    Liz I want to start making my own jewelry in several different mediums... so I love to research everything thoroughly before I start, costs, materials, ease of use, etc.. I've watched over 100 videos and read over 200 diy and how to's. yours is the best by far, easy to follow, explanative, very thorough. You've won a fan for life. This is the first time I've ever left a comment on any of them. Thank you for everything your an awesome teacher.

    You can dip your shells in muriatic acid for three seconds, then dip them in regular water to rinse. It will take most of the calcified surface off and leave the lacquer sheen. I quite enjoyed the video.

    • @LizKreate
      @LizKreate  8 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Thanks for watching Candice. I haven't tried using muriatic acid and probably never will as we have a restriction of availability of acids for the general public here in Australia. Cheers, Liz

    • @Titchtheclown

      Muriatic acid is used widely in concrete cleaning and brickwork. You can find it in most hardware stores. It is also the same acid your stomach uses to break your food down.

    Ohhh wow! THANK YOU! I have been searching for YEARS how to polish shells, what to use, and how to use it. Thank you for filling in the blanks so that I can learn more about polishing!! Know I know that I CAN polish shells, they DO look beautiful under that top layer, I can use my dremel in water without electrocuting myself and leaving my graestone saying confusing stuff as to how I died, and I know what tip to use AND, most importantly to me: what those tips are called and what each is for. that info is really hard to find. I only ever see lists or a chart and no info on how to use them or what I can use them on. I am so very grateful. N
    Lastly, holy wow this video is captivating! It's like watching those satisfying videos!

    It has been a long time since I've worked any shell, but I think you can hit it lightly on a muslin buff and get a more glossy finish, I don't remember which color rouge I used on the buff though. You do have to be careful so you don't burn the shell. Nice video.

    Liz, how yu doing, I'm from Australia mate, and I had a coral business many years ago, If I can give you some advice about your shell work, all the work your doing I can do in 20 mins, How you say..? hydrochloric acid and water, the acid takes off all the calcification on the shell without loosing to much of the shell that you want to work with, there is a method to it, you don't just dump the shell into the acid and water mix, you brush or sponge it on, hope this helps.

      Hi 9brandt9, A 1200 to 3000 grit wet and dry sandpaper will give a high gloss polish. If you have a rotary tool/dremel, ceruim oxide compound and Wool Wheel Polishing Buffer will also do the trick. Cheers, Liz

    Thank you for the video. You are very skilled. It’s a shame your abalone shells are so pale in colours.
    Our abalone (Pāua) here in New Zealand are very rich in colour. Deep blues, greens and pinks.
    I love picking up pieces of pāua on my walks along the beach. The shells standout and glisten in the sand, and water.
    Most times the sea has already cleaned, ground and polished them for me. I’m also a keen sea glass collector.

    Heyy Liz !! Loved the video !!
    It'd be good if you could provide USE of tool for the shell process, for example use of rotary tool in this process, why is metal file or wire brush used. That would be great!! And are these the only tools used? what about giving the shells a shine? how do you do that?
    It'll be really great if you could answer these doubts since I'm doing a collage assignment on shell craft.

      Hi jaishree, I am confused as to what you mean as the video shows the whole process from grinding, cutting to polishing/shine of the seashells and what tools are used. Cheers, Liz

    If the rotary tool works directly on mains power, you should be very careful while working near water. I'd recommend buying a dremel with a flexible shaft, that way you can keep away the device, and it's also lighter and easier on your hands. Or check if your brand of rotary tool has a flexible shaft available.

      Thanks for watching Dumitru. I run both types and they are plugged into an earth leakage box. I certainly agree with you that one needs to be careful when working with power tools near water. All the best, Liz

    Does this work with mussel shells(specifically California mussel shells?) They are thinner and more fragile, but I haven't found any information on how to keep the sheen without destroying the nacre. The nacre often develops a white powdery layer and I don't know what to do.

      Try dipping/soak it in vinegar to make it shiny. Keep watch and do not leave for a long time. Hope this helps. Cheers, Liz

    Tks for the vid and its really informative and I admire your skill. At the end u mentioned to apply varnish. What kind of varnish? Some article say apply mineral oil or even baby oil. Whats your advise which one is better and which one more lasting like we don't have to do the shinning process for at least a few years. Tks

    • @LizKreate
      @LizKreate  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depends what you're using it for. If it's just to display, clear gloss varnish or even clear nail polish will do. For jewelry, I prefer to just polish them and leave as is with no varnish.

    Just got into shell art, and have only watched a few videos. Most were specifically about technique.
    However, this was the only one that mentioned anything referring to safety. Thank you much!
    ...also I can't find much on how to work with thin shells, like mussels. Anyone have any suggestions?

    do you think I can use oyster shells instead? do they also have this nacre effect?
    Thanks for your videos!

    • @LizKreate
      @LizKreate  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It really depends where the oyster shells are from Silvia. Some have nacre and some don't. It's a matter of finding some with nacre. Thanks for watching. Cheers, Liz

    Hi Liz...can you reccomend a shell for making a crescent moon shape please? I have one earring which is beautiful, in the shape of a moon...but it's only one! I want a pair so thought I might make a matching one or a new pair.

    • @LizKreate
      @LizKreate  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I can't recommend what shell to use as it will depend on the shell that the other earring is made of. If it was me, I'll just make a new pair. :-) Thanks for watching. Cheers, Liz

      Thanks Liz....I think that's the best course of action! It looks Mother of Pearl-ish...with ridges along the moon-shape...is there a shell that you'd guess on?

    Hi Liz! I was wondering what attachment you use on the rotary tool for grinding?

    • @LizKreate
      @LizKreate  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The rotary tool comes with different attachment. For example, cutter grinder, drill and polisher. I use whichever suit the shape/surface of the shell.
