Today we're checking out '[2016 MAMA] BTS - FIRE' a live performance.
BTS (Korean: 방탄소년단; RR: Bangtan Sonyeondan; lit. Bulletproof Boy Scouts), also known as the Bangtan Boys, is a South Korean boy band formed in 2010. The band consists of Jin, Suga, J-Hope, RM, Jimin, V, and Jungkook, who co-write or co-produce much of their material. Originally a hip hop group, they expanded their musical style to incorporate a wide range of genres, while their lyrics have focused on subjects including mental health, the troubles of school-age youth and coming of age, loss, the journey towards self-love, individualism, and the consequences of fame and recognition. Their discography and adjacent work has also referenced literature, philosophy and psychology, and includes an alternate universe storyline.
BTS debuted in 2013 under Big Hit Entertainment with the single album 2 Cool 4 Skool. BTS released their first Korean and Japanese-language studio albums, Dark & Wild and Wake Up respectively, in 2014. The group's second Korean studio album, Wings (2016), was their first to sell one million copies in South Korea. By 2017, BTS had crossed into the global music market and led the Korean Wave into the United States, becoming the first Korean ensemble to receive a Gold certification from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for their single "Mic Drop", as well as the first act from South Korea to top the Billboard 200 with their studio album Love Yourself: Tear (2018). In 2020, BTS became one of the few groups since the Beatles (in 1966-1968) to chart four US number-one albums in less than two years, with Love Yourself: Answer (2018) becoming the first Korean album certified Platinum by the RIAA; in the same year, they also became the first all-South Korean act to reach number one on both the Billboard Hot 100 and Billboard Global 200 with their Grammy-nominated single "Dynamite". Follow-up releases "Savage Love", "Life Goes On", "Butter", and "Permission to Dance" made them the fastest act to earn four US number-one singles since Justin Timberlake in 2006.
As of 2023, BTS is the best-selling artist in South Korean history according to the Circle Chart, having sold in excess of 40 million albums.[2] Their studio album Map of the Soul: 7 (2020) is the third best-selling album of all time in South Korea, as well as the first in the country to surpass both four and five million registered sales. They are the first non-English-speaking and Asian act to sell out concerts at Wembley Stadium and the Rose Bowl (Love Yourself World Tour, 2019), and were named the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry's (IFPI) Global Recording Artist of the Year for both 2020 and 2021. The group's accolades include multiple American Music Awards, Billboard Music Awards, Golden Disc Awards, and nominations for five Grammy Awards. Outside of music, they have addressed three sessions of the United Nations General Assembly and partnered with UNICEF in 2017 to establish the Love Myself anti-violence campaign. Featured on Time's international cover as "Next Generation Leaders" and dubbed the "Princes of Pop", BTS has also appeared on Time's lists of the 25 most influential people on the internet (2017-2019) and the 100 most influential people in the world (2019), and in 2018 became the youngest recipients of the South Korean Order of Cultural Merit for their contributions in spreading the Korean culture and language.
On June 14, 2022, the group announced a scheduled pause in group activities to enable the members to complete their mandatory South Korean military service, with a reunion planned for 2025. Jin, the oldest member, enlisted on December 13, 2022, followed by J-Hope on April 18, 2023, and Suga on September 22, 2023.

And the lights that come down before each solo performance make a star constellation, the Corona Borealis, seven stars (for 7 BTS members) that make up the distinctive crown-shaped pattern. In Greek mythology, Corona Borealis was linked to the legend of Theseus and the minotaur. It was generally considered to represent a crown given by Dionysus to Ariadne, the daughter of Minos of Crete, after she had been abandoned by the Athenian prince Theseus. When she wore the crown at her marriage to Dionysus, he placed it in the heavens to commemorate their wedding.

I think you would enjoy this more if you knew the songs being performed first though.
This was only one song from their set at MAMA 2016. Jimin and J-Hope first performed Boy meets Evil and then the whole group performed Blood Sweat and Tears. The beginning pf this video with V and Jin on their knees was the ending of Blood Sweat and Tears. This is why they were all sweating so much when performing Fire. They also won Artist of the Year at this award ceremony 💜💜💜💜

BTS was also the first non Big 3 group to win Artist of the year daesang at a Korean award show in 2016, they truly paved the way💜💜

They practice singing/rapping while running on a treadmill, they practice dancing in a taped box on the floor to simulate a small stage so they don't bump into each other and stay in sync, they live together so their personalities mesh, Bighit spared no expence to make BTS shine, they've worked hard for everything they have and they deserve it
Well, actually, they all have their own homes now. But the homes are very close to each other, and they did live together, in the various dorms and apartments, from about 2010 to around 2018 or 2019. RM gave us a tour of his house, and Jimin and JK have done lives in their own homes. I think J-Hope also showed us around his home a bit when he was packing up to go to Lollapalooza. The 'Life Goes On' mv was filmed in their last shared apartment, and the 2022 Festa Lunch, where they announced their solo era, was filmed there as well. Because the lease was expiring.

I can see you've got confuse when V was deep into his character in the end part of Blood Sweat and Tears (BST). In this MAMA, BTS performed 3 songs:
- Boy Meet Evil (jhope and Jimin dance)
- Blood Sweat & Tears
- Fire
I recommend you to watch the MV of Blood, Sweat & tears then watch the explanation by Don't worry I'm not Afraid to understand the song and the act by Jin and V at the end (why V has a scar at his back and close Jin's eyes).
For most people including me, It was hard to understand the meaning of BST but after watching the explanation, I can see a lot of meaning and all the set and the act in the MV makes a lot of sense.

After that, you can watch the full MAMA 2016 again.

Another suggestion is the 2021 Festa Room Live, which would give you a taste of a number of their songs (7 I believe). It’s a cool performance and a firm ARMY favourite. 💜
Lyrics aren't essential for enjoying the music but with BTS their lyrics are deep and multi-layered with few exceptions. So subtitles are essential to fully understand their music and why they're so popular. 😊
Their leap to receiving big awards started in 2016, only three years after their debut. Even they were surprised to reach their group dream so soon. Love Fire.
All of their performances are out of this world - but MMA 2019 you can’t beat this performance - your eyes will pop out!!💜💜
If you want to check out their music videos, I recommend 'ON (Kinetic Manifesto Film).' It's definitely one of the songs that most ARMYs recommend to those who are just getting into BTS : ) You can experience amazing choreography, a dope beat drop, and nice lyrics! However if you're interested in their live performances, I suggest watching the 2018 MMA (Melon Music Awards).
While the 2019 MMA was the best-ever epic performance, it might feel a bit early for newcomers😅The 2018 MMA is also considered one of their legendary performances, and I recommend starting from there in order. (MMA and MAMA are both music award shows in Korea. The names are similar, so it's easy to get confused, but they are different events.) Appreciating you guys for listening to their music without prejudice 💜💜

Check this live medley out… its energy is incredible: Dope, Baepsae, Fire, Run…
So this was part of a longer sequence with a narrative: It started with an epic intro with JK dangling from the ceiling of the arena, then Jimin and j-hope doing a dance sequence together. Then all of them performed Blood, Sweat and Tears. This video starts with the transition from that previous song (the sexy angel with the missing wings...). All of this is based on BTS' 2016 album WINGS, which is very heavy on literaure references and hidden meanings. (The MAMA editors did a very bad job when chopping the performance up for TH-cam...)
j-hope is the soul and spirit in ALL performances. j-hope is truly out of this world on stage
wait til you get to 2019 MMA Performance, it will knock your heads out coz that is one EPIC performance.. even if you check their debut performance you’ll see the fire in their eyes (also the eyeliner 😅) but they always perform at their best. they never give a meh performance.

And I know tons of people are probably recommending MMA 2019 award show performance, but I strongly recommend not rushing into it. Check out all the songs on the set list individually first. A lot of meaning behind the performance is lost if you don't. They put a lot of thought into it, so I find it most satisfying when reactors take the time to go through the set list individually first. People are always too eager to rush reactors into MMA, which doesn't do the performance justice for how much effort they put into it. So far, I know of only one reactor Anthony Ray who took the time to go through all the songs individually first, and his reaction to MMA has been the best I've ever seen. As a general rule, he usually doesn't watch any live performances until he's heard the studio version first, either the music vid or a lyric vid. I like that a lot.
I also would strongly recommend doing their MMA 2018 performance first before doing 2019. It's also really really good, but shorter so it helps to kind of ease yourself into 2019. The set list for MMA 2018 is:

I’m 52 years old and have seen many artists live. I’ve seen BTS live 4 times. They are by FAR the most amazing performers ever.
This perf always has a special place in my heart coz it's the 1st BTS performance an an award show with other kpop artists that they really outshine everyone else.. THIS was it.. before that they always have to share the stage with other grp, or were not given enough budget or the camera work was shoddy or the crowd wasn't there for them..but this perf really announced to the world the arrival of BTS..
i think since this performance, the crowd always can't help but lose themselves whenever BTS is on stage.. even if they claimed they're not BTS fans (i met a few of these ppl *snorts*).. i would always find these ppl jamming the hardest during BTS perf lol 😂

Bts always show out at award shows 🔥. Their performances are big productions everywhere they go tbh.

BTS don't just make music they create works of art that no other can emulate no matter how hard they try. Nothing BTS do is ever coincidental either there's always a common thread to link each era, Jin usually plays the part of a fictional character that runs through much of their work. I'm 59 years old and UK army. I have to say that I've seen many groups come and go but none like BTS. I can't express enough how much I admire and respect them, they went through unimaginable things that no one should have to endure. They were mocked, mistreated, disrespected but they had steely determination and made it to where the are now. Companies are always saying they will find the next BTS, they won't succeed though because BTS are a perfect storm of 7 individually talented men who together are unstoppable. They are my light. They say BTS finds you when you need them and I certainly think that's true. My 7 angels who I defend from their ill intentioned and ignorant haters.
This was the year they won Artist of the Year for the first time...Also the first time a group not in the big 3 companies to won

Their award shows beat anything you can imagine. Check out 2018 at the MAMAS. First its great but the upped the anti for the next year. So if you watch them in order you will not astounded by each.

Just giving my feedback - it would nice if reactors watched the music vid and dance practice video, and then a live performance afterwards for a song! Then you get a whole package. Of course, you can do it however you like, just letting you know what would be more satisfying to me as a viewer. This performance of Fire was only one song from their performance at an award show called MAMA 2016, if you watch their whole MAMA 2016 performance it's much more impressive and satisfying.

This is one of many examples of BTS turning awards shows into their own concert. They never give a lazy performance. They just care too much about their art.
9:30 There’s actually a good number of ARMY that are into heavier music! For example, I got into bts in 2017 and at that time, the other artist I was listening to the most was Marilyn Manson. Another artist I love (probably 2nd to bts now) is System of a Down. People might think they’re totally different but what got me into bts was the theatrics of their performance, which is something metal/alternative groups are known for. I then got into the songs themselves and came to appreciate various styles of music more people of them. Hell, my grandma loves bts performances and she has KISS and AC/DC discs in her glovebox still. She might not be in as deep as I am but that’s proof that bts really brings people from all different music backgrounds together to admire their mastery of their work.

@@thesoundcheck666 One of my fave performances by them was their opener for their Yet to Come in Busan concert! It was actually a free concert that 50,000 people attended in person (50 million viewers live online). For some context, it had been BTS’s dream for a long time to give a free concert like this for their fans. It was almost 2 hours long and took place in October 2022 right before they announced that the members would be enlisting for mandatory military service (Jin was the first member to go and went in December 2022). They performed Mic Drop and Run BTS (not to be confused with their song just called “Run” or their own variety show called “Run BTS!”). It’s a “BTS Focus” which means the camera stays on the members and doesn’t pan out to the crowd or show the whole big stage. I like it since it’s easier to see their dance this way. Hope you enjoy! 😁🫰🏻

Watch their 2014 full MAMA (MNET Asian Music Awards) live performance. This was to their first award show live performance after their June 2013 debut! BTS has been on point with their synchronized choreography since day one!
BTS performance at MAMA became longer and more elaborate as other nominated artists refused to perform after finding out BTS was going to perform. Because time was allotted for performances, MAMA asked if BTS would expand their performances; of course they never turned down the opportunity to perform their songs live. Also after the 2018 performance, their light bombs carried by Army (BTS fanbase) were banned, lest it look like a BTS concert!!! 😂😂😂😂
Also MMA (Melon Music Awards) also hosted expanded BTS live performances every year, as well.

Cool reaction. They can do so much and fit into any genre and image that you’ll soon see that it’s refreshing. You have found this generations entertainers. Actual people who have made it their profession to be entertainers (singing rapping dancing, stage performing, fitting their costumes makeup and image for each display, giving the proper energy and emotion for each song and lyric). Finally, right?

It's great that you said you don't mind the lyrics being in Korean instead of complaining about them not being in English as so many Western reactors do. And to be honest, it's a lot to take in when you're trying to read the lyrics and watch an MV/performance at the same time.
There is also the fact that many performances and even some MV's do not have English subs. Many BTS songs do not have an MV at all, but as you can see their live performances are so iconic that it really doesn't matter. Also, there can be several different live performances of the same song, there are 30 different performances of Dynamite alone including the Late Late Show with Jimmy Kimmel.
Having said all that, both the MV's & the lyrics are an integral part of BTS' art and Army love long videos, so what I would recommend is the following:
MV/dance practice/live performance or
Lyric video/dance practice, live performance.
You may also need an explanation video for songs such as Ugh! or Ddaeng! as it is totally impossible for a non Korean person to fully grasp the depth of meaning contained within these songs without them.
I always say that BTS do not create songs, they create experiences. 💜

Live BTS is the best BTS. One of my favourite performances is their Ugh one during the pandemic, so no audience but they still kill it and bring so much energy. Their MMA 2019 performance is epic. (MMA = Melon Music Awards, is a big Korean music industry awards show.)
Don’t know how much you know about the kpop industry, but kids audition for these entertainment companies, and if they get in, they train, usually for years, before they debut in a group.
BTS debuted in 2013, but the earliest members joined Bighit Entertainment as trainees in 2010. The latest member is Jimin, who joined in 2012 and had only 6 months training before BTS’ debut.
What is awesome about any korean live show is the audiences shut up so one can actually hear the group and enjoy the performance! Love it 👍 wish it would happen here at North American concerts
One of the biggest reasons why BTS are so loved is that they NEVER dial in a performance, whether they are sick, have a shorter rehearsal time, are performing on a tiny stage for a tv show, or performing for free. There was even a big fight between Tae and Jin before one performance.
They give it their all everytime, and there are plenty of 'BTS tired & exhausted' videos on TH-cam which show us the price they pay for that level of performance.
With regard to attention to detail and production values, this is something that is inherent in the K-pop industry but again BTS has taken this to another level. I believe that the fact that PD Bang has a degree in Aesthetics has a lot to do with this.
Even though BigHit had very humble beginnings, they still made the most of what little resources they had and we could see that right from the start.
What gets me is that this wasn't even their concert-- this is an awards show! But listen to the crowd, and watch their reactions. Even the other idols are just in awe.
Hello guys, thanks for your good vibes. I recommend SUCHWITA's first program, SUGA and RM talk about music, musical production, their lyrics, the length of their songs. It's illuminating to hear them talk about their creative process, plus they ran out of whiskey😁 BTS is amazin!!!💜
This really was an amazing performance but it's even more impressive because, even though you see them at high energy here, it wasn't the only song they performed. They had a grand dramatic intro with Jungkook then they had Jimin and J-Hope perform 'Boy Meets Evil' (a J-Hope solo song under BTS's album) and 'Lie' (a Jimin solo song under BTS's album) almost like a duet plus solos mixed. Then those two fell into line with the group and they immediately started performing 'Blood Sweat & Tears'. The very ending of that song is what you saw in the start of this video with Jin and V recreating a part of the MV. It was A Whole Production. They really were showing a high competency level for such a young group that didn't have a particularly long training period and where their final trainees were starting as beginners in many different aspects at once. I'm so proud of how well they'd been doing even back then and in their rookie days. Of course they shine brightly now with even more time to work on their craft.

There's so much more but this is just a tiny tiny handful of personal/fan faves. These are all group songs but there are some great subunit performances too (eg. vocal line, rap line). They have some stong solo performances as well and some switcheroo performances where a memeber or members sing a song that's either not theirs or the swap roles (rappers sing or singers rap). Those are fun too since they're not taking themselves too seriously and it's just for the vibes.
Oh and as for more long form documentaries, I'd suggest 'The Rise of Bangtan'. You can find it on TH-cam. It's fanmade but incredibly well done. It's broken up into chapters so it's perfect if you have an empty time slot each week that you want to fill with a 20-30mins video. There are about 21 chapters in total (plus bonus and deleted scenes videos for some chapters). ARMYs have a soft spot for that docu-series so we'll definitely tune in if you're worried that we wouldn't watch something that long.

Oooh.. The full MMA performances from 2016 to 2019 are amazing!! Every time you thought they wouldn't be able to top to the performance from the year before, THEY DID! I'm sure you'll be getting into all the individual songs (with closer look at the lyrics) at some point as well, but just from a production, artistry and stage presense perspective, the show performances are all worth watching. (Chronologically in my opinion)
SHOW MAMA and MMA 2019 is AMAZING
Live performances are always a win with them LOL. They have had hip hop as a part of their core from the very beginning so the purely pop isn't really their focus and is often the first thing newer reactors find first so they are usually surprised to find the more hype or harder tracks. It's ok. Yes, more than 300 tracks in their discography so plenty to dive in to. Enjoy!

I really enjoy watching rock-leaning folks lean into BTS, because that's the world I came from as well. There's that perception from the term "K-Pop" that all of BTS's music must be like Dynamite, but I was absolutely shocked to find out how hard they can go. A few recommendations from my rock-loving heart: J-Hope's solo songs More and Arson, Suga's solo stuff under his Agust D alter-ego, especially the songs Daechwita and Amygdala, Jimin's solo song Set Me Free, and the BTS songs Dionysus, ON (make sure it's the "Kinetic Manifesto Film" if you watch), and Fake Love. This is just a tiny sample of what they can do, but a great place to start. Thank you for your reactions, I hope you're enjoying falling down the rabbit hole. You'll be full fledged ARMY soon enough, my friends 😉
You only saw a part of the performance. They already performed Blood, Sweat and Tears. You should watch the entire performance. They sing and dance multiple songs live. Their stages are legendary. Their 2019 MMA performance is mega that lasts well over 30 minutes.
Jimin and Jhope dance intro for this award show is epic! I wish you watch that too and they also perform Blood, Sweat and Tears before Fire. Actually, all of their MAMA and MMA award show performances for each year are always extra and worth watching but my personal favorites are MAMA 2014, MMA 2016 and MMA 2018 and MMA 2019. Btw, to avoid confusion, MAMA and MMA are two different award shows.

Trust me, you'll be blown away.
One night back in 2017, I ran across this video. I had never seen a group this talented before. You must understand that that the videos of that time, were hot girls, twerking around a pool, guys with gold chains and champagne was flowing. Video after video, it was monotonous! To see this talent, blew my mind. You have to see them in Concert! All concerts are great but BTS puts on a spectacular. It's incredible! You have to see them.
I know their music transcends language, but you should also know they are famous for the depth of their lyricism. Not only do they often speak on really important subjects that are rare in their industry, like mental health, socio-economic and political issues, self love, grief, loneliness and alienation, social commentary on S Korean society, etc, but they also tell very personal stories about their own lives, as well as have secondary stories/meanings in the same songs which are part of the Bangtan Universe (BU) a supernatural fictional mystery storyline running through their albums with clues that unfold in song lyrics, MVs, album notes, short films, webtoons, their mobile game BTS World, books and other media. So their lyrics are often important.
This song is not so lyrically heavy, however it does have a deeper meaning. It sounds like a party anthem in the lyrics, but really it is speaking to the youth in S Korea (and everywhere really) who are pushed so heavily to succeed at the expense of their youth and their sanity. The message is that it's ok to cut loose sometimes and live with passion, make mistakes and move on. What Yoongi/Suga (long red jacket and dark hair) says at the end is "I'll forgive you" which is I will forgive you in advance for making mistakes in your burning youth.
This was the first time a group from a small company won Artist off the year, and also best dancegroup

This is a whole set they did at that award show and this is the end part show they put on. These people in the audience we sure where members of another group attending the award show. This was the end of their set.

into Blood Sweat and Tears which you saw the very end of from where V is on stage with Jin. then you see the back up dancers in their brown robes as BTS run under the stage to get in place to come up further upstage (more into the audience) with the introduction to Fire.
Check the IDOL-2018 MMA, BTS showed the Korean traditional music and dance. Jimin got even an award of Appreciation.

Just wait until you see the 2018 and 2019 MMA award shows--especially the 2019 MMA award show. Jaw dropping. Worth the 37 minutes of your time. Also the rap line outro tear at wembley is one of my faves. (Note: MAMA awards are also good but my recommendations are for the melon music awards-MMA)

Ah, this was the second BTS video I ever watched. It's funny, I watched Dynamite and wondered how they did live, so I picked this Fire performance thinking, 'Dynamite, Fire, we kinda have a theme going here.' Oh, no, not really! I also didn't realize at first that it was an award show; I thought it was a concert. Imagine trying to pull off a stage like this at any US award show!
Oh, and the dance practice of this is insanely good.
People are giving a lot of good suggestions...I'm gonna throw in some more: their older rap and hip-hop stuff like 'Danger', 'N.O.', 'We Are Bulletproof pt 2', 'No More Dream', their debut song. And a kinda collab with MFBTY (My Fans Are Better Than Yours) a rap-hip-hop trio featuring Yoon Mirae, her husband Tiger CJ, and their friend Bizzy. Two of the BTS rappers, Suga and RM, got parts in it, along with two other rappers from other groups. Did you ever watch the rest if the set they did. The start is unreal, Blood Sweat and Tears (this video started with the end of it) was incredible acting and choreo and Fire is just pure hype. If you do, use the channel Enjoy BTS More cis the video is really high quality and she adds Eng subs.
This is nothing, wait till you see their 2018/19 and 2020 Mama performances, the awards shows almost became BTS mini concerts. 💜💜
MAMA and Mnet are awards shows, please check the full performances early days was 7 to 15 minutes on the last ones to BTS were given up to 37 minutes on almost non-stop performance time.
