    What is most interesting is that we have not mapped the entire planet with LiDar yet. Google, Apple and other tech companies did it in a year or two to build their simple map programs for telephones and apps using exactly the same technology combined with cameras. What is wrong with the archaeological community? Why aren’t they as innovative?

    • @kiraneko8d369
      @kiraneko8d369 3 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Funding. I’m an archaeology student trying to figure that part out. We all need to be Laura Croft to pull of what we want.

    • @twotwotwo871
      @twotwotwo871 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@kiraneko8d369A robust, entry-level LiDAR system comes in around $23,000 (USD). A drone to go with it comes in at $10,000-16,000. Additional costs include accessories for your drone, batteries, a base station, and a GPS rover which can add $10,000 to the total.
      Not the mention the time/manpower to map the whole planet. You'd need hundreds, if not thousands of these systems and just as many trained people to capture the data, then many powerful computers and a dedicated program to map the points to be visualized in software.

      I think she’s saying that it used to stand for Li(ght) Detection And Ranging, so the ‘li’ in Light pronounced like ‘lie’ made sense. Now it seems to stand for Light Imaging Detection And Ranging, so the ‘I’ is pronounced like the I in Imaging. Couldn’t find anything on the web the supports that change, though.

    😶 Genuine Question: How would have photogrammetry stacked up against LIDAR here?

    • @CryptoAnthropologist
      @CryptoAnthropologist  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      LIDAR uses laser beams, and calculates the time it takes to return to create 3D imaging. If I'm not mistaken, photogrammetry generates 2d or 3d images based on photography. So basically, LiDAR uses light to make measurements, whereas photogrammetry uses captured images, that can be processed and combined to enable measurements.

    Interesting subject and good script. A better microphone would definitively have a great impact on the quality of the video and the music was a bit load. But interesting !

      Thanks for the feedback. I just recorded this on my cellphone, and as you can see I don't have much experience in video editing! I hope to make them much better quality in the future.

      Technically, the use of lidar would definitely help. But not sure where you would get your hands on that level of tech

    can this be done over the oceans? Can't till we confirm atlantis.

    • @CryptoAnthropologist
      @CryptoAnthropologist  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, Lidar can be used to map subsurface topography.
      Early tests of LiDAR in the sea included investigation of clams nearly 3 kilometers below the ocean surface in Monterey Canyon, demonstrating that the bathymetric lidar - using blue-green wavelengths to penetrate water - could resolve individual animals and the trails left by their movements.

    And they say they didn't know about el chapo's tunnels.
    This is an old military technology that was borrowed by archeology atleast a decade ago and was already at least a decade old even then.

      It's based on light - LIDAR... Radar is radio waves. What that means is - it can't penetrate ground. It only scans surface. For underground, you would have to use ultra sound. Try to use your brain sometimes, before you talk and embarras yourself...
