- At the end of Newport Avenue in Ocean Beach, a locked chain link fence marks the entrance to the iconic Ocean Beach Pier.
The pier, often considered the center of Ocean Beach, now sits in disrepair, with planks missing from the deck and weakened pylons left to be battered by the incoming surf. Over several years, the city has poured millions of dollars to repair damaged sections. Last year, the city decided to close it for good.
The decision was a long time coming.
Back in 2018, a study by consultants Moffatt & Nichol found that ongoing structural problems with the aging pier have caused it to reach the end of its useful service life. That study also determined that potentially replacing the pier is the best option for it in the long-term, given the ongoing costs of repairs and the need to modernize the facility, as well as anticipating future sea-level rise.

The café better be added to that Pier!! I have so many amazing memories in that café!!
190 million? That money can be used for something better.
Much better ways to spend $190M. And we all know if they say $190M it will really cost $400M+.
How would a pier like that be $190M? The city's getting scammed as usual.
That's actually pretty cheap
Build affordable house instead to spend 190 milion dollars like that.
California requires a 185 million dollar environmental study
Especially the rare combos but a few times every year Dec-Mar when you could get large swell
The wave would be much better if there was no pier
When the waves are really big there is an outside set bigger than blacks it's a gigantic left at the end of the pier ....they should not build the T off to the mission Bay side so it becomes more of a draw to pull in real surfers
With the City of San Diego involved, it will be much, much more than 190M. Cost overruns, environmental studies, delays of all sorts and you can probably expect double to triple the price. Remember our finest city has goofed Qualcomm Stadium, Lake Hodges Dam, 101 Ash Street just to name a few. You stay classy San Diego!
If it’s built under a Public-Private partnership, you can bet it won’t be free and open to the public.
Not necessarily. If there are private concessions, then walking the pier could still be free. However, spending a night in a private hotel on the pier would incur a cost.
@@WonderProfessor Or there could be fees to fish, use benches, or even time limits. Don’t underestimate capitalism.
@@heyo423 Given the lion's share of the money will come from public sources, that is highly unlikely. However, we shall see. And yes, one should never underestimate the level of greed and avarice in the heart of some people.
Here since 1946 , surfing since 1954. This is a monumental. waste of money.
You only say that because you won't enjoy it for long.
WE can build and do anything WE choose to do. Remember in the energy "crisis" when we built generating plants all over in a week !!
190-million that so CRAZY. I grew up going there in the 70-80-90s
I was there for the grand opening and parade and have the home movies.
all the pot shops there could pay for it.
Will it include affordable housing or homeless shelters?
How long have you lived here to realize homeless shelters don’t work? Mental health issue bro, get with the times dude. Our homeless are batshit, and need help not only a place to live
They's be better off making more parking.
There were years to do this during Covid-and now they close it right as summer approaches. We need to ensure piers remain public and are correctly built and maintained to ensure they are available to all.
Fishing piers are always nasty pieces of sh!t. ... Go ahead San Diego, re-build it.
Yeah the fishing is pretty detestable. A shame they can’t limit the amount of things you can bring it’s almost like folks are camping on the pier…
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
We make it for half the price. Mexicans.
