I'm five years older than you and I know all those feelings you're talking about: being young and messy and cute and doing things you're not quite comfortable with so you might be seen as "cool". Though I grew up in bumfuck nowhere, so there were no clubs to go to. I ended up meeting the cutest little goth boy at a battle of the bands and falling for him. We were adorable and our makeup sucked and our clothes were just black items with holes cut into them. Idk letting a 14 year old go to 18+ nightclubs with grown men and predators who go after grown women, let alone a minor was probably not the most awesome move. Maybe the 90’s was not as dangerous as today. Also a lot of drug issues from that freedom followed Dorian as an adult like OD’s and addictions. I’m not saying parents need to be strict and dictators but…. There is definitely a line. No hate to Dorian at all though, that’s all on the parents.

@@Jess-zm5xt Where I'm from it's normal for teenagers to go to clubs. As long as they're with friends and the parents are picking them up or are aware which parent is picking them up or how they get home it's fine. An unsafe situation involving drugs or alcohol can also happen at a house party, but banning your teen from going to those is ridiculous imo. You just have to educate your child and hope for the best, at the end of the day they are their own person.

My mother used to dress me as a child like a little porcelain doll. As I got older, she still dressed me what she called "cute", but a bit less lace and ruffles. So I was bullied for that on top of being bullied for being an Autistic "gifted" kid all the teachers adored. It wasn't until I was 11 that I realized that other kid's mother's didn't pick their clothes out at that age. When I discovered the Goth scene at age 13, my Aunt bought me my first two pairs of outfits for my birthday and she took me to her house and did my makeup and hair and then my mother came and saw me and had a conniption fit. She said for my Aunt to really tell me with what I looked like with that "stuff" on my face and in all black. My Aunt turned to me and told me when she moved out, she had black cutlery, black plates, black bedsheets and bedspread and she said, "be who you want to be". And of course, my mother was like, "Susan!" And had another fit. To this day, my mother still hates the Goth look, but I don't care because it makes me happy! 🦇

But even though im not in the goth culture anymore, I absolutely love your videos. I love how you look, and I love how you talk. Im not saying im super clever or anything, but its so nice to hear someone else talk fast and articulatly. I remember the first alternative girl that I thought was the prettiest, coolest thing on the planet and wishing to be her. She always looked so cool and confident and her hair was different colors all the time. My brother actually ended up dating her for a while and I almost had a heart attack when she showed up at our house one day! But she turned out to be super nice too and we are still cool to this day! I remember being so easily completely enamored by anything in a trenchcoat and eyeliner, yet being so awkward and clueless and having no idea what to do if anyone actually tried to talk to me. Fun times, lol.

However, as a teen I wouldn't put on my dog collar and choke chain until I was on the schoolbus far away from my house.😅 I was pretty boring as a Goth in my teens, heterosexual, no makeup, no drugs, no alcohol, just crazy clothes. But I was comfortable being me.
Growing up in a rural town there were not many of us. You would get odd stares from people. My attitude was "You got a f***n' problem?" lol. My town didn't really have a scene and I didn't know any other goths during that time. Most of my socializing with other goths was done online. I was the only one in my small group of friends. tbh if I reallllllllly wanted to be passive aggressive about it I'd engineer some sort of crazy accident that involved getting a LOT of glue, chewing gum, etc stuck in my hair to the point where the only option would be to just shave it all off

Omg, as a 28 year old male from the goth scene in Germany I find it astounding how I can relate to soooo much of your stories :D. I started clubbing at the age of 15 and got into all of the clubs because my "crew" was clubbing for a few years already and everyone knew the owners, securities, DJs, etc. and I particularly remember seeing the "grown up" goth guys and thinking to myself how I wanna be like them ... so yeeeah, a lot of similarities there. But I actually never thought that clubs were just for illegal drugs... I actually entered the world of party drugs just a few years back. But, oh man, listening to your stories brings back so much memories from 10+ years ago. I really busted out laughing at your "make out session", I think everyone that was in the goth scene around 2000 - 2010 got those kind of stories. Thank you so so much :D

I love videos like this, I wish I got to experience the goth scene in my teens when it was thriving ,I’m 18 currently and I don’t even know one other person who likes the same music as me , the most I have is an alternative club in my city which I’ve been to twice and they don’t play any goth music at all , only really nu metal and mumble rap . :(((( i would love nothing more than to have experienced goth culture in the 80s/90s even 2000s

This is one of the most effortlessly fantastic videos I've ever watched. What a great celebration of the little piece of history and culture you lived through. Thank you so much for sharing!

You’re amazing. And my girls went thu what is defined now as emo phases. Loved it! And tho they still embrace the spooky they dress more norm now but I love they were into the same things I was from the book on paganism and ripped black jeans and black eyeliner lol. And yes they can dye their hair etc. I shaved the side of my daughters head when she was 11 or 12. Looked awesome.

Your stepdad sounds like a character in his own low-key way. I’d love to hear more stories about random interactions you’ve had with him during your babybat years.

When I was thirteen my mom helped me dye my hair purple. I have the absolute best family lol. I had limits about going out and doing risky things, but as far as creative stuff goes they were super supportive.
    Good times..

"trying to be a grown-up" is usually very over-rated and misunderstood
