    • @morte2195
      @morte2195 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +34

      Yep, a little sag is inevitable, and with so little space between the gate and the posts, there will eventually be rub. A wheel supporting the gate near its end would also help things work longer.

  • @Mangler316
    @Mangler316 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Something I did to my gate install that helps a lot with sag. Buy an extra hinge pin bolt and install it so the open tube of the gate on the away end can rest on the hinge pin when closed.
    With the gate closed mark the bottom of the gate tube on the post. The drill the hole below and adjacent to the mark. Screw in the hinge bolt with the pin facing up. Now when you close the gate set the gate on the pin and the whole gate is supported on both ends.

    A lot of people don't know this but your posts will never be 'level'. The vertical is called 'plumb', the horizontal is called 'level'. Mixing the concrete in a wheel barrow would increase the strength 10x and finishing the top with a trowel would seal it from moisture penetration. It looks really nice though and the lights are terrific. The green paint is a good idea too.

    Gate looks good. The posts you have look to be rough cut so they will be 6x6. The smooth finish posts are 5.75x5.75. I would also recommend on the sides of the gate put some fencing along the front of the property. Adding a man gate would be an option. The fencing would help keep people from walking around the gate as well. As others have mentioned many times a wheel on the bottom of the gate will help but you may have to move some glavel to keep it from lifting the gate up too much. Good work.

  • @skruface
    @skruface 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    Hey Eric, couple of suggestions for your consideration:
    Next time you're pouring concrete post footings, maybe consider Sonitubes? They are cheap cardboard tubes that you put in the hole to hold the post and concrete mix. The advantage is that you can cut the tubes several inches higher than ground level, meaning it keeps water away from where the post meets the ground and tends to pool, rotting out the post.
    Secondly, consider a small roller wheel attached to the bottom of the gate will help support the weight when the gate is open, putting less stress on the post, and preventing the gate from sagging as the hinges wear.
    Thanks again for your content, I for one appreciate you sharing it with us!

    Your using the correct tool, just use the other end of the wrench to turn those in. Put the open loop of the wrench over the 90 degree bend on the screw bolt and wa-la doesn’t slip off and turns right in 👍🏽

    The gate looks great, Eric. You still might consider fencing along the road and part way down your property line. I say this because there are always some weirdos that will walk around your gate posts. Your signs are awesome,by the way.

    I used the same posts and gate at my place. However the instructions said to make the hole 12" wide vs 8" so mine has 3x the concrete. My hole was actually 12-14" wide. Had a helper put in a post and he left the opening 15'6" so my second gate overlaps...grrrrr. To screw in the screw, use a box end wrench. Putting the top one in facing down keeps the gate from being lifted off.

    yea for sag, roller (probably not so much because of gravel) or slide for bottom of gate ...for gate bolts, the hole in the end of cresent wrench (large end wrench works better maybe) slide over post for gate and tighten that way ...1 bolt going up and the other down is to keep from only having to lift the gate off the hinge to remove that end ...even tighten upper bolt to allow for sag doesn't hurt

    You shall not pass! ...said the wizard. I agree with the wheel suggestion, it's very helpful with long gates like yours. A solid wheel though, not an air-filled wheel. They wheely suck. Thanks for the video,

    quickcrete is what we used for back fence, it's only real downside is that it does not set up as hard as regular concrete in our experience. but still worth it vs. having to mix your own regular concrete.

  • @plove523

    Hmmm. I do bag of concrete, water, stir, repeat. Never tried just pouring water on top. If you have some of those giant rocks like CVK, might be good to spread a few across the front so people can’t drive around your gates. Some folks are just don’t respect privacy.

    If you hook that hole at the end of the crescent wrench on the peg you can spin it easily. The reason they are opposite is so no one can just pick up on the gate and set it off the pins

  • @stevedavis9777

    They make wheels to keep the one side up and not put pressure on hinge side.... Maybe take your circular saw a cut a step around post so mount the larger for the larger light fixture. Anyhow it't all looks awesome Eric.

  • @blackhat4968
    @blackhat4968 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Instead of using the "Jaws" of the crescent wrench... I would have used the other end, and used the "hole" on the bolt. ;)
    You don't put both Hinge bolts pointing up for security. If they were both pointing up, you could just LIFT the gate and take it off the hinge bolts and drag it open. If this was for like a farm gate, just separating fields, both up is not problem.

    Nice work Eric! As others have said though, definitely support the weight-bearing beam somehow. Sagging is inevitable especially during rainy season and then it will rub. Also as others have said, a wheel on the gate will massively help support the weight.

    If you do one again you can use the hole in the end of the crescent wrench to install the hinge pins. And the reason for putting the top one upside down is people could simply just lift your gate off the pins and use your chain on the opposite side as the hinge.

    I learned from a contractor neighbor that you just pour dry concrete in the hole and it will absorb moisture from the ground and harden. Of course, this is in Florida and not the desert. I had a bag of concrete laying on the floor of the garage for about 6 month. It became hard concrete inside the bag. I'm not sure if it absorbed moisture from the concrete or humidity in the air.

    • @JonnyDIY
      @JonnyDIY 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yeah it'll suck moisture from the humidity it air in a climate like that. Mixing concrete with water in wheelbarrow will give you stronger finished product though vs dry pour

    It's always weird to me when people get property in the middle of nowhere and then put lights all over the place. I had a neighbor in Colorado build a house across the street they had the power company put in a huge pole light that would go on every night even when it was a vacation home and they were only there a couple times a year for a couple weeks each time. Had a conversation to say the reason we live here is for dark skies and you guys have a huge light shining into our house every night. They had not even given it any thought they got that turned off and then put in a motion detection light on the house. Of course many times per night there were deer, bear or whatever setting it off. Eventually, they worked things out with my brother they would email him and tell them when they were coming, they put the motion detect on a switch that stayed off, and my brother would go over and turn it on the evening they were arriving and off when they left and he ended up shoveling the snow for a little $$ if they wanted to come in winter.
