  • Patara has one of the most beautiful beaches in Turkey, but it's also the site of one of the most important ancient ruins and the oldest known lighthouse in the world !
    2020 was voted the year of Patara, this is to include the rebuilding of the historic lighthouse.

    I went to Patara last year in August it was boiling hot and yes I burnt my feet on that beautiful soft sand. Beautiful beach. Managed to see the sun set which was amazing. Quiet simple place good for recharging and getting away ❤️

    Work has started to restore the lighthouse. I saw it from the sand dunes in August. They have a crane to lift the massive blocks.
    I hope to return next May to get a closer look. Wonderful place.

    Thanks Mick, such an interesting video. I love these old ruins. Sixty years ago when I lived in Adana there were hardly any excavations done. All along the coast you could find pieces of history, ornamental pillars, arches, sarcophagus (empty ones). We liked to climb around among the debris and rocks and wonder who has lived there all those years ago. In Adana we saw that they used old pillars to make cement.
    After Adana we moved to Libya and there we could visit the old cities of Sabratha and Leptis Magna. I wish I could go back to Turkey and see the excavation today, but our border is still closed (Australia) and who knows if it will be open next year? I am now 79 and travelling gets harder by the year.

      I saw a few emthy sarcophagus during my hike on st Nicholas Island in June 2019, it was part of my Gulet cruise stops

  • @worldcitizeng6507

    My tour guide/Gulet captain told us that St Nicholas Island was the birth place of st Nicholas( not too far from the butterfly valley/ further north) I will research more into this, very curious 👀 . St Nicholas Island is so remote & small, but the Turkish museum pass still allows me to enter. It was a tiny gate watch by a nice old man, I told him I left my museum pass on my Gulet and he just let me walked thru. I saw a few ancient empty graves on the grounds, as we hike up to watch sunset. My pictures looked like it was taken at Bali 's Island.

      @worldcitizeng6507 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mickandtrudie I see... would you explore st Nicholas Island someday? It's such a special island but we were only given 2 hours to hike before we need to return to our Gulet for scheduled dinner. I saw a few empty stone sarcophagus on the trails. The view from top of the island was spectacular during sunset
