    Why TO and NOT TO Buy Shinko 804-805 Big Block Dual Sport Adventure Tires is a new Shinko 804 805 review on the dead horse topic of the Shinko Big Blocks. BUT I never hear anyone bring this point up when talking about dual sport tires as it relates to the 804 805’s. Which is odd because after running these adventure tires for 5 whole sets I’ve had the same experience every time. It’s a pretty significant point so I decided to go ahead and do the review. Hope you get some valuable data that helps you with your selection of dual sport adventure tires

    I am running them now on my f800gs. I find the front really nervous on the highway compared to the e09 and e07 which i previously ran. Grip appears to be better offroad than the e07 but not the e09 (obviously as it is 80% off road.) Not sure i would do the shinkos again though the price is right.

      I’m looking into the E09. Have heard great things. The 804 805’s have only ever been great... for the price. A lot of flaws in their game. A decent tire but has it shortcomings

    Welp, I just got a pair of these for 150 bucks :D Although I might not even run into the same problem as you, so I'll consider myself lucky. I've got SM wheels to swap out with for when I'm doing long rides and I'm in new england so it rarely even gets that hot here. And as always, thanks for all this excellent content!

      Thanks man. Ya. I was pretty harsh to the tire in that video. It’s true what I said but I should’ve given them more credit. It’s a decent and super fair priced tire but it is susceptible to heat for certain. And those dang shallow cuts. Other than that it’s a good tire. I hope you get some life out of them. If you’ve never had them before let me know what you think of them after a time.

    Have you noticed any excessive wear in hot weather riding on the 805? ( Like way more than normal)

    • @fmscott2
      @fmscott2 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I came to the same conclusions that you did on the 804 and 805. I have them mounted on my Tiger 800. Rode 5 hours on the interstate across Georgia in August and roasted the rear. It was in the 90s and when I stopped for gas the rear looked like I had been doing burnouts. When I rode back home it was cool and rainy and didn’t have the same issue. The 805 is definitely susceptible to high-heat. Also agree with the poor side grip. They do great in the sand and loose dirt. At least they step out predictably so it’s not a surprise to me when it happens.

  • @johnhax8131
    @johnhax8131 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    On the other hand I had the exact same problem with the much more expensive TKC80. Hot weather and asphalt just seems to decimate big block treads.

    • @StoryMotoADV
      @StoryMotoADV  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That’s a fact man. Softer compounds just get munched by heat. I’d imagine that a hard compound block is kind of dangerous you know. A lot of slidey knob edges you know. So while I do get that a softer compound is likely the way to go there it certainly does destroy the tire life potential.

    I pretty much agree, I loved these tires at first, I could corner like a hooligan scraping pegs, and could tear it up offroad. But after about 3,000 miles the rear was flat across the middle! I guess thats what happens with soft rubber! Im gonna give the Mitas E07 rear a try next.....

    • @StoryMotoADV
      @StoryMotoADV  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Be sure to look for the DAKAR. the E07+ is a good tire but it doesn’t last as long as the E07 standard or Dakar. Note that when you are shopping. What bike and tire size is it?

  • @kevinsterner9490

    I’m going to disagree.I live in Phoenix and ride in above 100 degree weather. I have run Kenda Big Blocks , TKC 80’s and now the Shinko 804/. 805. I get more mileage on my rear 805 than the TKC or the Kendas. My last rear on my Africa Twin lasted 4,500 and could have gone 5,000 but I was going on a big trip so I changed it. I got similar mileage with the Shinkos on my F800 GS. I have heard about the side traction issue but only in mud or wet grass. On pavement I have not had an issue. I have heard great things about the Mitas and have considered them. I do hear they get excellent mileage. I have read reviews that the EO7 plus or Dakar is not as good as the original which had the center rib down the middle. Nice video, keep them coming

    • @StoryMotoADV
      @StoryMotoADV  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      A lot of people love the 805 and I really did too. What I ran into ultimately is that when that siping does wear down... Which happens at about 25-30% worn... the tire has no lateral grip factors remaining. In hairy hard turns it slips. Not like steady drifting slip, I’m talking about a jerky slip you know.... an announced one that makes you nearly crap your pants.

      @nigelwolfe6150 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I wonder if the compound has changed or if the sizes with the higher load ratings has a different compound? I just did 800+ miles (400 of those in 101f temps by death valley) on my 1250GS and the rear seems normal in regards to wear. Yes it did show some wear but so did the Karoo IIIs I took off (the karoos actually wore faster) earlier this year (I hated those tires on pavement).

  • @aronpoindexter8709
    @aronpoindexter8709 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I just got done watching a review of these tires from another guy who had them on a triumph tiger who said he did 60%-40% road-trail in ARIZONA (hot) and had 5,000 miles on the tires without hitting the tread sensors and gave a great review. I just don’t feel like “I recked my bike” and “my tread went fast” is empirical enough evidence to shit on these tires, but maybe that’s just because I’m really looking forward to putting them on my bike and don’t want to face the truth lol I think anyone should expect these tires to wear faster than true street tires on hot asphalt because that’s not what they’re meant for. I’ll definitely be putting them on my bike and I’ll go let you guys know what I find out.

  • @itsallabouttheridekeepingi4449
    @itsallabouttheridekeepingi4449 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I Agee the 805 does have side traction issues I think it’s a ok rear for riders that don’t ride fast off road , and obviously doesn’t last that long my rear was gone at around 3000 miles . I also agree that the front is better, lasts longer but still has side traction issues. But the the 50/50 rider ( or less ) good for the price . Theses days I’m a BIG fan of the Motoz Rear Iv used the Motoz Tractionatior ADV its pretty good off road ( until your down to the last 500 mile wear ) and good on road quite ( but not good on wet asphalt) I am now running the Motoz Desert HT fantastic grip off road “ in all terrain “ but noisy as hell on road . I’m about to try the Motoz Rallz- it supposed to be the perfect off and on road by all reviews. Front I swear by the M21 a tyre that’s been around for years and it’s fantastic on and off road in all conditions it doesn’t look like it would be on but IS . And long wear .

    • @StoryMotoADV
      @StoryMotoADV  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree with every word you said man. Including the Motoz interests. I am going to check them out. Which do you recommend I should try - KTM 690, pretty aggressive riding style and get in some hairy stuff from time to time. But still do heavy miles paved miles also -- any input to that is appreciated. About the riding styles and how the 805 performs.... you hit BINGO. HA. A lot of people agreed and disagreed with my take on FB. It occurred to me that if a rider isn’t prone to push the bike they won’t experienced the shortcomings of that tire. So it only makes sense that many would disagree in the genre of adventure riding because many don’t ride aggressively like those of us that dual sport adventure tour as we call it. About the M21. I ran it once and loved its performance. It cupped really bad really quickly though so I never ran it again.... however.... in retrospect I don’t think I gave it a fair shake. I think I was to blame and at the time didn’t factor that. I recall on that trip being really bad about returning my pressure to normal after getting out of the dirt. The trip had very high paved miles too. I think I may have destroyed it myself running it long and hard on pavement with very low pressure. I might give it another whirl. Are there any of the Motoz as a set that you recommend or just the rears. I haven’t ran an actual matched set of tires in literally 18 years. Haha. It’d be interesting to find one

      @@StoryMotoADV if your doing say 50/50 riding I would go the Motoz Rallz rear or Golden GT 723/823 and I still love my M21 front .But your right about putting your pressures back up . I generally just leave my pressures around 25 -30 psi rear now as with heat that will increase around 3 psi , front around 20 psi . ( unless I’m riding desert 🏜 sand or real sloppy red clay mud . But the Dunlop D606 is cheaper than the Rally and Goldentyre and performance there isn’t much in it . It will only last around 500 miles less . But as we have said mate this can all change on style of riding , terrain , how mush asphalt you do etc and how much you spin up the rear wheel . M21 rears are CRAP 💩, don’t last . My mates ride T7, Husky 701 , 790,890 KMT’s DR650, and then our enduro bikes KTM 500,s etc . So we always throw our comments around to each other on tyres .

People who don’t push their bike don’t ever feel it slip. People that do, do. I think that ends up being the bottom line on the matter you know. Some people are doing the Long Way Around thing, while others are doing the Toby Price thing. Haha. Big difference there in how a tire will perform. Not used these tires but agree with your thoughts on the 805 tread pattern not offering good lateral grip off road.
    I ran a set of Pirelli Scorpion Rally STR on 1200GS. Great road tire. So-So off road with FA lateral grip.
    The 804 tread pattern looks OK but the 805 looks exactly like the Pirelli rear, with likely the same lack of lateral grip.
    It makes me wonder how much test riding tires get before being released.

    • @StoryMotoADV

      I agree man. When I first got the tire I was like.... hmmm.... I’m no engineer but that looks prone to some serious slippage as time goes on. I had a lot of people on Facebook disagree swearing it holds for them as well as any tire. The fact would be that their riding style doesn’t push the tire because the truth of the matter, objectively, is that there is nothing left to hold it very soon into the tires tread life. It’s not an opinion or subjective observation. Haha. There’s nothing there but racing slicks for lateral hold. Great paddles for forward movement... but side to side... notta . I ride a lot around Vegas with a friend who runs. He complains about heat causing it to wear down prematurely too. Moreso even than other tires I mean.

      I think it has A LOT of fans because it really does check up on and off road. That fact increases it consumer base. I think it does so well on road because it is a soft rubber compound. It’s really sticky. But I also think that’s it’s high heat conditions down fall too. If more people really ran that tire in heavy heat I think it would be more well known that the tire is susceptible to it.

    80 bucks on Amazon for a tire groover. Solves the 805 problem.

      how well does grooving the tire work?

      @@MericanSlav it doesn’t change the characteristics of the tire. Will notice a 5% improvement in traction off-road.

      What bike you running them on? Don’t get me wrong it’s a good tire, hell a great tire if the price is factored but I just can’t forgive that loss of lateral traction when that siping wears. And the heat makes it happen fast you know. I’d be curious to hear your take on it man. Keep us posted if you remember or have the time. Hope they serve you well.

    What pressure were you running at? I found it was a much better tire at lower pressure, handled better, much quieter and worn less quickly. Hard to beat for the price but might just try that Mitas.

      Across the board pretty much. Low on dirt, higher on pavement. I do like the tire but that lateral traction issue is a deal killer. You really should try the Mitas. Such a great tire man. Let me know if you do.

    I live in Washington and don't go outdoors if it's above 85°F😉
    Love the 804 front, I find the Michelin Anakee Adventure a good rear for my Super Tenere.
