The 1st thought came into my mind while listening to this song was my Grandmother's stories she use to share with me ............. One of the most profound stories was : The red stripes on the American flag represented the blood that use to run down their faces after getting beat by the police , ....... The stars was what they seen when they got hit in their head with the sticks........ and the white part was the obvious : She said don't ever give allegiance to a flag that ( HATE ) you , give allegiance to " THE MOST HIGH GOD " who will deliver you from the hand of your enemy and land of captivity .

Slavery still exists in the world just like it did then. Mauritania didn’t even outlaw selling slaves until the 1980s, and didn’t ban owning them until 2007, then had to do it again in 2015. It’s still rampant there. Look it up.

" If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free. I am telling you the truth, whoever commits this sin is the slave of sin, and a slave does not abide in the house forever, but a son abides forever. Therefore if the son makes you free, you shall be free indeed "

      Hi
You are forgetting the Biblical Exodus from EGYPT happened in Old Testament times and YHWH sent Moses of the tribe of Levi to lead the children of Israel ( twelve tribes of Semitic like also the Arabs olive skinned Hebrews) to the land promised to Abraham the Syrian by YHWH 4 generations before! Shalom to us only in Christ Yeshua returning soon to reign over the world government from Jerusalem! He is also an olive skinned Semite!

I love the song, but don’t like what’s being done to it right now. It’s a song of soulful depth, that’s meant to be sung with from the core in purity of heart.
All the vocal gymnastics, with the desire to give it a fanciful superficial gloss here, is killing the soulful depth for me, and doesn’t reflect the purity of heart it’s normally associated with.
Our ancestors created it in a spirit of raw soulful earthiness.
