the drink was Creme de menthe - and the customer "i love books" man - was indeed Mr Linehan making a cameo in his program, something of a trait of his.

Le Vin de Rosier...Well that'll do.
It's like looking into the eye of... a duck
Have you ever seen the brilliant British comedy series 'Spaced' starring Simon Pegg, Jessica Hynes, and Nick Frost?
Believe it or not, Black Books is actually a real book shop called Collinge & Clark on Leigh Street in London. Walking down from St. Pancras station I go past it every time I’m in town. It’s a nice antiquarian bookshop and still looks just like Black Books… just a lot cleaner.
When Manny asks why his parents named him Ludwig, and Bernard gives him a hard stare, so Manny says "never mind". Freeze your screen on the stare, then have a look at a painting of a young Beethoven, remarkable similarity.
Yeah, that joke seemed to go over the audience’s heads. Dylan Moran’s furrowed-eyebrows frown was a dead ringer for Beethoven.
I never noticed that before, but you're right!
It's one of my favorite jokes in the show
Black Books is great especially once you get to know the characters. Can’t believe you guys are fitting in these videos in between baby sleeps. I’ve got 2 boys (now 13 and 10). When they were babies I felt like I never got the time to make it all the way through an episode of my favourite shows. Love the videos though. I don’t know you guys at all and you don’t know me, but you get that feeling of just sitting around watching your favourite shows with some friends, so thanks for the entertainment.
Yes, it WAS Graham wanting to buy a book... 😂😂😂 👍👍👍
You guys have GOTTA watch British Sitcom "Coupling", Queen Boomer will love it too. It's described as the British version of "Friends" but imo opinion that's a cop-out description. It's about a group of friends in London and their relationships... but it's brilliantly written and hilarious!! Hopefully others will or have suggested it already.
Is it any good? I can't actually remember but I'm sceptical.
@@eadweard. Well, I am suggesting it, lol. I might have a biased response to that question!!! Yes, it's brilliant. First episode it goes straight in with great laughs.
@@eadweard. IMO it's top tier cringe comedy.
The bit with the kebab.... 😂
Shadayim.
''creme de menthe'' mint flavoured alcohol.
it's bloody horrible 🤣
@@laineydaveya shot of that with Baileys floated on top is called a “shit on the grass”… I kid you not.

It's used more for cocktails like Grasshopper etc
The customer who shouted at Manny was the doctor in Jam
Wow I had no idea!
Just a shame so much was cut from the episode before this bit.
Love the customer shouting, I have the entire rant memorised.
My favourite bit of the episode, and most relatable
You and the Queen need to watch Cunk On Britain together. The first season is on TH-cam if you search it..!
Bill Bailey is incredible one of those people who can turn his hand to any musical instrument , he won Strictly come Dancing ( Dancing with the stars to you ) and he's appeared on numerous panel shows with quick wit and comedy . I'm liking this one better than the first , very much in the Father Ted mould .
That was a cameo by Graham Linehan and also a cameo in the flashback of the night before in the pun, sitting at the bar was Bill Nighy.
You need to watch Derry Girls, the accents might be a problem but give it a try
At some point you should check out Dylan Moran's stand up - his stage persona is quite similar to his Bernard character. :D
He's a bit of a prick IRL
You’ve started watching the funniest series ever. It gets better and better. “The Grapes of Wrath” is utter genius and our now grown up children still repeat scenes to this day.
Toast! Jam, jam, jam!
Creme du menthe. It's the mixer in a mint julep and other cocktails using mint flavours.
My mum made a load of it when I was at school. She never worked out why it slowly started tasting like mouthwash 😅
My mum is French ,
Anything that is créme is alcohol, syrop is , well syrup.. in France you can get either,
We have always had syrop de menthe in the cupboard, which is to me a mouthwash substitute,
I also I remember a cousin's wedding where there was a cocktail called, La grenouille, créme de menthe and gawd knows what else..
I was peeing green the day after, messy messy times 😂🎉😂
@@catshez I think your cousin prepared you a "green fairy". I hoped you were able to regain consciousness.
@@BunyipToldMe Green Fairy or the Frog 😅 Either way 🤣.. some magical things happened that night.
Consciousness was regained until after a bbq brunch when old Papi's wine came out 🤢 3 hours before flight back to Uk..
Papi's rocket fuel made me forget the frog and any magic that was before 😆
@@BunyipToldMe Hey, are you an Aussie?..
Grapes of Wrath is my favourite I think. Looking forwards to that!
You guys live in Florida.
Not a huge demand for knowledge in Florida.
Outside of Florida, there are still a lot of bookstores.
Whilst you're busy sneering... half the US is moving to Florida to escape the lunacy elsewhere.
@@rescyn1190 Good of you to prove his point for him :)
@@saucyjack6387 That's a particularly stupid comment. Well done you.
@@rescyn1190Nah, he was definitely on the money.
This show isn't really a Graham Linehan show. He was involved in the production and a bit of writing for season one but this is mainly Dylan Moran's baby. Linehan just helped adapt it from stage to television.
So glad youre watching this series!
"There's something... attractive about him, to me." 😂 Haha! Queen Boomer and I should be friends!
Also, I have to recommend some more excellent British comedy: 'Spaced', 'Green Wing', 'Brass Eye' and the film 'Four Lions'. They are incredible and you will see a few familiar faces throughout them. Thanks for the laughs your majesties!👑
Happy Birthday to Bret Clement, who is 35 today. Happy birthday cobber
And are the other drinks for your mates? Because if they are I'm not serving them unless they have ID too.
When I went to Norwich I found a bookstore that legit looked like Black Books on the inside, though even more chaotic with a pile of books 5ft high up against the edge of one bookshelf.
Unlike Black Books the owner is actually nice though.
Well
I waited
and waited
and did some more waiting
until Shouty Man appeared
then I lost it at your reactions to Shouty Man (and finished the most excellent reaction
I love the little second hand bookstores. I was in one in Helsinki recently, and someone was asking the bookstore guy general stuff, like how it is now for stores like that. Bookstore guy said a few decades ago there were 70 of them in Helsinki, and now there's 15. Anyway, big fan of this show.
YOU MUST check out Bill Bailey's stand-up
Linehan said Moran was so difficult to work with,he would not work with him again
Moran just never broke character even after the cameras stopped recording...
I mean he did, though.
Trust two Irish guys to fall out with each other
proper rabdom show suggestion
murder in successville , it has the big guy from plebs in it hes essentially the main character and during the show they have lookalikes such as gordan ramsey as a cop along the main cast but every episode theres a different celebrity guest that is a trainee cop to work with the main guy but they have no script so they break and laugh during the scenes alot i find it hilarious some episodes are on youtube but there all on netflix 3 seasons 6 eps each
Bernard black is also the guy you hated in shaun of the dead ...actors name is Dylan Moran.
Right I'm leaving and then gets his guts ripped out ! That was a real shock the first time I saw that !

After black books you need to line up "Green Wing". Right up your street.
Really love that you gave this show a chance , I've been requesting it for ages. The show just keeps getting better with all the adventures they get up too 😄
Bernard Black proprietor and name sake of establishment Manny Blanco ex accountant and new employee at Black books and Fran katzenjammer (spelling might be a bit off ) friend to Bernard and sympathetic ear to Manny
The customer that shouted at Manny was the same actor (David Cann) that played the Doctor from the "Jam Doctor" video you recently reacted to :-)
In Kevin Eldon’s show he played a man who found a sticky sandwich under a park bench. Weird and hilarious performance.
The guy with the ‘I love books’ T-shirt was the writer of Black Books, Father Ted etc.
The Beethoven crazed look is great haha
I worked for someone just like Bernard Black. He was the proprietor of the shop, hated his job and dealing with people. Was quite bad tempered and hot headed. However he was nice enough and a good laugh at the pub. He would ring me up if he was at a loose end snd we would go for a couple of beers and we would have a blast.
Dylan Mora did most of the writing of this show.
Graham Linehan is not the creator of this show, Dylan Moran was. He was only a writer for the first series, but not for the second or third.
I loved Black Books. Crazy to think it's already 20 years old.
Not funny. Pure bollocks
In Wales there’s a whole town full of bookshops called Hay on Wye. It’s great! It’s famous for it
Sounds confusing to have more than one bookshop with the same name.

Bernard Black was reportedly based on a real insane comic book store owner here in Edinburgh. It’s similar to the Basil Fawlty situation
No more small bookshops because they didn't sell coffee. It's covered in a later episode😂
Hey guys
Just to let you know that my husband Stewart has passed away suddenly only 52,and he was a fan of you used to watch you daily,
So now I will be carrying on watching you ❤
I’m sorry for your loss Stella that’s terrible news.
@KingBoomer thank you it means alot
17:40 is that the doctor from Jam (symptomless coma)??
David Cann indeed
The next episode, Grapes of wrath is hilarious! You'll love it
Tamsin GReig and Mark Heap from "Friday Night Dinners" were in the superb hospital comedy "Green Wing". She also starred with a co-star from Green Wing in the comedy "Episodes".
Bill Bailey's comedy shows are fantastic. You should check some out like part troll.
If I remember correctly, the next episode - with the bag snatcher - is a banger.
Creme de menthe Basically mint alcohol. Horrible stuff.
A good indication of how old this tv show is now, the mobile he pulled out was a Nokia 5110 (which was the precurser to the 3310) only real difference was it had the little antenna..
I love how you love our comedy, you’re watching some half decent stuff too. May I recommend anything written by Chris Morris (Mr Reynholm-IT Crowd). Also Nathan Barley . You MUST check this . .
I can’t wait for the episode when they drink all the wine. Funniest shit ever!
I can't possibly be the first to suggest this, but if you haven't yet checked out GREEN WING, a British comedy series based within the UK's Narional Health Service, I highly recommend it. There were three series, I think, first aired in the late 2010's. It's clever and a little surreal, with superb scripting, excentric characters and comedic acting at the level found in Black Books and The I.T. Crowd. Its one of my all time favourite shows.
Both Dylan Moran's & Bill Bailey's stand-up specials - of which there are no end available online - are well worth a look. Tamsin Greig - Fran - said it was difficult to hold it together on set working with two full-on natural comedians. Bill Bailey is fast approaching national treasure status here in the UK.
If you like these kind of comedy series i imagine you would like Green Wing as well! It's with Tamsin Greig and Mark Heap.
Another good comedy series is The Vicar of Dibley with Dawn French!
I guess you must have watched this before you watched that clip from JAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAM, otherwise you definitely would have recognised the Doctor with the thick club of pulsing gristle.
You need to watch "Episodes" there were five series starring Stephen Mangan and Tamsin Greig(Jackie from Friday night dinner) and Matt LeBlanc.
Whoa! Reactions to Black Books?! May I also recommend Spaced? Seriously, there’s no reactions to this show. This or Welcome To Wrexham or a lot of other stuff that’s great. Instant sub.
OMG , Just remembered a Fantastic British series from Youth called GAME ON. I thought it was hilarious and it’s got that eccentric humour you both like!
Would love to see you react to that!
Queen Boomer looking Hawt today! Thankyou. 0:48 Screenshot !
Mr Boomer, as you like UK comedy please check out Paul Smith, in particular Cancer Man and Police Family. Just one warning - do not attempt to drink anything!
Creme de menthe! How do you guys make Grasshopper cocktails if you don't have Creme de Menthe?
If I remember correctly Linehan has basically no involvement in the show after season one, really showing it was Dylan Moran's creation of the Bernard Black character and his input in writing all the episodes that was the key to the show being great. Linehan was key to formulating and getting the show off the ground at the start
I’d wondered about that! The second and third series never really resonated with me - decent, sure, but nothing like as amazing as the first. The scripts seemed so clunky and unpolished compared to before. Writing and scripting is usually the most subtle and underrated bit of any TV show or movie. And the foundation. Remove a talent like Graham Linehan, and every other bit of the show suffers.
Just you wait KB and QB and babyB, it gets better and better. The customer tirade on Manny is one of my favorite scenes ever...especially with Manny's hair blowing back from the force of the outburst.
I'm with the loud fellow - cheery, chatty service is bothersome. (Another reason to hate tipping culture.)
I've never watched Black Books so I'm enjoying it at the same speed as you two. Looking forward to the rest of the series. When you come to the UK, check out some provincial market towns if you can. They are sometimes full of small, artisan, family owned shops. I know what you mean about the large corporate chain stores you talk about. They just aren't the same and they don't have the same atmosphere or kudos. The older we get the more sanitised everything becomes. The old ways are the best ways!
And I'll say it again, he's definitely more like spence than dan. Do you know what,,I want you to text them and address this between them on ETS21 😂
There is a certain class of people in England who have these shops and they survive everything because the owners are loaded and don’t actually need the money. They’re quite happy just hanging out in their little domain.
there are other better british comedies, that are much better imo, that you should watch with Queen Boomer, imo. I would say this doesnt even come close compared to Blackadder, The Thin Blue line, Bottom, Alan Patridge, Monthy Python, Red Dwarf
You should check out The vicar of Dibley! Awesome Brittish comedy show with Dawn French as the vicar.
Check out Dave Gorman Unchained in America. A British comedian drives coast to coast in the USA without giving any money to ''the man''
I remember a great bookstore. It was really covered in piles of books mostly second hand which you could buy and have stamped and then return them for money off your next purchase. It was really cheap, I have no idea how they made money. They also had an adult only section behind a curtain that sold porn magazines and erotica. Mainly shifty looking men in raincoats looking suspiciously like flashers would turn up and quickly disappear behind the curtain. I can’t imagine a store like it existing now. It had character.
Normally I skip the intro. This time I didn't.
Also, I saw Dylan on stage. He is almost exactly the same.
This series really picks up on episode 3.
Bernard needs someone in his life, he's clearly incapable of taking care of himself, but I wouldn't wish that on anyone!
There is a book shop in Alnwick which is worth a vist, if the Queen wants her Harry Potter fix by visiting Alnwick Castle.
I can’t imagine princess boomer would allow you to not pause it, but I fully recommend bill Bailey ‘part troll’. It’s a stand up gig so you’re looking at 90 mins at least, so that’s why I said you’re likely to have to pause some of it, but it’s one of the best stand up routines I’ve ever seen. I actually don’t like music in stand up usually, but bill is such a talented musician, that it is perfect.
Bill Bailey is a fantastic stand up comedian and musician. You must watch Tamsin in the comedy Green Wing, just brilliant stuff!
Boring show truly ... should of gone with garth maregiss dark place ... hilarious every second or green wing .. this not great imo 😊
Black books and the comedians in the show are just a very different sense of humour from other more mainstream shows, its not for everyone but its very original and funny and it stands out as brilliant if you get it.
Most independent bookstores all sell through Amazon now as there’s just really no competing
Have you watched The Mighty Boosh? 3 seasons of surreal funny business.
UK is the same, go to any town and it is just a clone of every other town mostly. Same shops same crap. Manic Street Preacher wrote a song about it Motorcycle Emptyness...
When I was in Dallas in 1997 there was a small bookstore in the part of town I was staying in, but none downtown, which was crazy.
loads of small bookstores here in the UK, but they are slowly disappearing unfortunately
Crème de menthe is a sweet, mint-flavored alcoholic beverage. It is available commercially in a colorless version and a green version.
Creme de menthe is the green stuff Simon was drinking in The inbetweeners before he threw up on Carli's brother's head. Jay put whisky in it though.
Would love to see you react to the American version of the inbetweeners
Bill Bailey looks like: Hey look, squirrel.
Omg this is so accurate!
The next episode 'The Grapes of Wrath' is one of the best and a popular favourite. Look forward to your reaction.
there used to be local bookstores in my hometown when i was younger. they're all gone now. all that remains is b&n of course. i just get books online now or in thrift stores. but when i buy books online sometimes they're coming from bookstores from other states so they must still exist, just very few of them.
Shouty Customer was the "Sex line doctor" from Jam.
Did you recognize the angry browsing patron as the doctor in Jam?
That thing about big chains vs small bookshops comes up in an episode later in Black Books... hilariously (Simon Pegg guest stars in it, too)
There was a fan theory back when this show was on, that the original idea for the show that started as "what was Father Jack like before he became a priest!"
Bernard is Irish - he probably has more Jesus than anyone else could cope with.
The shouty customer was also the doctor from the Jam doctor sex line sketch.
Why is customer service so lacklustre in the UK...?
