“September 8th. We descended, guided by the green stupor of the furious and deafening river. I cleaned the faint crack in the center and the small protuberances on both sides of the rock. Clouds of dust mingled with the pink quarry and the white lichen that inhabits it. I knew that the greatest challenge would be to enhance the desire, to manage the anxiety of crawling slowly and uncertainly, over smearings and mantles that lead nowhere. I didn't know the protections because I hadn't tried them before, but I had a good notion that for the crux they would be small stoppers mostly... The waves, falls, whirlpools, countercurrents, everything happened at the same time as I pushed the rock motionless with the palms of my hands, petrified."
