      The truth is that they are quite interesting books, thank you very much for your recommendations. Although it would be nice if it was something "more healthier" and if possible they should use the metric measurement system and not things they only use in America

    Ten years ago or so, my mother-in-law told me that she'd had the Cooking For Two cookbook early in their marriage (they were married in 1967) and that she was wishing for it again now that they were older and it was just the two of them. Not long after, I found a paperback copy at the thrift store and had it spiral-bound and gave it to her for Christmas. She was thrilled and has continued to use it all these years later!

    I had that orange cookbook for kids back in the day. I think I made pretzels out of it. Probably got it at the book fair or book order forms when I was a kid. Grew up looking though my parents Better Homes and Gardens and started collecting cookbooks when I was a kid. Like for Christmas I would get cookbooks when I was in grade 10. Lol. I still have so many books.

    I will admit to having copies of both the Cooky book and the boys and girls cookbook. Both are reprints, but I love them and have used them. My top 5 vintage cookbooks (or reprints of vintage cookbooks) based on personal use:
    Betty Crocker Picture Cookbook (1951 edition)
    Boston Cooking School Cookbook (1945 edition/printing)
    The Purity Cookbook (reprint with the yellow cover, originally from the Purity Flour Company)
    The Five Roses Cookbook (reprint, originally from the Five Roses Flour company)
    Betty Crocker Cooky Book (reprint, the same as yours)
    The Betty Crocker books are new (to me) books that I was not familiar with until a couple of years ago. The others three books were ones I learned to cook from with my grandmothers. In particular, the Purity and Five Roses cookbooks were staples where I grew up and every household had one or both of these books. They were given as graduation presents, wedding presents, or even birthday presents. A more modern household might also have one of the “new” Robin Hood flour cookbooks.

    • @cooking_the_books
      @cooking_the_books  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't have The Purity Cookbook or The Five Roses Cookbook. Just looked them up...I think I need them. 😄 I don't see Robin Hood products here in the US anymore (at least not where I've lived), but vividly remember my grandma using their pizza crust most Saturday nights. What a treat!

    I remember the Betty Crocker Cookie Cookbook like it was yesterday! I really love this, I was in the kitchen with my mom all the time while growing up, I wanted to be a chef, lol. That didn't turn out so well, lol.

      The Cooky Book is SUCH a classic. I recommend it to everyone who doesn't already have it! Do you have any favorite recipes that I should try? My go to's are the Fudge Meltaways, Cream Wafers, and a chocolate cake-like cookie that I don't recall the name of at the moment. Date Bait is WILD. Very old fashioned ideas and uh...interesting recipes. 😆

    I picked up a spiral bound hard cover edition of Betty Crocker's Cookbook for Boys and Girls at a thrift store today for 2 dollars. It has a picture of children with brownies on the front cover and it's dated 1976 - Second Edition. I was really happy to find it. Another one I picked up is from 1963 and it's a plastic binder with the title "Treasury of Good Food Ideas" From the Kraft Kitchens. Seems like Kraft published different book inserts for the inside?? I"m not really sure, but the one I have has a recipe "book" inside called All Star TV Recipes from the Kraft Kitchens. There were bonus pamphlet size books inside too, which made me happy.

    Our pups get into stuff too! Wiggy got my new wooden spoon recently. Cooky Book. That's funny. I like that book with the communication through pictures. So helpful to see images. I also like the art/photos/cartoons and just the mix of things, in books. Happy Reading. Cheers, Ivy.

      @@cooking_the_books I love that. For me, I also love photos since I take pictures of food. But I also love cartoons because I draw. I like the whole mixture. Wiggy is. She must not have liked it because the spoon kept pretty safe. Unlike our kitchen chair and snack tray from when she was a pup. But you know, those are like worn cookery books. Just adds to the story and charm.

    I need that cooky book. I love cookie cookbooks. We have a better homes and gardens for Christmas that I love. I love that your mom wrote in the book so you remember not to make it again. So when did you start collecting cookbooks? I think I started baking when I was pretty little. My first cookbook was the Joy of Cooking. So how many cookbooks do you think you have now?

      The Cooky Book is such a classic. I recommend it to everyone! I'll bet the GH&G Christmas book you have is amazing. We've always had a lot of cookbooks in the house, but I was probably around 11/12 when I started buying books on my own. Very ironic that the Carnation teen cookbook is "colourful", and yet no one of colour in the illustrations. Does anyone know if they make teen cookbooks for Black kids in those days?
