I love your channel. So glad I found it. As a reader, I’ve been slumming it in reading trashy mysteries and old pulp fiction the last few years, but now have switched to literary classics and it’s reinvigorated me as a book lover. It all started with Don Quixote last year.
I didn't pull any stats, but I feel like a lot of my favourite books have/deal with -time, what it is, some time travel maybe -whimsical magical realism / realism with surreal elements -gothic horror mood -fantasy/scifi that comments on real world issues -ecological apocalypse / humans get a hard lesson from nature -beautiful writing, can be flowery or very simple -books about books and stories (how surprising :D) The author who has ghotten most 5 stars from me is probably Terry Pratchett, which is not surprising when I look at this list. Usually his books have at least one element, some (usually my favourites) more.
Re: Viking and Old Norse. Have you read the John Gwynne series The Bloodsworn Saga based on that? There are two books out so far. And do you follow Philip Chase? His expertise is in Old Norse and has his own series coming out soon. There's a video about the map so far. He's a college professor.
Absolutely fascinating & *soo* interesting.. such a fresh take on bookish stats 🤗💝 Much of what you say resonates particularly rating primarily for emotional reaction / residue on the long term & yah.. historical fic / fantasy with that melancholy tone & dark academia im with u & gimme the purple/ pretentious prose also 🤣🤷♀😊
I think I give five stars mostly to classics and to historical romance books I don't read much more. I have enclosed my world to regency and Victorian classics and a spattering of regency romance books. I'm like you, I like slow burns and angst for a couple. I do give high stars to those books that grab me emotionally. I joined Goodreads several years ago and went through and clicked books to put on my list that I would like to read and those that I read. I just went in and eliminated a lot of those "like to read" books that I'd lost interest in and added books that I had read Then I went in and categorized them. I put several in one so that I could go straight to that section. I would like to have more books in that I have actually read.
I think I'm still trying to figure out what exactly makes a Five star read for me, but I think it's purely emotional. If the book gets me excited and I have a good time reading it feels like a five star right after I finish it, but is that just the emotional high I'm getting after I finish a good book? I always joke that I'm so easy to please, but I think it's just I don't understand my own rating system. I worry about making sure I don't give every book I like Five stars, just because it's easy to rate a book I like that. I want to make sure I have levels in what I feel about the books I read and I know that not every book I enjoy is necessarily worth five stars, but close, like four maybe. Does that make sense?
Have u ever thought of doing a a video of your favourite books of all time? Think that would b really interesting to see because u give some really great recommendations, I’d love to know what your top books r so I can go and buy them all
Funny you’re the only booktuber I watched who rated Booth 5 star. Everyone else rated it as the worst book of the year. The book is on my tbr I can’t wait to read it because of all these mixed reviews.
I’m enjoying watching these five star audit videos. I can’t recall, have you read Strange the Dreamer? I feel like that’s one you might give five stars to.

"Please talk pretentious to me." LOL
These videos are so fascinating. I feel like I’d need to do a classics version and a recent publish version separately 😊
