The first game designed by Takashi Nishiyama, who would later become the creator of Kung Fu Master, Street Fighter and Fatal Fury. He is truly the Miyamoto of arcade games.
This was the first game I played...I believe i was 4 or 5 years old. My godfather owned a pretty good PC for that era standards since he was working on a local bank...and I believe it was this title or a clone
This game reminds me of my uncle. This was one of his favorite arcade games, I teached him how to use emulators and installing Mame roms so he could play it some time to get the memories. Unfortunately, last year in 30th of June he passed away because of a heart attack. I started having depression since then. Fortunately I'm feeling better now, but his death won't get out of my head.
I was completely addicted to this game when I was a kid in the 80s. It's great to read all of these comments and to think how the game was played at the same time in different parts of the world with the same enthusiasm, never thought of that back then when I played, spending lunch money, it, was never enough, and I was gooood :)
I have exactly same feeling. I am from Czech republic,i played it with school buddies only in very early 90s but my lunch money went totally for moon patrol:-))))🙏
fun fact: It's designer (Takashi Nishiyama) would later be one of Street Fighter co-creators and also would be an important member of SNK Neo Geo era, producing and idealizing many games, such as Fatal Fury, Art of Fighting and The King of Fighters. Later on he left SNK to create Dimps (3rd party developer of many Bandai-Namco games and SF4/SFV), which he's the president until this day.
Growing up in Yugoslavia in the 80ies, this game was total badass, we would always playing in pairs, one kid steering and jumping, another kid as a gunner. That way two kids play for the price of one game, team work hehe
Put lots of money into this game in the early 80:s at the local petrol station (where a bunch of arcade and flipper games where in a sideroom). Good memories. As where Galaxians, Zaxxon, Decathlon, some car-racing games (viewed from above) and loads of other games over the years at that station (and also a local restaurant/grill)... Good memories.
There was that one rock next to a hole you had to shoot and jump at the same time. Once in a while i'd get to the end of the first level but that was about it.
I dont mean to be off topic but does any of you know of a tool to get back into an instagram account?? I was stupid forgot the login password. I appreciate any help you can give me
we queued up for hours at a time in the arcades back "82, still addictive as it ever was..download the arcade sidekick app on the playstore and check out all world hi scores for the 1000s of games on there
It was my first computer game played. I used to steal coins from my dad and run to a nearby game's saloon. OMG... it looks exactly as i remember. Tears in my eyes.
There was a local department store (Roses) I used to walk to just to play this game. This was back in the days when virtually every store had some sort of arcade game. I could clear the first course, but I never got anywhere near this far.
I was 13 and played this with my class mates after school every day. When i hear the sounds and music i feel like i am 13 again. Now 46 and will never play this with my buddies anymore😢 Thank you so much for putting here this video🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇
This was one of my favorites back in the day, possibly my #1 favorite (Joust and Galaga are pretty good too). When I was 7-8 years old I warned an adult who was playing the game not to slow down on the land mine stage, which is a major rookie mistake. He ignored me and few second later.... That is one of my favorite childhood memories.
Aah these games were more joyful than the games nowadays for me when I show these videos to my kids they say there is graphics or 3d bla bla bla I always say yep this is called time and generations development. But for me these games were are and will be my best times. 👍😉
@@mediavideos2176 some of the most beautiful/powerful music is simple. How many notes in Beethoven's 5th? Two. Sometimes at different pitches, but always the same interval.
I played this game time and time again in the arcade back in the day. Go to a good movie, then the arcade, out to eat, cruise and listen to good music. The 80's were the best.
Wow! That is REALLY well played! I must have been pretty good at this back in the day, I had happily repressed the memories of the tanks and the 'come-at-you-from-behind' speeders, and I was beginning to question my own memory in regards to the crater dwellers - but there they were! Memory vindicated! :D
As a kid I never could go beyond level 1 :( and I had like 2 coins... Yet I was amazed by the graphics on this one (in it's arcade box) ...it was situated in a crappy gas station somewhere around a route to go to the coast.
One of my favourite in the 80s. I lost a fortune playing it in the games room in my neighbourhood in Poland. Some curiosities: - I was able to pass rolling balls on full speed in O-T section, as well as tanks in T-Z - Sometimes we were able to reach 58 seconds in A-E section of the beginner course. Normally driving at full speed all the time gave you 59 sec. but jumping during the start gave you this extra second (or maybe it was a different trick?) - We were always curious what was the algorithm of awarding points after shoting a small space ship that you needed to jump over (A-E section in the champion course). From 500 to 1000 points but was it pure random? - The guy that owned the games room saw that we excelled at Moon Patrol spending more and more time on a single credit and once he disabled the low speed, so that you could drive only at medium and fast speed. What a mean guy! I.e. it was impossible to pass the second minefield in J-O section because the mines were too close to each other to jump over on medium speed. But we managed to jump in the critical moment two mines at a time at full speed! :-) Hey, any other tricks?
When we played this in the arcades everyone crowded round to watch, and then once we finished we watched the next person, we were the Twitch streamers of our time and we didn't charge anyone 😁
I remember playing the PC version in the 80's The PC version featured less colours ( CGA). At least on the machine I played. At the end of the map at the top bar, there was an icon depicting a base or sth like that,, which I used to call "The Castle" and always wanted to get there, but never did, as far, as I can remember :)
My mom would bring me to Ben Franklin craft store back in the early 80s. I would stand on a milk crate and she would be the jump or fire and I would do the joystick. I was about 4. She said people would look on in awe that I was playing this game. How times have changed.
At 8 bit computers I remember what I did with that game :D Forever classic! Those mines on L and K were so hard hahaha Or 2 craters closest to each other and a little ground between them only for my vehicle :D Good old times but I really want to play and watch the first Moon Patrol as I remembering it. Black and white screen! God this game have a place in my heart
I remember playing this on an arcade cabinet back in the day. I could never get too far because the older and bigger kids would shove the smaller kids out of the way so they could play
I'm 46 and I totally remember this in 1983.
I'm 55 and dumped so much money in this game back then when i was supposed to be in college
49 here and my mate and i Cycled 14 miles ( each way) for one game of this and a game of spectrum pinball.
Same here. I used to suck at video games back when this first came out.
We have the same age (48 now) and I also remember the coinop and the "odor" of play rooms as it was yesterday!
I’m 46 and remember spending hours at this game…Good old days !!
Man I was 8 years old. Sneaking up late nights to play my atari. The memories are unreal. It's like it was another life.
This was the arcade version. Was there a version for the Atari 2600??
@ericturner2477 yes

After all these years, I finally got to see how the game ran its course. Thanks for the memories.

It's hilarious how I still remember this catchy little tune of the arcade game after all these years.

Holy Smokes! I totally forgot about this game!! I used to love this as a kid. miss the good ol' arcade in the mall days. Bring Back Aladdin's Castle!!
I remember Aladdins Castle.
In the Top 10 of the best arcade games of all time. Moon Patrol remains great fun to play.
My favorite rage quit classic. I remember this being so hard.
'rage quit' lol I never heard that expression before, it's so true. And yeh I remember this being a tough nut, I got nowhere with it.
its not as hard as it looks, there is a pattern to the game that never changes...Frogger is the same, it also runs by patterns lol

one of my fav classics . i loved that suspension!
Moon Patrol was one of the coolest in my opinion. And it was so nicely designed. The colors are just amazing. It's so fucking tasteful.
And the great music.... A friend of mine once said "I could boogie to it all night long" : )

Pumped hundreds of quarters into this game. One of the best of the 80s.
Man this music haunts me from when I was a kid lol
That's a well played dude! Very impressive! 👍👍👍
I always loved how the rover holds its wheels up when jumping. It's kinda cute 😅
Played this beauty as a little 3 y o kid, my father sold his atari soon.
Now I'll buy it on ps4 and play it after 30 years. I'm excited 👏🏽💯

One of my favorite games. I want to play it again…

As a kid, I remember feeling pretty cocky finishing up the regular course, and then getting utterly humiliated in the Champion course.

This music was everything.
Truly an iconic game. any version is well worth playing. 🙂👍👍
My favourite game by far, this coming from someone who isn’t a gamer as such. Was obsessed with it as a kid. I played the sit down style. So much fun.
This game swallowed up so much of my pocket money, and it was all over after 3 minutes, tops.
Aah these games were more joyful than the games nowadays for me when I show these videos to my kids they say there is graphics or 3d bla bla bla I always say yep this is called time and generations development. But for me these games were are and will be my best times. 👍😉
Was briefly in a band, we played this music. Best video game ditty of the day
Love the music
Best. Video. Game. Music. EVAR.
Do you think this music somehow influenced the "Pain Lies on the Riverside" (live) bass line?
Its just five notes repeating.

I clocked this game as a kid at our local cafe.... proud moments indeed.
The sound of the cannon was amazing.
I always had trouble with this game but I still loved it...Great memories
1 of the best classics I had it on my Atari also
I used to get so sweaty in the 80's playing this in arcades.
Love the music still!

impressive, i now have MAME on my Raspberry pi...so i will give this game some serious attention now lol, i was pretty handy at it back in the day
I've totally forgotten this game until I just saw the video. It was great for its time!
Damn, the moon is a dangerous place! Well played, thanks for sharing, nice memories!

Someone said this tune was the inspiration of the paperboy theme, I kind of hear it!
Che spettacolo...indimenticabili I primi games della mia vita... Avevo solo 11 anni... Come passa il tempo 😢💖
I don't think I got this far ever. Nice work.
That soundtrack is strangely addicting.
I have never seen such a serious play vid of a retro game. Wow!
Used to play this game a lot at the local Loblaws back in the 80's whenever my folks would go grocery shopping in Newmarket.
Dude thanks for refreshing my childhood memories
Williams and Irem worked together on this title and, as far as I know, it's the only time in which both companies worked together on a game.
Pax Humana - If more companies worked together some truly awesome games could be made e.g. Naughty Dog + Rockstar = Amazing
I love the soundtrack.
The memories seeing this game truly makes me feel funny like when I climb the ropes in gym class and slide down and clench up
Nintendo switch brought me here. Damn i had forgot about this game
Space exploration has always been fraught with danger. Our brave astronauts sacrifice a lot to keep us safe.
I played that game in 1982 in the arcade hall!
How come nobody is talking about the groundbreaking 3 layers of parallax scrolling?
This was unheard of back then!!!
UNREAL tech for 1982

Most advanced aspect of this game - making the tires follow the shape of the ground.
Unbelievably amazing play!
Excellent play. Total moon patrol mastery!
Great to see someone play an arcade game well for a change. (Unless it's an AI playing.)
OMg I loved this game :) It was hard too.

Strange. I remember grownups putting their quarter on the screen to show they got next game.
@@sandal_thong8631Agreed, that was the usual arcade etiquette. Lining up quarters on the ridge of the screen or the top panel of the cabinet.
That’s some pretty ambitious enemy diversification for 1982. The parallax too, it’s clearly cartoon inspired.
