RCT715 top of the list for purchases for 2023 summer riding. I wish Garmin would also bring out a matching front light. They gave up too soon in the Virb. Really what's needed is more of a security camera like the Fly12Sport than an action camera. Wrong target market imo.
I am glad you mentioned that the RCT715 can be connected to a computer and videos can be downloaded using this method. Other people who gave reviews on the camera harped and complained too much about the phone app, when you can just download the videos via USB cable connected to a PC. I think the light/camera device made by cycliq has about the same quality camera as this Garmin.
Thanks for showing the clarity, or lack thereof of the camera. I was thinking of replacing my Fly6 with this, if this did better shots at night, but since it does worse during the day and there are no night examples, I guess I won't.
The recording time can be lengthened in the app. But by default for incidents, it will record 30 seconds before the incident (in Continuous mode) and 60 seconds after the incident producing a 90 second recording
Honestly I'm just looking for a device that I can have plugged into my phone when I ride so I can see behind me. I'd love get rid of the clip on mirror on my glasses and I thought this might be the real deal. But I haven't seen anyone say that if you've got the app up that besides the radar feature it will show you the current video until the vehicle passes. Any idea or am I just dreaming of something that doesn't exist? When I ride I have my Garmin bike computer and my phone connected to my handle bars.
I have looked into devices that would do that and the issue is the video lag. In your use case, you want something as close to real time as possible. I would say having the radar notification by itself has been extremely helpful for my riding. It doesn’t show you a video of the car, but you will know it’s coming. This one will give you the additional video recording if you ever need to review video footage.
From your review and others, it seems that Garmin still has work to do when it comes to the included camera. For $400, I need image stabilization. What good is footage of a car hitting me going to be if the authorities can't make out details about the car? Also, I'm in Florida and nobody has front license plates, so at best all you're going to get is footage of the color and make of the car. That may prove helpful if the driver doesn't stop, or it may not. I think for now I'm going to buy one of the radar/tail light models and wait for them to improve the camera model.
It will have GPS coordinates embedded in the video and you can share the video clip once you download it. But if you are looking to share your full ride with your coach, a bike computer like a Garmin Edge would be the way to do it.
NO !, they didn't add the peloton mode with this new device, the RTL 515 has it as well !, and you use it on every ride, really ?? do your job, don't be a blogger if you can't check simple stuff like that
Surprised no one has asked, but given you have both this and a 510 (/515?), when going out on your bike do you head out with this massive big doofer thing on the back of your bike? Beauty :is: in the eye of the beholder, but ye gads it’s ugly. I couldn’t guess, if my life depended on it, whether such a monstrosity could be the product of the same design team as the 515, honestly. It does happen that companies have good designers, that the owners fail to grasp the value of the aesthetics, as part of the user’s experience, (as happened in the case of htc, who designed a form that in actuality, was better than apple, to the extent apple ditched the dogmatic argument for a smaller device, espoused by steve jobs, and stole it for themselves (jonny ive, design genius that he is, I’m sure could spill all kindz of beanz on the matter [I’m just as sure that in the event of being challenged on the matter, he’d be “less than forthcoming”, as they say]. What happened to htc smartphones? They became fugly at a great rate of knots, and now they’re history, literally. The designers involved have gone their own way with Gogoro, which is a cool product, and another discussion.) But I smell something similar here, given the overall swollen bloated form of the 715, the weight, the absence of image quality, image stabilisation, commensurate in a product of this price point. There’s an incoherence at play which I pray they root cause, remedy and come back with an implementation such as the concept actually deserves. Conceptually, I need this device, but as others have expressed, the insult to the consumer, manifested in this device, is so outrageous, on multiple levels, I even question whether to part with the cash, despite that we’re talking about safety for life, limb and carbon layup. In good conscience, I have serious misgivings shelling out this amount of greenbacks, for such a pig, versus the altogether much more convincing 515, least ways til they sort out their act, or, dare I say, a competitor (wahoo?) beats them to it, in which case I’d be first in line when it hit the retailers.
I disagree with the ‘lights don’t do … daytime’. First of all, a flashing red light gets attention. All the time. It’s proven that even drunk drivers see the flashing . Second, daylight doesn’t mean bright sun all the time in every spot. I like to ride in forrests in my area; trees cover the road up, a lot of shadow. Again the flashing light will draw attention. Again when it’s cloudy / rainy during the day. Imho a lot to in favour for the radar with light.
@@pointbreak2811 Yes. I use ‘flash’ only and (i have an older 510 unit) it lasts few rides without problems, longer than continuous light. Should be better without any lights, but why would you do that? I never go without light.

Just the quality of the video you have provided has got you a big thumbs up from me!! 👍

Yep, works so much better connecting directly to a pc rather than trying to fiddle with the app. Thanks for watching 🙏🏼
Thank you for doing all these videos, very helpful
Thank you 🙏🏼
Great video @Tariq.
Thanks Todd 🙏🏼
Awesome product review. Thank you!
Thanks for watching 🙏🏼

Love your content and honest reviews brother ✊🏾
Thank you 🙏🏼
Thanks for this I so need this device, but I'm so disappointed with the camera quality. Great review!
Tariq please tell me what the mount at 0:24 is called and where it can be purchased, Thanks
It’s the KOM mount: amzn.to/3GvTieQ

Great review. Can the camera only record 30 second clips? Thanks.

7:54 - The device is unable to perform the only task that is intended for.
The battery run time seems very short for my rides, which are 8+ hours long
Yeah that’s not gonna last you for that long 🤷🏻♂️
@@SmartBikeTrainers Do you know of a motion camera aimed toward the solo long-distance cyclist?

Hi great video. I am looking for a front light with camera is that available?
You can checkout Cycliq. They make front and rear cameras.
Can you use camera without bike computer? When I commute to work I don’t use a bike computer but could do with using the camera on this 👍
You should be able to use it without a bike computer but you won’t be getting the alerts. You can also use it with your phone.
hi sir why my varia rct715 only have 2 mode light low and off only?
Are you using the Varia app or the RCT715 button to switch between modes?

Hello I would like to know if this cámara share my ride with somebody else. Can I send the gps to my coach?

I only need longer battery life for my Varia. It is perfect as it is without a camera. Just give me more battery life.
Pretty typical Garmin. Overpriced, under delivered. Incredible.
WTF is wrong with america here cars aren't required to have a front license plate? lol Nuts!
(thanks for the great review!)

Have you checked the Varia app? And you can switch to peloton mode using a compatible Garmin edge.
Well at least they used a usb-c this time around. Overall lackluster development of a product that’s been around for a while.
Hello
The new mount is a deal breaker. US$40 each. A pain if one has multiple bikes. Camera is low grade.
30fps meh, disappointing. 60fps, to ensure license plate recognition, then a huge thumbs up for me.
Right, would’ve been nice with a higher fps. Thanks for watching 🙏🏼

I like the one with just radar and no lights or camera. Lights don't do anything for you in the daytime and the camera thing is for the paranoid.

it must increase safety or most car manufacturers wouldn't put daytime running lights on their vehicles
Does the radar with lights have better battery life if you don't use the lights? I only have the radar but wish there was more battery life.
