He's got an amazing thought process! and one that should be more widespread. Like, the "If everything is dialed up to a 10, nothing will feel like a 10" is what I find the most interesting cause it's not only something for YT but for everyday life as well
I've been telling people this for awhile now. More cuts doesn't equal a better vid. Sometimes it can be too much. Hillier does such a great job explaining everything perfectly. Not only will Matthew learn tremendously from this, but the rest of us as well! Such a wonderful video!
@@HillierSmith Nominations for best film editing are closely correlated with the Academy Award for Best Picture. PS - I'm in. Heard about your channel from an offhand comment. Keep these reviews up
i love how at 12:44 hayden literally dials the intensity of the video down to a 2 and let’s Beem really work through the concept, thus demonstrating the exact point he’s been making about contrast editing. brilliant stuff.
Brilliant again as always. I’m guilty of using short form methods in my long form editing for sure. Trying to figure out how to get people emotionally engaged in trick shots is tough 😅
THANK YOU for putting it into words. I feel like so many people who copy the mrbeast style of videos can often end up with these same sorts of issues, where I'm not actually emotionally invested in any of it and it all just turns into white noise. Fast cuts =/= more interesting. They ALL need to watch this video.
The value of permission to enhance the storytelling than just solely on optimization is gold. Loved how you compared it to movies. Just like in CreatorNow, your insights give me lightbulb moments. Sportmode Carl
The effort you commit into ACTUALLY creating the examples of better editing have always been a real treat. They shine once again in this video. Great work, very informative, I loved it all!
Oh my goodness, I completely resonated with what Matthew said about not trusting people’s attention span. Seeing how everyone is so focused on short form content and how quick cuts and edits keep retention, it’s become harder for me to feel comfortable with making a video that doesn’t have a ton of things happening all the time. But what Matthew said after is also true, if someone clicked seeing it was X quantity of time long then they’re surely interested enough that if you hook them and keep your video promise that they’ll watch the video through to the end. Great video 💯
This is SO amazing because comprehension really is in the troubleshooting. You can watch a million editing videos but seeing ACTUAL EXAMPLES OF WHY things work (or not) is awesome! Shout out to Beem for being gracious enough to allow us to learn through him & Hillier for sharing his amazing talent with us again. THANK YOU! Super helpful and genuinely interesting.
I can’t tell you ho absolutely valuable these sit downs are. I don’t edit YT but pulling these apart like these trigger all sorts of edit ideas for myself. Thank you.
12:44 This realization that Matthew had means you accomplished something extremely important with this video, Hayden. I’m at a lack of words to express how much TH-cam creators AND strategists need to understand this concept: long form content SHOULDN’T be 10 TikToks edited together, it simply needs to double down on the principles of great storytelling…you are saving TH-cam, one “over-optimized” creator at a time 🙂
Its not just an art form to be able to breakdown and critique someone elses video but make the video of the breakdown itself even more entertaining and keeping me emotionally invested. GD Hayden you're a legend. Can't wait for your course.
I subscribed after watching this vid! Actually, I think I am already subscribed to your other channel which is the editing podcast. I really like educational videos with actual samples, thanks for this! learned a lot more about how to tell a more appealing story through editing :)
*So much to absorb.* You have made me a better TH-camr, but I still have so much more to learn and incorporate. Love how you educate in such a relatable way.
Hiller doing an elegant mic drop here and telling an ENTIRE generation of TH-camrs to STOP doing what they are doing, STOP trying to please the algorithm and STOP doing these unwatchable videos and instead just start telling a freaking good story that makes us CARE. Respect.
So great seeing this side of Matthew! I hope we can see more of it and I’m stoked to watch him grow! Hayden, love the edit on this one! The LICKD segue was world class 🤌
I love how throughout the video you can tell he is really taking in your advice because he starts predicting what you’re going to say. It really shows that he knew what you had to say would really help him in the long run
The fact you can make an editing breakdown actually entertaining just shows how much of a pro he is at this. Cause informative editing videos are usually just so boring
Hillier's advice is so good because it's honest. We have a tendency to hold back when giving feedback to keep from hurting someones feelings but in reality we would be of more help if we were straight forward. Great video, I love these breakdowns!!
i love that you show what it could have been hillier. that is the most educational part for me. i've got pages of notes from you over the past year, but seeing it actually in action is so beneficial to me. great video boss
@@HillierSmith yessir! After getting to chat with you in creator now, I know i'll have made it when I get to sit down with you and you roast my best(worst) video! Cheers mate!
Love the simplicity but yet complexity of how storytelling can be done right and wrong! So nice to see you teaching us so we can get better and make TH-cam a better place to spend time on in general! Also great joke at the end to cut off the video 😂✂
I’m really enjoying these breakdowns and loving the technical definitions to some of the edit styles. I don’t make hyper energetic videos, so you’d think this isn’t very informative to me, yet the way you show how you can increase excitement whilst removing the need to always shout, is exactly what I’m trying (and often struggling) to achieve with my own channel, as someone who is definitely not shouty - thanks!
I really liked your breakdown of David Dobrik's vlog. A lot of things were pointed out that we as viewers won't notice in the editing. I think there's a lot more to talk about his vlog editing, also it's been over a year you made that video, so wanted to ask if you would make more breakdowns for David's vlogs. Not only are this guys' calls on point, but he is excellent at presenting and explaining EXACTLY why they make sense. When he explains it, it seems obvious. You're so articulate it's insane!
The fast cutting to improve retention is something I do now, I am going to need to re-think my approach because often now my main goal is "how can I get information across as quick as possible" instead of considering anything else.
man took the critique very well. I had to learn that as well as a film student sometimes it's hard to accept that you made some mistakes because you put so much effort into it. Respect to him.
At this point... Beem is still enjoying the video. 1:42 These story breakdown videos by Hayden are about my favorite thing on TH-cam! Such amazing teaching, oh to evoke emotion like Mr. Hillier-Smith.
I love your insights into editing and breaking down videos that have this huge potential to be unlocked when edited properly. Even just in the changes that you made here it felt like there was so much more life brought into the video. Another awesome and brutal breakdown, keep it up 👏
Keep these coming please. ❤️ Also, it would be highly entertaining to see you do this same series, but also with super small timer TH-camrs that have potential.
for some reason even though im not an editor, im so intrigued in how you make "TH-cam" videos be an emotional attracting rollercoaster with the use of such variety. im so happy i found your channel where i can use your teqhniques on paper for my english essays on how directors control the audience
Always love learning from you! You have such a wide aspect of how you think and it just simply makes everything about editing and content creation 100% better!!! I can't wait to start content back up and start implementing the key points you talk about. Thank you, Hillier!
It's a huge thing to be able to be open to criticism - especially in person, while reviewing your work, and on a video that's captured in perpetuity no less! Lots of peoples' egos won't allow for this. I hadn't heard of Beem before but he earned my respect being part of this video. I'll be sure to check him out now.
Glad you made a video on him. When i first saw his Mrbeast Squid game video, I was blown away by his editing, but after a couple of months later, now I can't watch him because it's just exhaustingly fast with no real goal or conclusion, and feels over-edited and forced. That's why Ryan Trahan is getting way more views, not because of cutting down the video, but storytelling.
It's taken me a bit before commenting on this video but I must thank you for making this clear because for a while I was optimizing retention by just shortening the videos with J-cuts and Rapid cuts and my audience didn't like that. I just wasn't trusting peoples attention spans like Beem said and this has motivated me to actually optimize my content with storytelling (and storyshowing). This really helped since I took a long break from making content but now I'm back and in progress of making the best content I can in my niche.
Tiktok first rolled out 3 minute videos to a few people. A girl posted a 3 minute video staring at the camera and occasionally said "nothing's going to happen in this video." It got millions of views and tons of comments saying "I just watched this whole thing" or something similar. I watched it all thinking is something going to happen and how long is this going to go? Point being if you get people invested they will stay.
THANK YOU! Media with all these fast cuts and attempts at retention is further fueling an ADHD standard of story telling. We have gotten so used to swiping what's next in an attempt to get hit of dopamine that all context of story is lost. Story is what keeps you coming back for more. I look to TH-camrs like the Neistat brothers for this sort of thing.
