  • Discussion by David C. Ward, co-curator of "Hide/Seek" and Historian at the National Portrait Gallery.
Even as a minimalist, Felix Gonzalez-Torres also had a whimsical, humanistic side that showed the influences of pop art on his installations. In this "portrait" of his deceased partner, Ross Laycock, Gonzalez-Torres created a spill of candies that approximated Ross's weight (175 lbs.) when he was healthy. Viewers are invited to take away a candy until the mound gradually disappears; it is then replenished, and the cycle of life and death continues. While Gonzalez-Torres wanted the viewer/participant to partake of the sweetness of his own relationship with Ross, the candy spill also works as an act of communion. More darkly, the steadily diminishing pile of cheerfully wrapped candies shows the dissolution of the gay community as society ignored the AIDS epidemic. In the moment that the candy dissolves in the viewer's mouth, the participant also receives a shock of recognition at his or her complicity in Ross's demise.
"Hide/Seek: Difference and Desire in American Portraiture" was on view at the National Portrait Gallery, Smithsonian Institution, from October 30 through February 13, 2011

Didn't he want the candies to be continually replenished? that changes the meaning of the work, I don't think the original work was about cannibalism. I think it was about creating a memory of his lover that was to be shared and to last an infinity.

Its cannibalism the way catholics take the euchrist, a life affirming sacrament.

not all the spills are meant to be replenished. g-t was a minimalist, the art work would be clearly defined in the artist statement/contract/instructions.

I mean the point of this piece was for it to diminish just like his partner did... Yeah. It sounds gory. But that's just art. It's meant to express how the artist feels, and in this case, he watched someone he loved slowly disappear into nothing, and one day that corner is going to be empty, but have so so much meaning.

What a beautiful tribute. Having lost the love of my life to AIDS I had a very difficult time containing my emotions. Bravo

I saw this work when I was 16, so years after his death. The candy is definitely replenished. I just thought it was pretty.

CAMP: A sensibility that revels in artifice, stylization, theatricalization, irony, playfulness, and exaggeration rather than content, as Susan Sontag famously defined the term in her short essay, "Notes on 'Camp.

Ok, art is not for everyone. It’s not a problem, everyone is in to different things.
Whether you find value in it or not means nothing to if it does or doesn’t have value to others.
And that ultimately makes it so your opinion on this meaningless,
as mine or any one elses opinion on anything you may enjoy also pretty meaningless.
And to me that is part of why I like art,and the process of that can be in some cases considered art as well.
But ultimately it reminds me that all of this the entirety of existence is both subjective and mostly devoid of meaning.

Did you even to the explanation of the piece??? Did you even listen to why Torres made this piece??? Sure, maybe this type of art isnt for you, but for fucks sake dont claim its meaningless. How would you like it if you made a piece of art for person you loved and cherished who had died a slow and painful death and people but went 'Oh, its a stupid piece of art, its useless.'???

It’s a representation of the artist’s partner and the way AIDS destroyed someone sweet and vibrant and lovely, yet Ross alway gave the artist joy. If you’ve ever lost someone you love deeply to an illness, think in terms of that.

"i hate art" my dude, you have a car in your profile pic. the auto industry was severely influenced by post-modernism and dadaism, and the creation of art objects in manufacturing. there wouldn't be fancy cars without the very art you claimed to hate.

You didn't listen to the curator's explanation, did you? I also hate modern art. However, this particular piece holds significance for me due to its history and what it meant to the artist before he died of the same disease depicted by these candies
