  • It´s one suggestion how to get into it with time if you are not super bendy and flexible like a contortionist. Obviously there are many more possibilities, but these five steps work great for me. They work without props and you dont need to leave the mat, so you stay in the flow of the practice. You can practice one step at a time and slowly work your way into all of the five steps until you reach the full posture.
The five steps help me a lot to prepare better for this super intense backbend. In the end it feels amazing and I have no problems at all in my lower spine, unlike so many other Ashtangis I meet on my way...
So give it a go... 👍 and practice safely!!!
If you have questions... ask... : )

I'm not able to do both yet, but would kapotasana be easier or harder than doing urdhva dhanurasana from standing (aka dropback)?

Kapotasana is harder! Just practice the backbending sequence of the second ashtanga series from Shalabhasana until Laghuvajrasana for a while and make it nice easy, soft and flowing. Then try out the five steps in the video for Kapotasana. Take your time... It needs time! Of course Urdhva Danurasana is obligatory at the beginning of finishing. Dropbacks are great but need confidence and expertise. Both comes with practicing the various backbends in the second series on a regular base. Practice Uddiyana, Agni Sara and Nauli! It will sharpen your understanding for the necessary dynamics of your physical centre in order to bend back safely! All the best!

Cool! Thanks for the reply Christian. I will look into all of this. Also, I've been wondering, do you do any other regular physical excercise besides vinyasa yoga? Cause you look kinda strong. Namaste.

Lots of handstanding!!! That´s my addiction... But no... nothing else... I´ve been practicing for nearly 20 years... : )
