Wow. I have never seen a soloist with so much raw energy. The dramatic movements, the jumping about, and who could forget the one handed G at the end. Easily the best interpretation of my favorite concerto by one of my favorite composers.
Hohes Lob an alle Beteiligten.
I was a clarinet prodigy before severe illness took that life away from me. This brings tears to my eyes. It was my favourite piece to play as a 14 yr old… and this is exactly how I wanted to sound- absolutely perfect on every level. And he’s wrangling a whole orchestra on his own while he does it! Brilliant. Nostalgia burning hard… but absolutely brilliant. Tears flowing.
I agree. Weber's Clarinet Concerto No. 1 is my favorite piece for clarinet. A lot of others come in second place, but man the length (almost exactly a POMODORO), the excitement, the working of themes, the choral development, the play of excitement, and then the subsequent playing off a lyrical chorus are absolute masterpieces. The performer, Joerg Widmann, is an entertainer - in the best sense of the word. Conductor, enjoyer, bringer of joy, performer. I enjoyed his performance. My only criticism is that the third section (Rondo, Allegretto) is performed too fast. The other musicians are really working hard and do a masterful job, but they have a difficult time of maintaining the beat during the challenging sections, performing the nuances that could be done if it was slowed down just a bit. The soloist, Joerg, performs the piece masterfully at that tempo, sure. But, you wonder what he could have done with all of the piece's lyrical qualities if the speed had been slowed down a bit. If the speed had been slowed a bit, I feel some more musical interpretation could have been gained. But, I really enjoyed this interpretation of von Weber's musical masterpiece.
Yes very fresh and energetic indeed. I also felt he was going a bit too fast for the orchestra in some sections, but I'm splitting hairs really. A very enjoyable and lively performance 👏
MAN what a clarinet soloist!! I played in middle and high school doing every single activity I could get my hands on. Miss doing it daily, but I do get it out every once in a while. BRAVO Jorg and the rest of the orchestra!
The interaction between the soloist and the orchestra is palpable and more than that which might be achieved by merely conducting. A flow seems to emanate from the music.
¡Extraordinario!
Alles in allem dennoch sehr gelungen!
I attended the Royal College of Music as a MMus student in performance (clarinet) , and whilst I appreciate that an interpretation of a piece can be dependent on one’s own taste, in my opinion, the tempo that he chose absolutely killed the piece. Playing a piece at a super fast speed does not equal greatness. It lost so much feeling and musicality throughout. I have competed against so many clarinetists who were technical masters but lacked that flair of musicality. Needless to say that technicality did not triumph over musicality. Moreover, a marriage of both is essential.
Not sure which tempo you mean since there are so many, but ok. Widmann has his own take on Weber and I personally find it very refreshing most of the time. If you want to talk about tempos that are so fast that they rob the music of their beauty I would say Martin Frost fits the bill better - not always but way too often!

Amazing performance!!!! 👏👏👏
Großartig. Vielen Dank. DerKlariNette
What a master piece. Plaid with perfection
Molto curata l’interpretazione, bel suono e tecnica fluida e pulita, grande clarinettista, tantissimi elogi anche all'orchestra.
Mille Grazie!
Just simply superb
Thank you!😊
Super.......Gratulation.......

The tempo in the rondo is strange. Mr. Widmann seems to want to get home quickly...

Humbling! I see what a mediocre clarinetist I was.

I totally agree. It was a macho travesty. A horse race farce.
👏👏👏
