through my art. Like you say - the art making wouldn't be possible without the sensitivity.

Excellent trailer. Sensitivität refers to senses, so visual sensitivity, acoustic etc. my point: different people may have different thresholds for different things. Maybe common sense anyway

Thank you Nicholas, wonderful subject as usual... I have to say not only me, every body around me, knows how sensitive I am. And for a long time I was thinking it was so hard. Later on, I discovered that I have to make art,(which I born with as a hobby,) but in fact it is not like that, it is a necessity, and I can use my sensitivity positively. the way I see, hear and notice things is different, so this is the way in which I can make art, and even beeing influenced by others art.
It is realy a gift, hard but very precious , I believe we pay too much for beeing artists, and it really deserves...!
