I respect the kid who is okay with playing the mallet part as a percussionist. I honestly like playing mallets. I would rather play mallets over bass drum. 👍 edit: woah 3k likes in a week crazy tysm!
Fr I’m a first chair percussion, so I always get first pick, and when I get snare I see one of the band directors playing mallets and I’m like why do y’all do this to mallets.
She’s nice my band teacher would never let the percussion pick their own things to play. He knew who he wanted to play what and he handed it directly to them. They also got treated the hardest because they were the heart of the band and if they slow down, we slow down.
As a band teacher, you sometimes have to assign parts so kids don’t argue, and so you know you’ll have good coverage of parts. Letting them pick their parts isn’t really being “nice,” and not letting percussion pick their parts isn’t “not nice” either
Real, as a general percussionist, who plays mallets mostly, I’m one of the only ones who both enjoys it and is good at it. It sucks, but is quite rewarding. Most people saying they hate mallets, if you get a chance to pick, take them every now and then, then you can do almost all of the parts, besides timpani. It makes it much easier, and keeps you off of aux for the most part.
Okay, she’s really nice, because at my school, the directors assign everyone parts, and we have to learn it whether we like it or not. Granted, it does give everyone a chance to play all sorts of instruments, which is the purpose, so I’m grateful for that. Also, we have one kid, *one* kid who loves piano and so they’re really glad to get assigned the mallet instruments.
We have this guy in our high school's highest concert band. I found out he WAS the mallet percussion. Like, he was DCI-ing this. He's surrounded by 4 different mallet percussion instruments and is making the smoothest transitions known to man and I'm watching flabbergasted like "bro why aren't you in Carolina Crown or getting paid for this"
That setup reminds me of a very stellar recording of Concertino for Four Percussion. My high school's top group recorded that piece for our MFA National Concert Band Festival audition, and I can gladly say the judges enjoyed the execution as we did make it.
Ugh. You just gave me flashbacks to high school😂 Wasn’t quite at that level, but there were times when I was the entire mallet section with 4 or 5 instrument swaps. Or I was just surrounded by instruments. It’s definitely harder than it looks sometimes, especially with mallet swaps
Our precussionists would spend over an hour arguing who does the drum kit and who does Bells, my band teacher made them have one piece with bells and another with the drum kit, alternating through music pieces
In my school, 6th grade band percussion plays whatever, and I ALWAYS wanted to be bells. Now, in the 7th and 8th grade bands, we have people who always play bells (mallet percussion) and people who play other percussion instruments (battery percussion)
Any bell or marimba was given to the only guy who was in the marching band. The bad part was that my friend and I usually had 4 instruments to play, and we were always paired together to play them.
I loved mallet percussion. Because of a band director that encouraged me when I was younger I ended up being the principal mallet percussionist in high school and in an outside ensemble group. I miss playing so much and have been trying to find a group I can join
As a percussionist I was the kid on bells. I hated drums and was put on mallets for everything. The more I watch this the more it makes me think I’m the weird one
I don't think that's weird, in my experience is that most percussionists either really like battery and hate mallets or really like mallets and hate battery. I think battery percussionists an really interesting breed because so much of my enjoyment of music is because of harmony and dissonance, I can't imagine playing an instrument that is atonal. (Trombone player primarily, for reference.)
My school has people who mainly do snare, people who mainly do timpani, one person who can do everything, my friend who can play chimes and mallets, and someone who can play mallets. Everyone knows what they can and can’t do so it’s fine
I don’t see percussion itself as hard-it’s more like the distribution of parts that’s the hardest part of being a percussionist. But what do I know, I’m just a flute 😭
@@Suuprzz A lot of percussion instruments are easy. Mallet instruments are arguably the hardest percussive instruments (except for piano, which usually isn't used in band anyway)
Bro in my class we all have to rotate every time we play. But i normally get set up first so i get the snare part. I also have a friend who likes the bells so it's nice
This is why my band director pre-decides our parts based on what we’ve recently played 😂 (Or based on skill level, those who are “better” players get to do the more advanced stuff at the end of the year or at big events.)
i was the only one who knew how to play any mallet instrument (cause God forbid we learn anything as percussionist) and i was assigned every mallet part from my 4th grade year to my 8th grade year
In my band there’s really only 3 of us that enjoy bells and I’m one of them. I’m considered one of our best bell players and I play in front ensemble in our marching band. I think it’s a lot of fun ❤
Funny story: in our middle school band, we had two percussionists. Me and this dude. The dude was super good at the drum set so that was his job. I was weirdly able to switch between a million tiny instruments in a matter of seconds, so I'd get all those things. Nobody would play bells, and so I never learned to read notes or play bells properly and then we had a test on bells and guess who failed?
i was in band for 8 years (color guard and percussion) and loved mallets! i wasn’t good, but i tried and to this day it’s one of the only percussion instruments i’d gladly hop back on!
mrs. allen, i love your videos. i used to want to teach music so badly. i went through a lot of stuff in college & didn’t pursue my musical career. but watching your videos now make me want to play again & be a teacher. maybe one day in the future. 🤍
I’m a bells player. I don’t know why people hate it. It’s really fun once you get the hang of it. Sight reading might be tricky to do on the fly but it’s better then other complex instruments.
My favorite for concert season is bells, and my band director says that I'm the best at it, so I'm very happy with it. Sadly, I'm not going to be in band my next two years of high school, but I'll likely join back in college
I am a mallet section leader in my band. I have shown everyone how cool the instrument truly is and I’ve somehow made my silly little section one of the favorites in our whole band.
when i was a kid i loved to play mallets! now im on snare in the marching band, but mallets hold a special place in my heart. im fifth in my state on vibes!
Kid in my highschool who was by far the best percussionist the school had seen, made everyone want to play the xylophone, he could play with 2 mallets in each hand and it was incredible watching him!
as a percussionist, this is so real. most of us only did percussion to play drums, including me, i used to hate getting put on mallets (our band director always assigned us parts we didnt choose them ourselves) but then i got put into front ensemble when i got to high school and then i started to enjoy mallets more and now mallets is mostly all i do 😊
CAN YOU MAKE A VIDEO ABOUT THE PRODIGY KID PERCUSSION? I have always been good in EVERYTHING even on bells. I would be happy to receive any type of percussion part
I had to play a really hard vibraphone part for my first year of marching band with no prior experience. It sucked so much to see my friends having fun with the upper classmen when everyone in my section knew hardly anything, but it taught me so much. It also made me a better guitarist.
I’m primarily a mallet player! I dislike playing bells (especially if it calls for brass mallets) but I love it so much. 4 mallet marimba is my favorite!
as a percussionist, this is accurate, but i was the kid who loved playing mallets. i taught my self piano in 3rd grade and joined a jv indoor percussion group in 4th grade where i played vibraphone, joined the varsity indoor percussion team and learned 4 mallet technique in 6th grade, and front ensemble captain for 10th-12th grade. i still love it to this day and am saving up to buy my own marimba. i miss playing so much!
Yep two kids in my percussion section don’t like anything but mallets(church chimes included) they both played trumpet but wanted something new so everyone loves them.
I encourage my percussionists rotate and share. I do have a main snare player. He will give others the opportunity especially when the snare parts are easier. I try to create a team environment.
I’m a percussionist and I think that I would take snare or a fun instrument or drum kit there is also 2 percussionists in my band who love bells. But my teacher assigns us parts.
There’s this really shy percussionist in our band, and she always plays the bells in our music. Our band director recently had finally moved her to the snare drum, and she was actually REALLY good at it like what the heck 😭

Reminds me of a percussion friend I had during high school. He went in freshman year telling the teacher he only played base drum and came out senior year as the go-to bells guy. Heck, the piece he chose to do as his senior solo was a wild arrangement that had him doing all of the percussion parts of the song. Wish I could remember what it was called.

same, like playing other instruments is fun but I always go for the bell parts
BRO IM SO BAD At BELLS 😭😭
I like the bells I just need to practice more (ive memorized the bass drum for a song were doing and not the bells)
Same, as a piano player I'm the only good percussionist for bell parts.
I've been on both sides of this, but at this point whatever I get to play is fun
As a percussionist, this is the most relatable thing I've ever seen 😂
For real, it's more relatable when I basically play nothing but mallets 😂
I am the last person lol
I played piano before percussion so I prefer bells
Fr I’m a first chair percussion, so I always get first pick, and when I get snare I see one of the band directors playing mallets and I’m like why do y’all do this to mallets.

"off the aux"? immigrant confusion😅
@ Aux as in Auxiliary percussion, such as tambourine, triangle, suspended cymbal, and sadly, even cowbell.
I have trouble reading the staff so I never go for the bells
Aux is so fun though!! I played bells last year, but aux and timpani are definitely my favorites. Aux is super underrated because it's "less cool"
