Curious about what happened to Homestar Runner and the Strong Bad Emails? Take a nostalgic trip down memory lane and discover the history behind these iconic internet classics!
Most recently, Matt Chapman was the credited writer of two episodes of "Teen Titans GO!" that premiered in March of this year. And, yes, until I looked it up I had no idea that they were still making new episodes of "Teen Titans GO!".
I forget that there are people now who don’t know what this stuff is and was streaming Poker Night at the Inventory in discord and was confused when people didn’t know who Strongbad was 😂
I’ve been together with my girlfriend for a decade, and just last month I found out she had never seen Teen Girl Squad. Also, I’d like to shout out “Strong Bad Sings and Other Type Hits.”
@@SuddenlyAHero me too. Of course there is more one can say about hsr but sometimes it’s enough to make a nice 5 minute video about it. There are not enough entertaining 5 minute clips on TH-cam anymore so keep it up.
Anytime a Homestar retrospective shows up on my Recommended, I will always click it. I was hesitant with this one given that it's not from an established TH-cam channel but ummm...you should be?? This is very high quality! You just gained a subscriber :)
@@SuddenlyAHero I had to look it up too (I didn't know the Linguistic term), but it really makes for good comedy because exaggeration, unexpected specificity, and subversion of expectations. Something like "The fiercest of grandmothers"
I think it's so cool that it all started out as just a fun little experiment to see what they could do and it transformed into something that changed their lives and left such a lasting impression on a generation.
As a millennial who didn't have the internet until I was nearly an adult, it's strange to know how much of this I absorbed through cultural osmosis and know about simply from existing at the same time as others
Always happy to see more Homestar Runner retrospectives out in the wild. Nowadays as far as web animation goes it's always Murder Drones this or Digital Circus that, and while those are pretty great series, where's the H*R love? I mean, while not THE very first web animated series, it's still super important, and without it we wouldn't have many of the other web animated shows that are more popular today! Also, that closing bit with Strong Bad reminds me of when he decided to give a secret message to all bike thieves in the SBEmail where he was asked what he would do if he attempted to steal someone else's bike. That caught me off guard the first time I watched that one!
I'm glad to hear it! Those series are great and I understand why they get so much love. It's a new era though and a lot of people don't even know what Homestar is! That's one of the reasons I started this series; I want to share this stuff to help other generations discover it for the first time. I'm glad you stayed until the end! The end of SBEmails were some of my favorite parts and I tried to match that energy as a sort of thank you for people who stuck around until the end.
I still get the lightswitch rave song stuck in my head from time to time. No one else understands because they weren't chronically online back then like I was 😂 Edit: Also, RIP Flash. You got me through my late teens and early twenties.
What happened to HomestarRunner? Flash died and they were working on other projects. They still do stuff on twitter and get a video every few monthsa of so. Calling it now, there will be another Decemberween video on youtube. The HomestarRunner crew is alive and well, just slower than usual [EDIT:] 2 days after posting this comment Homestarrunner has posted a new video. Never sleep on The Brothers Chaps. I'll say it again, alive and well!
It wasn't the start of the internet but it was still early from a technology standpoint. The internet became a part of every day life in the mid 90s but exploded with the development of broadband around the 2000s and the accessibility of computers. We've come a very long way since then! So on a timeline, I'd still say that's early internet.
@@SuddenlyAHero As someone who was there at the beginning of home computers, anything using Flash animation is not early, as there was a long era in which a cartoon could not be instantly streamed to one's computer over the Internet.
I can understand but I don’t think they abandoned us. They still make the occasional update even after 25 years! For something that started as just a hobby by two college kids that’s pretty good.
@@SuddenlyAHero Yeah. It's hard to blame the Brothers Chaps for ending weekly updates of the website in favor of TV animation, especially after Mike (and possibly Matt) started having children. And the 2010s was a real golden age of TV animation, too. It's a credit to the enduring popularity of Homestar Runner that people still care about it even though they've only made an average of 1-2 cartoons a year over the last decade plus.
@@SuddenlyAHero When you suddenly stop uploading, and don't say a word, you've been abandoned. And, "occasional update?" Man. We went from a minimum of a few things per month, to "sales in the shop" and one or two things a year. And it's always "commemorative" things like Decemberween, never anything creative like in the old days. It was awful what they did, and how they treated their fans. It hurt.
My wife had to hear me say "todaybor day is labor day" no less than a hundred times a week ago. Yes, I remember HSR.
Yep
It’s wild how those lines from 20 years ago are ingrained in us now
Labor daybor
a jorb well done
My Instagram picture was the screen shot of that.
Worth mentioning there is a Trogdor board game. It's pretty cool.
That IS cool! I’m getting more into board games lately so I might have to check that out.

And, yes, until I looked it up I had no idea that they were still making new episodes of "Teen Titans GO!".
Both of those things are shocking to me! I love that (I wish they'd bring back the original Teen Titans though).

One of my Gen Z friends said that this was his first introduction to Homestar! It’s now my personal goal to educate him on the early internet.
I’ve been together with my girlfriend for a decade, and just last month I found out she had never seen Teen Girl Squad. Also, I’d like to shout out “Strong Bad Sings and Other Type Hits.”
Wow I hope you made things right and showed her!
Wave-O-Babieeesssss
This unlocked something deep in my brain
Thanks for making the video only five minutes. You kept it short and entertaining
I'm glad you appreciated that! I love learning things on TH-cam but sometimes I just don't want spend 30mins watching a video.
Personally I find that annoying. A topic this nostalgic and broad deserved at least a 25 minute video at the least.

As a growing channel, that's honestly the biggest compliment. Thank you!
Hey look, I'm a teenager who likes Homestar Runner and my birthday is tommorow! 🎉
Happy early birthday!
One thing that the Brothers Chaps did really well that I don't see much is partitive superlative (IE: "The teeniest tiniest of babies?!?".
I'll be honest I had to look up "partitive superlative". I wonder why they did that though?

just like Widdle Brudder, they made it on their own! Good for them.
I think it's so cool that it all started out as just a fun little experiment to see what they could do and it transformed into something that changed their lives and left such a lasting impression on a generation.
I think everyday I find a reason to say “Let’s do this like Brutus.”
I’m glad other people are still constantly quoting HSR too!
😂😂😂 I lost it at the strong bad voice. I love homestar!!!
I can't believe the actual Strongbad agreed to do my intro!
I lost it at the comment about the strong bad voice. I love comments about the strong bad voice!!
Homestar Runner is almost 25 years old... That nearly gave me a heart attack lol
Am.. am I old?!
As a millennial who didn't have the internet until I was nearly an adult, it's strange to know how much of this I absorbed through cultural osmosis and know about simply from existing at the same time as others
It was a weird time! Internet culture was wildly popular but it wasn't as constantly integrated into our lives yet.
First time I saw Strong Bad without planning to check in Dust Puppies or demons who come in buckets.
Making me cry over here man...Gonna go marathon homestar tonight!
Do it!!
I watched these with my GenZ kids when they were... kids. And maybe I also watched it when they weren't around.
That's awesome! I'm glad you're sharing Homestar with the younger generations. I bet they even introduced it to a few friends!

gotta love homestar runner

started in the year 2000, wouldn't call that "early internet"
It is for the smallest of children

Paper, come on down and meet your new brother.

less than 5 minutes is not nearly enough time to cover the topic of Homestar Runnner properly.
Some people prefer more easily digestible content! Lots of great 30min videos though if you have the time
It’s Dot Com!!!!
I’m Homestar and this is a website!
