I first sung this as a very very small girl in the 1960s at Catholic school. It remains as beautiful today as then and particularly when sung so well by these impressive young men.
A song that stirs deep melancholy, beginning like a soft prayer, a whispered meditation. The soul trembles in mourning and reflection, asking, "Were you there? Were you there? " Yet, would you truly want to witness the horror of the crucifixion? The anguished soul laments through the night, lost in sorrow. But with the dawn comes triumph-Christ rises from the dead, and the soul, once heavy with grief, feels like bursting forth in joyful exclamation, "Glory! Glory! Glory! " Thank you for the beautiful singing.
I feel like shouting GLORY! when I watch and hear this magnificent choir sing this inspiring hymn. They are the modern version of Helaman's stripping warriors! I am a proud (And humble) graduate of BYU! "God's University". No doubt about it! Semper Fi! 🫡🤗🙏👍
I take issue with worship music that is overly repetitive (it feels a bit brainwash-y), however it can be well don’t when each recycle of the phrase brings a new perspective on what is being said. A building of message with each repetition. This song exemplifies that feeling very beautifully! (Also, a bit of repetitive songs become very irreverent. We’re You There gives reverence to the subject)
Yes - we should have stated more accurately in the description that this is a new recording, not a new song. In the full TH-cam description, we do acknowledge its origins as a spiritual. Thank you for sharing your comment.
Ohhhh.......the beautiful, pure tone of men's voices. So lovely! Great job from the arranger, conductor and chorus. Thank you!!

This broke me down. Absolutely beautiful harmonies and arrangement. I envision this is what Heaven sounds like
Skillfully arranged, beautifully performed, and meticulously trained. Well done, Mr. Wells and BYU Men’s Chorus.
My church's choir is singing this at our Good Friday service tonight. If we can sound one-tenth as good, I will be ecstatic.
We sang it as a congregation last night. Lovely song but hard for untrained voices to do justice to it. This version was awesome
Your choir will be lovely. Every participant will feel the Spirit and that is wonderful.
How did your church's choir sound?
Amazing! May the Holy Spirit be with you all.❤🙏

New music? This song is from the 1800s, and is a spiritual, and all other denominations in know this song. So late to the game.
