A lot of the movies that get to a billion, don't actually need the China Box Office to get there, so it's more for those movies that maybe need a small boost, like Doctor Strange 2 for example.

Hollywood only gets 25% of the box office from China. So if movies just on the verge of 1 billion were to get a China realease the truth is that they would not truly be making 1 billion, just inflating the numbers

You watched WF and your take away was “a cgi slog fest”!?! That boggles the mind. The treatise on the stages of grief and loss, the costuming, the cinematography, the music, the tributes to Chadwick Bozeman, the spectacular depiction of Black and Latino culture, the historical and political critique on the lengths world superpowers are willing to go to in order to exploit the resources of other countries…
You may not have appreciated these elements but that’s not the same thing as saying they weren’t there. I put before you that Wakanda Forever merits far more respect than that.

I always love to hear Grace's perspective.
I think the MCU Phase 3 made the "billion dollar club" look like child's play. It's not easy.
Not only did we lose Chadwick Boseman, not only are we post-pandemic (which lost a chunk of the theater-going public), not only did it come at the end of a janky phase (No Way Home, Shang Chi being the exceptions), not only is there no tight "bigger narrative" like the Infinity Stones holding this thing together... we don't know the end result yet. Yes, it's underperforming internationally.
What's the second weekend hold? Is there a precedent when the lead hero from the first in conspicuously absent? There's much we have to wait and see on.
I think it'd be a shame if this movie is deemed a "failure" if it makes $800 million domestically. These are different times.
If this is the "rubric" now for underperformance, it's kind of odd that people weren't pointing to something like The Batman (which was allowed in China btw, made $105 million of its box office there) and crying underperformance then.
(*Grace has been one of the few people who did acknowledge The Batman's disappointing box office. It was successful and profitable, just not the slam dunk WB hoped.*)

Well, in these 'different times' NWH is at 6 on the all time, and Maverick is at 11. The next highest movie from 2021 or 2022 is Jurassic World Dominion at 48, and Dr Strange 2 at 57, Minions at 62, and that's all for top 100. Two Chinese movies at 79 and 84.
Wakanda Forever has a budget of $250m, and part of the MCU (which means a built in audience).
NWH made $814m domestic on a budget of $200m with only a few minor MCU cameos.
The Batman did underperform, but it was a reboot and separate from the DCEU, and didn't feature any of the DCEU cast, like Momoa, Cavill, Gadot. And recent DC projects have underperformed in general. Justice League (the most recent Batman movie?) only made $658m on a budget of $300m.

@@mutalemwananshiku4098 I agree. Let me list a few factors for why this film didn't match the original 202 million.
      1. IT DOESN'T Have T'Challa 🤦.
2: The First one came out during BIack history month.
3: The first black panther was closely tied to Infinity war, a very anticipated Avengers movie. This one doesn't have that luxury.
4: Right now in America is election season and it gets very divided here during election season. Very toxic and very divisive.
The fact that this movie had to contain with all of that and still in it's opening box office come to 180 million is freaking impressive. Period.

There are so many variables that doesn't mean the ship is going down.
If people have issues with the current quality of films, that's valid. We got one whole year off from any Marvel content because of Covid and it messed up their release schedule. Contracts have to be honored and they had to push out more than they wanted to in a short period of time.
Also, I know people who have seen all Phase 4 films but haven't watched all phase 4 D+ shows. People can choose what they want to watch, one does not need to consume all of the MCU, it's called audience choice and Feige knows that.
D+ has allowed people to wait until the film is streaming vs running to the theater. Now inflation has curbed people's discretionary spending.
This plays like comic book reading. Not all comic book readers read all of DC or all of Marvel and the general audience won't either. Ant Man started this trend before phase 4 as it made the least amount of money. Why, people either didn't know the character or Marvel fans didn't care for Ant Man. That may change with Quantumania.

Yeah i get the Cgi issues in the first one but otherwise for me it was a perfect film, great pacing, a charismatic lead, a world we have not seen on screen before, with a perfect balance of action and drama, perfect level of emotional lows and highs, interesting suporting cast and a film that was just such fun. The sequel had in credible acting from its leads, i mean for some characters giving an acting masterclass, a very cool villian and origin story (not really a villian but an adversary really) and some beautiful production design. For me though apart from that it was mostly just the opposite of the first one which is such a shame as it felt the good they had created in the first one was mostly undone but it was still entertaining in parts and to this what happens next.

    • @anniehopkins8470
      @anniehopkins8470 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Why was it "very emotional" watching the first Black Panther? It was a fine movie... but I don't recall it hitting any strong emotional chords. Was it emotional for you because a real life human man died?
Keep that in mind when watching the sequel. The death of the character T'Challa has no context... it is not earned... and has no narrative value. All of the emotion for the fictional narrative is derived from a real world event that is in no way related to the movie structure.
It is emotional manipulation in it's purest form. The movie is barely average w/o the emotion of Boseman's death driving it home.

I just watched Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and I gotta say that I thought it was just okay. I was bored for about the first third, but it picked up a lot after that. However, while I like the characters, I don't love them. Angela Bassett is great as always, but I'm just not pumped to hang out with Shuri. Riri Williams is okay, but I didn't leave the film wanting more of her.
I think that's a big problem. If these characters never showed up again, I wouldn't really care. It remains to be seen if I'm in the minority on that, but when the first Iron Man was done, I DEFINITELY wanted more Tony Stark. When Civil War was over, I wanted more Black Panther. When The Avengers was over, I wanted more Loki. I didn't come out of this film wanting more of anyone.
Actually, that isn't true. I wanted more Namor, but it didn't leave me wanting more of any of the heroes.

Phase 3 was making a lot of money seemingly easy, but let's not forget that in a way it was the reward from building up the universe from 2008. There were great characters we all were invested in and a good overall story that was going up towards a climax with Infinity War and Endgame. Phase 4 however, is, in a way, like a new beginning it will take some time to get into another climax. The perfect analogy is investing in the stock market. Today the market can be low (bearish), but when you zoom out and see the big picture things will begin to take off towards another climax (bullish) if Marvel has a good general plan for this new era (like they did for phases 1,2, and 3).

$180 million dollars in a weekend has never even been seen by Spielberg - or Cameron (Avatar made its money over a long period of time)
Grace created the narrative and then just tries fit the numbers to it. She avoided the fact that the film set a record for November.
DCU - has *never* achieved this. So if this is not considered by MCU a huge success then they can forget about anything not called Avengers or Spiderman being ‘successful’.

I didn't expect this movie to break or come close to the original bc the lead actor was not in this movie. Well said. Also, the first Black Panther was a major cultural event on par with Star Wars: A New Hope and Sam Raimi's Spider-Man. I never seen a sequel to a cultural event outgross its predecessor. However, such sequels still make money that make rivals turn green with envy.

Grace, it isn't just about identity politics it is about an investment index called ESGs, E =environmental, S = Social AKA Identity Politics, G = Governance AKA speech control, so the whole thing is a total partisan division, companies that rank high in ESGs are Democrat companies like Disney and companies that rank low in ESGs are Republican companies like Tesla. So half of the country ain't interested. And not all people of color are into identity politics. I'm Mexican and I'm not into it.
So Disney due to ESGs has gone full political and full partisan.

Now Wakanda forever makes alittle less than the first because it's not coming out in some markets and now the sky is falling? Fandom gonna fandom

My only comment on Wakanda Forever is that when I saw Black Panther I felt it was a key step in the MCU journey heading towards Infinity Wars/End Game. Each Marvel movie was picking up a fervor building towards something I felt (and it was) going to be awesome. I felt I was on a journey. And, yes why Black Panther didn’t really deal with Thanos it was still very key in building Black Panther’s story. I loved Wakanda Forever and generally I liked all the Marvel movies (even Eternals). But, I just don’t know where Marvel is heading. I know Secret Wars is coming, but I am struggling to see how all the current stories fit. I am sure in hindsight we will know. I just feel like I am not on a journey for a big pay off yet.
