Another feature of 20lb propane tanks is that you only have to buy the tank once and then use it for several lifetimes. I tend to find mine on the curb but the principle is the same. Tanks are good for 12 years after manufacture, so for those 10 years refill it, after that it needs to be retested. Instead of getting it tested yourself, turn it in at an exchange for a recertified tank (almost all of them are recertified), the recertified tanks are good for another 5 years and I believe can be recertified 3 times, but if the exchange is handling that it doesn't matter too much to you. While the certification is valid take it for refill just like a new tank. Repeat for generations. Your great grandchildren can be using the tank you found on the side of the road as a child with this method, not the same steel obviously, but the same tank credit.

Evening JR. Good video, great information. If/when the lights go out for between a year to forever, eventually all our electric/energy producing equipment will give out, go out...all our fuels for cooking, vehicles, lighting, heat, will run out. Then equipment and items do break, wear out. I advocate for people to also prepare to eventually lose all "modern" ways of doing things, so recommend people also stock up and learn ways of living without the modern conveniences.

    Here's a bit if how I store gas it's a bit long:
    1) I use non ethanol gas
    2) I add both Sta-bil and PRI-G into the gas can.
    3) Lable the can of when you filled it.
    4) Rotate gas once a year.
    5) When rotating the gas into my car I add and Extra shot of PRI-G. And mix gas In can by shaking the can with cap on.
    6) When I add the gas Into my car's gas tank I also add 1 bottle of Dry gas AND Oxtane Booster.
    7) Drive car for 1 mile or more.
    This works great for me.
I have 12 cans each with a different month written on them. Easy to plan
    Just my 2 cents
    Good luck

    Hello from Australia
To eliminate the smell that comes from using kerosene in lamps or heaters I add eucalyptus oil added to the kerosene
You can also add citronella oil, but I only use that near an open window or outside
Other oils can be added like sandalwood which also keeps the bugs away
    Thank you

I’ve got two vehicles with large fuel tanks I try and keep full at all times. That’s my spare fuel. I’ve got up to 70 gallons of fresh fuel ready at any time. Plus what I’ve got stored.

  • @r.f.pennington746
    @r.f.pennington746 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

Good vid. I actually gave up on the 15lb propane exchange bottles rather quickly (Amerigas, Rhino, etc). Did about five exchanges and two valves simply gave up on me, one resulting in setting the tank outside the cabin and letting it blow all night...total loss. Went to Tractor Supply--but can find tanks everywhere--and got me two new 30lb tanks. At nearly 70, I can still lift a 30 pounder, fill them for less than I exchanged 15 pounders for.
On gasoline, we're blessed (unless it exceeds 118°) to live in the desert. I can add fuel stabiliser and it will last for a year and a half before rotating. I judge efficacy via miles per gallon and have never seen a drop in mileage. I do buy alcohol-free gas when I can for the storage. Made this next comment before: I don't tally how many gallons I have, I tally miles. I like to keep 300 miles worth of gas in storage.
And on refilling the little one pound propane bottles: if a bottle doesn't get filled 'full' I don't sweat it. Just use it and refill it otra vez. If the Schrader valve fails, discard it. Push come to shove, it's easier to find places to stuff a dozen or so little green bottles in a vehicle than it is to heft a 20lb tank into the vehicle. I have one pounders that I've refilled over a dozen times and still going strong.

      @diypreppertv  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

Hi Pam! The safest place to store propane is outside, in a well-shaded and ventilated area. You could store them in a deck box with holes drilled in the bottom to allow any leaked gas to escape. Thanks for watching!

@diypreppertv Thank you so much for taking the time to answer me. I was thinking about getting a large propane take instead of a bunch of small cans . It's super hot here in the south. I have seen propane stored outside stores, so I guess it would be ok . I live in a townhouse, so space is seriously limited . Again, thanks for all you do . I received my copy of the survival guide as well . Great information.

I live in a high rise - my husband thinks he can use the generator we have stored on our balcony (he bought it previously for work) - I'm trying to tell him that we cannot use it and fuel would be gone. I do have an eliminator with marine battery which works well but I think I will order an Oupes. He'll want it once he sees it and we can have the convo about the gas generator again. I saw a portable fan that charges by USB so we can use our power sources for other things. thanks for list of more energy preps

If you build at least a 48 volt battery bank, with 100 ah, and have solar hooked up to it. On non sunny days, you can charge them with a generator, the gen’s will only take about a couple of hours to recharge them depending on how dead they are. But a good bank that size can power up to 1k watts for about 5-6 hours, longer if you drop your wattage. That way you’re not having to burn fuel just to power a small light bulb or small appliances.

A great suggestion, (sorry forgot the channel) purchase twelve 5 gallon fuel cans label them and rotate each month. Start with 2 and rotate every 6 months if 12 is too much to start with. Dump the fuel not used for the month in the car/truck and refill. This way long term storage becomes less of an issue as gas will last generally 1 year with little maintenance. Having 60 gallons on had will run a generator for a long time, or provide extra range to bug out.

Propane: "Taste the meat, not the heat!" Lol!
Heavy, bulky tanks that are difficult to refill during post storm conditions. I have 5 tanks, I use them for cooking, my generator isn't duel fuel.
I have refilled the 1 gallon tanks in the past. But it seems like they often leak. I've been asking for the refiillable ones as gifts on special occasions.
I'm in Houston. I usually have 20-25 gallons of gasoline stored. I use Sta-bil and I'm convinced that it works. I have used gasoline that was 12-18 months old. But I prefer to use it within 6. I run it thru my suv. I have a large fuel tank, and I mix about 5 gallons per half tank every now and then.
Ditto on a comment you made. Even if you don't have a generator, in many cases, post disaster, gas is hard to come by. Store 5 to 10 gallons, just in case.
I also have hurricane lamps. I store liquid parrifin over kerosene because it doesn't smell bad when used indoors, and it has a longer shelf life. Kerosene does burn brighter though.
I've also picked up hurricane lanterns when I found high quality ones on sale. They are far more wind resistant than hurricane lamps. But lamps put off more light indoors, IMO. In hindsight, ap]p few hurricane lanterns should have been my first light source.

Hello! If you're using the smaller portable Buddy heater, then a 1-pound bottle should last for 3 hours on high and 6 hours on low. A big buddy will only get around 1.5 hours on high using one bottle since it has two burners. Also, I agree. Get the adapter hose. It will make the process a lot easier.

Any suggestions for how a short lady can lift a 5 gal metal can to fill a car? Great idea but execution is problematic

✌️😜 Great breakdown on fuels Brother,& don't care for kerosene either as it's scent permiates everything especially clothing. If it's shtf you don't want to run into others who are without,& smell that you are with what they need ⚔️💒 God Bless us All 🇺🇸🙏✝️
