A tip for everyone who doesn't know what to do when a grease fire breaks out: Don't. Use. Water. For actual procedure, first you take it off the heat and then, either try to cover it with a pot lid to kill the fire, and in times where that isn't an option, use salt or baking soda. Also make sure your vents are on when cooking meats, especially red meat.
If deep oil is on fire and you put a lid on it, it will overflow

I heard stories of people using flour...but its not recommended the flour can make it worse because it itself is flammable and could supposedly explode much like water.
The most reliable is the method stated here is to turn off the heat and put a lid on it to starve the flame. You can also use salt/baking soda if small or if using a lid is not working but the lid method is best, I was also told Sand was another good alternative if Salt/Baking soda is not available.
If all else fails you could use a Fire extinguisher but it should be noted the Fire extinguisher has chemicals that cant be consumed so your area and cookware will need to be cleaned thoroughly to be used again after.
I am like on one hand I know you shouldn't but I cant get mad at people because peoples respondent conditioning to Fire is WATER its because of the continual drilling of Water beats Fire. Creating this situation of why you see so many people use water on a grease fire its this lack of knowing between the types of fire and breaking that habit that really need to be done on a greater scale to avoid such situations.
Yes! And do not try to use any other powder to put it out, you will cause it to get much much worse, only salt or baking soda, if you don't have those, just do whatever else you can to contain it.

Certain glassware can be placed on stoves, but most can't. Obviously these people can't read instructions for the products they buy.

I've got a glass top stove, and I think it's awesome. Easy to clean as well, and the oven is self-cleaning so what's not to like. I also use it wisely, none of my cooking boils over onto the top so I guess that's why it works great for me

I don't understand how people don't know what to do. If I think back to my childhood, my parents told me what to do, we learnt what to do in school, a fireman also came into school, and told us what to do, we learnt what to do at cubs, we went to fire station with cubs, and a fireman showed us exactly what would happen, if we didn't do what we were told to do, we learnt what to do at scouts. Learning what to do in this situation was a yearly part of my childhood, like learning about the water cycle or photosynthesis. How the fuck do you get to young adulthood, and not know what to do?

The girl at 11:47 is actually a perfect video for training. As soon the pan caught fire she was just making mistake after mistake. She is just the pinnacle and best example I've seen of what NOT to do with a kitchen fire.

This is a good time to remind folks of a few simple safety tips!
1. Do not cook anything on the stove in a glass container. Glass will explode
2. If your oil, butter, etc... or anything really, catches fire. Do NOT use Water, it will spread that which is currently on fire. If the fire is in a pan or pot, it's scary, but put the lid on it. Preferably one with no holes in the top.
3. Don't put plastic in the oven. Ever.
4. If something seems unsafe, it probably is
5. Thankfully I didn't see it in this video, but if you drop a knife or anything else really, don't try to catch it. Let it fall. It may break, it may damage the floor, but it's better than you damaging yourself. A hospital bill is much worse than a new plate.

With glass, change in temperature really matters, too. That glass exploded on the stove, because she put frozen cubes of garlic in it (still never heat glass on the stove top). The guys mushroom dish exploded, because he put it on his slightly damp wooden cutting board. If you dump your hot glass dish in the sink, it's likely to explode. Keep hot glass on the stove top (after you take it out the oven) or on a completely dry wooden cutting board.
All glass will not explode on a stovetop, or when going from hot to cold. Read your glassware, it will say what you can and can not do with it on the bottom, and if it doesn't say it then don't do it. Also, don't put your head in plastic bags.

PSA for anyone that has a grease fire in their kitchen: DO NOT put water on it. Remove from heat, and smother it with either a lid, or wet a towel and place it over the pan/pot.

When you've experienced a pressure cooker exploding and a knife going through your toe, molten sugar melting your pantyhoes to your leg, you know to be very careful in the kitchen. (I'm a chef) 😅
Please don't mention pressure cookers exploding. I love pressure cooking dearly, but it still scares me every time.
@@thomasyates3078 It was an industrial pressure cooker (like an "oven"), the door was like a bank vault door, but it gave away.. lucky no one was standing in front of it, would've easily crushed bones.. we cleaned potatoes from the walls and ceiling for an entire weekend, a window broke, a cast iron pan broke in half (industrial size).. I was always super scared of it, now even more. But I have seen home cookers act like rockets too.. 😬
Can confirm, I've worked in animal processing and I know from experience how dangerous a sharp knife is- and how much more dangerous a dull knife is. I once watched a careless employee put a filet knife straight through the bicep of a coworker next to them completely on accident. Kitchens can be super dangerous.
Back in the '80s I was working in a kitchen in Southern California and it was Sunday brunch, me and another cook were using the Fryolater cooking batches of chicken when my co-worker slipped carrying a hotel pan of fried chicken, and as he fell his elbow hit the edge of the drip tray on deep fryer causing it tip over and pour the hot oil all over his body as he fell on the floor, and I mean it poured over him everywhere from his head down his whole body front back.
It was absolutely unbelievable! Everyone was excited and panicking and not sure what to do, and the strange thing was the guy didn't scream or anything , he actually stood up and was completely silent, we learned from the paramedics that was because he was in shock.
I remember as they were wheeling him out on the gurney there was skin falling off of his body from being burned so badly.
I happened to run into the guy years later, and he had been pretty badly disfigured from the accident, real nice guy, I was really sorry to see that happen to him , I know he got a huge financial settlement out of it but still there's no way it was worth it with what he went through.
If I was working in a kitchen like that I would only be wearing clothes made entirely of cotton. My grandmother had some gnarly burns on her legs from a pot of hot tea spilling on her hosiery which promptly melted and fused with her skin. This is also why firefighters wear all cotton, cotton/nomex, aramid or other flame/heat resistant materials under the gear, you do not want your underwear fusing to your nethers if things get hot.
The last lady with the cascading failures up to and including thinking adding water to that fire was a good idea. lol
