      This is the biggest issue with modern warfare and our current politcal leaders. In the past, when there were kings and queens as leaders, they went to war and their entire families were on the front lines fighting and defending civilians. That entire equation has changed, what we have now is a system where our world leaders never have to put their lives on the line. They sit from afar and press a button and people die. There is a complete imbalance in what war entails and what is risked by those who call for war.

    When Witjawan says Indonesia dealt with multipolarity in a good way, he seems to completely ignore the CIA coup that installed Suharto and wiped out millions of his citizens for supporting neutrality.
    In fact, I don’t think I’ve ever seen him deal with this issue on the show, which makes the constant passive agreement anti-Sino remarks locate his loyalty in Washington rather than Southeast Asia.
    Good interview though. He got Mearsheimer to clearly illustrate the most key points on all of the issues.

    As noted in Haaretz, Netanyahu seems to boast of his knowledge of the US by saying, "I know what America is. America is a thing you can move very easily, move it in the right direction. They won't get in their way."
    He also boasts of manipulating the U.S. in the ongoing peace process, as the Washington Post points out:
    "They asked me before the election if I'd honor [the Oslo accords]," he said. "I said I would, but ... I'm going to interpret the accords in such a way that would allow me to put an end to this galloping forward to the '67 borders. How did we do it? Nobody said what defined military zones were. Defined military zones are security zones; as far as I'm concerned, the entire Jordan Valley is a defined military zone. Go argue."
    America, apparently, is moved by the Israel lobby. Evidence to the contrary has yet to emerge.

      even though I would agree with the "pragmatic" description and not so much "ardent supporter", you got who they are balancing seriously wrong. It isn't with the PRC which literally had its last war in 1979 as Mershimer notes, with Vietnam, plus the Paracels dispute, plus the Spratlys. Vietnam gets no military aid from China, it gets it from Russia, that is who they are balancing.
      It is clear that ardent supporter is an exaggeration since Vietnam has expressed neutrality in Russia's conflict in Ukraine but also refused to condemn the invasion at the UN. But Vietnam has been getting US arms deliveries, most importantly warships

      This is extremely foolish and ignorant of China's history. During the cultural revolution for example, China export its marxist revolutionary teachings to many countries, provide training and arms to native armed groups (thus they are known as maoist revolutionaries), host radio stations within China itself for these maoist forces. For example, the Communist Party of Malaya which fought an insurgency against Malaysia's government has its radio station in hunan China.
      This only come to an end when Mao died and Deng took over. He decide that China should build economic ties instead of export marxist revolution and ordered these forces to step down. And they did.

    Mearsheimer assumes Asia follows the "balance of power" rules of the Westphalian system. But for 1000s of years, China was dominant in the region and no other Asian power sought to "balance" against them, because that was simply unrealistic. The only way there is any "balance" of power in Asia now is if the US is included, but that just creates unnecessary potential for war. So, his analysis of power politics kind of falls apart in that context, or is simply an argument to maintain the US reach.

    • @keyser021
      @keyser021 หลายเดือนก่อน

      A country founded on the principles of the 2nd Amendment and the Monroe Doctrine doesn't get to determine the "balance of power" on the other side of the globe with a country five times its size and equivalent military capabilities. The US doesn't belong there in the first place. Committing mass murder through the use of nuclear weapons on an island nation that was in the throes of defeat rather than waiting for a blockade to seal the deal crowns them kings of evil who forfeit any claim of "belonging" anywhere that's beyond 2,000 miles of their own border. The fact that 4% of global population is deluded to the point that they think they control the other 96% percent of the world could only be reinforced through the fantasy machine of Hollywood where men in pink leather sing about dolls and Scientologists play make believe that the US wins wars. The US is in Asia because they can't build GPUs like the Chinese do in the Republic Of China. Plain and simple.

    • @libertarianbydefault
      @libertarianbydefault หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I am not sure you understand Mersheimer correctly. What do you mean by "balance of power in Asia"? Is there a balance of power in western hemisphere? His point is that China is looking to become a regional hegemon and the US is doing all it can to prevent that from happening. That all fits perfectly with the Professor's theory of offensive realism. The US is trying to balance against China but it is a tall order given the geography and regional balance of power within which China, being on good terms with Russia, feels pretty comfortable. That is why Mearsheimer always says that it was stupid of the US to screw up the relationship with Russia as the latter could have been a major balancing factor against China. Alas, the US chose to make an enemy out of Russia by pursuing its idiotic policies in Europe. China is the main beneficiary of that foolishness.
      Lastly, the statement that China has been the dominant power in the region for 1000 years is simply not true: Japan was a great power until the end of WW2, it more than challenge China. Have you heard of the "Century of Humiliation"?

    • @ninelegyak
      @ninelegyak หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      @@libertarianbydefault Before the Europeans came to Asia (1500s), and even for few centuries after that (until the Opium War), China was the dominant power in Asia. Did other Asian powers (Edo Japan, Korea, Siam, etc) try to "balance" against China during those centuries? No. There's no "balance of power" in the Americas, either, after the US attained dominance. So, what is the point of balancing in Asia? Seems the only point is to keep the US in a central position in the region. But at some point the balancing will prove more dangerous/provocative than protective.

      @@ninelegyak No nation in Asia can effectively balance against China of today (and I shall gladly concede the same for the past long gone), that much is true. The point here is that the US does not want China to be a hegemon so it does all it can to prevent it from happening, that in itself if the "balancing" act. The US DOES have the means of balancing against China, at least to a degree. So the US goes to Asia and gets itself very, very deeply involved with all the nations it can to balance against China. It is apparently not quite enough as China keeps getting stronger (and the US - relatively weaker) hence the call in the US to "pivot towards China", i.e. spend more of everything to double-down on the balancing act. Balance does not mean an immutable status quo, it is a never-ending power struggle between the bigger nations to position them selves - relatively - better than others. At least that is the way I interpret Mearsheimer's theory and it makes plenty of sense to me.

      @@libertarianbydefault The problem with the theory is that it explains why the US is balancing by linking with the security architectures of various Asian nations, but it doesn't really explain why the Asian nations should link with the US if China will be regionally dominant anyway. Consider, what benefit would Mexico get from linking its security to China to balance against the US? None. Such an action only dangerously antagonizes the regionally dominant power, so why do it? There's no threat of the US attacking its neighbors, just like China has no plans to invade anyone (except Taiwan), but it would do so if it felt an outside great power is seriously threatening its sphere, like why Russia invaded Ukraine. Seems like it would be better, even from a realist perspective, for Asian nations to not be overly linked with the US.

    The questions around South China sea are hard for John, as a settlement in South China sea will mark as an end to the US influence in South China sea. So US don't want to see it happens, or even willingly pushing for a conflict.

      Good point. I fully agree with your assessment. I don’t think that china wants a conflict. There are no benefits for them when the whole region is destabilized. It would stop the economic growth. And it would push all the ASEAN incl. Taiwan towards US. Therefore the only hegemon interested in a conflict or destabilization of the region is the US. It aligns perfectly with their containment strategy for china. Furthermore the conflict would be, not surprising, far from american soil.
      So I hope China, ASEAN and Taiwan can somehow find a solution which benefits them and not the US.

      Huge disagree. Letting China do away with settlements will just make the SEA to China as is South America to USA.
      China just can't let the 9 dash line go, and as long as they insist on it, I can never trust China 100% as a SE asian.

    A lot of respect for the professor. What I would like to hear is the consideration of the cultures' influences in the decision making, rather than focusing on how the rest of the non-Western world would make decision based on pure Western thinking. Remember, China would have to govern Taiwan island once they re-unified, which is unlike Israel (who would just go ahead to cleanse), or Russia (who would be happy if Ukraine remains a rump state).

    I think it is necessary to add to the arguement of Prof. John Mearsheimer saying China is unlikely to invade Taiwan. It was only mentioned by Prof. John Mearsheimer when interviewed by Chinese journalists "unless the Taiwanese is foolish enough to declare independence". As Prof. John Mearsheimer said nationalism is the most powerful ideology in the world, Chinese elites will be forced to start the war against becasue of the nationalism.

      The fact is always never mentioned that Taiwan is officially a Chinese province, it would never classed as an invasion. It's written in the Constitution, the same constitution that Taiwan follows is the Chinese constitution, the Republic of China. There is no threat looming, no war needed unless Taiwan declares Independence. Which would never happen because it doesn't makes sense politically or economically. Live and let live. The political reunification needs to be settled by Chinese people on both side of the the Strait.

    Wirjawan didn't go so far to claim that China historically has not been the kind of US-style hegemon, but sort of indicated it with the line that Indonesia has been good with multipolarity. But I see Mearsheimer cannot or will not accept that.
