Beautiful on so many levels. (And you vindicated a midrash that has bothered me since I was a child, which pshattingly parroted seems like Rachel's betrayal of Yaakov.)

This teaching brought tears ... Really crushed by the message. We have such great mothers who built the nation in love. Thank you so much Rabbi.. Tisha B'Av is more than just mourning.. our actions to rectify things makes the mourning more effective..

      ARE YOU A JEWESS ?
DO YOU REALLY WANT TO BE ABLE TO BE BILINGUAL IN HEBREW AND IN ENGLISH ?
THEN YOU SHOULD MAKE ALIYA ASAP. THERE ARE MANY PEOPLE HERE WHO WILL BE VERY HAPPY TO HELP YOU. IF YOU WANT A JEWISH HUSBAND HERE IN THE HOLY LAND , THEN G-D HAS ALREADY DETERMINED THAT THERE IS SOMEONE HERE IN THE PROMISED LAND WHO IS WAITING FOR YOU , IRENE DEL.
      BE WELL.

This is absolutely beautiful... We need to have this ahavat 'hinam that Ra'hel Imenou had for her sister, and to rectify the wrong mourning of our ancestors on the night of the evil report of the spies by mourning for the right thing this time!

You took us into this beautiful and step by step, in depth journey to understand meaning of these verses. Thank you so much! Kol Hakavod!

Thank you .. Sages adding to the story gives their interpretation wonderfully ..
I seen as Jacob deceived His Father, in turn, he was deceived ...
    "Reap what you sow"
    And Rachel being childless ..
Was restored by receiving the "flowers for a Mother" ..
Only a True Mother would desire and cherish such a gift ..
One that Leah didn't care about ..
Her focus was on Jacob and what she gave him (male children) ..
Rachel's focus was on God and becoming a mother ..
    No matter who gave birth,
This includes her being a Mother to Leah's children too ..
    Thank you again ..
    Lot's to ponder 🛐🕊😇

    דודאים comes from Dodi
My Beloved, either a Love plant or a fertility plant. Duda'im were either a Love plant (to make a love potion) or a fertility plant.
The fact probably is that the Duda'im were BOTH THOSE THINGS. Leah coveted the Duda'im to magically become Yaakov's first love while Rachel coveted the Duda'im to become pregnant.

Lovely midrash. Thanks for sharing these deep connections. I do find it interesting that her intercession in heaven on behalf of the exiles is only effective because she chose to take upon herself Leah’s suffering and extend reconciliation, which is the same kind of profile and pattern we see in Isaiah 53.

I'm hoping you really want to learn the Sod level of the Torah. Leah and Rachel are a picture of Adam and Eve and the patterns throughout the book. The Sod level, like it or not,is the New Testament. It is all about the firstborn,or fleshly nature(Adam/Leah who have been given the favor first) verses the second born,or spiritual nature(Eve/Rachael who get the favor last,by choice).Rachael's action was that she laid down her wants for her sister of the fleshly nature but the pattern repeats so the child born in her name was of the fleshly nature as well.

I have a question, I was told Laban was going to give Leah to Esau and decided to come up with the scheme to extend Ya'akob's service by giving Leah first as wife and then Rachel. I was also told that Leah's eyes were so, because she knew of this & cried out in prayer so that she would not marry Esau. I believe by then Esau had two wives and Leah would be the third. I am not making this up only repeating what I was told. Laban, I was told was imitating, mimicking Nimrod. We see later we find that The Most High plainly instructing that a man should not take a sister as a rival. Not trying to circumvent the exposition-miqdash. We should seek to understand another's point of view when we are in conflict and take action to remedy the hurt, the misunderstanding by selfless giving. We all can be a victim of circumstances. Leah was being saved from a raw deal eventhough Rachel thought she got the raw deal at first. 12 is the number to begin a nation. Did not Ishmael have 12 sons? We see later on Rachel died in childbirth after only giving birth to her second child. There are so many layers to this history. I'll end here.

There is no correct translation for Duda’im, in English.
Rather, learn from the Rabbis, who are fluent in Hebrew, who are so passionate about teaching the world, those that have an ear to HEAR 👂

Leah gave birth to both Judah, Levi and other sons. Does she have a story to tell?

Absolutely! But you can only tell one story at a time, right? Plus, there are other angles to see in this beautiful story, other nuances in interpretations and each teaches us something about how to be in our lives.

What do you mean that Leia didn't have a choice ? Doesn't a woman, by definition in Jewish law, have a choice who she marries?

Thank you for putting together this study. I loved it, but disagree on one point. There are no tears in heaven. Rachel must have been crying in Abraham’s bosom or in Sheol, waiting for the Messiah and mourning for her children & for the day of redemption to come, but certainly: she was not crying in heaven.

That's not true - the angels cried out from heaven when Abraham was about to sacrifice Isaac - his beloved son! as he believed it was God's will, & their tears fell on Isaacs face & caused him to eventually go blind in his old age & that's how he was fooled to bless Jacob first even tho Esau was firstborn, as Rebecca suggested he dress himself in Esau's clothing & Jacob felt him...its all in the first of the 5 books of the Torah!

The way that I was told the story, Leah actually didn’t know that yaakov was working to marry Rachel. At first, she thought that even yaakov was meant to marry Rachel, he was choosing Leah instead. The signs were given to her in a way that she didn’t know they were signs, so that she didn’t feel even worse for taking her sisters husband, that her father was using her to exploit yaakov, that yaakov didn’t truly loved her. She was living with yaakov for seven year thinking he married her on purpose. So when yaakov goes and marries Rachel, of course she thinks her sister stole him! She doesn’t know that yaakov didn’t mean to marry her! This adds even more to the wild flowers because she truly believes Rachel is out to steal her life.
