What I love about this horse and this race, is that 99% of the people did not pick this 80 to 1 long shot, most people did not win money on Rich Strike, people lost money betting on other horses, yet we will ALL say, we love that Rich Strike won this race, and this was the greatest race we ever saw. That alone is a beautiful thing. Yet, once we learn all the facts of a truly epic great story, does not matter how invested we were initially, we fall in love with the horse, his owner, the jockey, the whole team, and the story of literally over coming ALL the odds stacked against them. The owner had a tragic barn fire 2 yrs ago, Rich Strike was purchased for $30,000, originally Rich Strike was not even supposed to be in the race, he was a last-minute fill-in for a scratched horse. Rich Strike was a 80 to 1 long shot, which made this one of the biggest upsets in Derby history. In the first few seconds of the race Rich Strike was dead last, at one point in the race it did not look like Rich Strike was going to be able to make it through the huge pack ahead of him. Against all odds, literally all odds, this horse ran down the entire field and won the Kentucky Derby. That will give a lot of people hope for themselves and others, for what we are going through in life. So even though millions of people did not win a dime on Rich Strike, we still love the fact that Rich Strike and the entire team won. This literally was the greatest horse race ever. God what you did for Rich Strike and his whole team, please do for America.
Absolutely beautifully said. This can be the synopsis for the movie. (I don't even follow horse racing, but I love this horse, the people around him, and the story.)
I know little about horses except they have characteristics especially suitable for battle. I know little about horse racing, but as an engineer love well-performing systems - very moving, and yes as a worshipper of God: WOT.
Obviously he has moved up from the middle of the jockey class to the the front seats. Even one who like myself who knows little about racing can marvel at the way he maneuvered through traffic after bursting out of the far right gate to the back of the pack and perfectly reading what was ahead of him. He handled this young --and this is a young colt--as skillfully as any race driver drives his car. The shots from above show how her perfectly timed every new move. Did not wear his horse out drung that first part and then finally burst ahead, Don’t know if the horse has what it takes for the Triple Crown, but he probably will get better with age. Really feisty, like a freshman quarterback given the chance and just coming through. But this jockey is awesome. Just a nice guy showing his stuff on a big stage.
What a great line "the field gassed themselves" Yes the pace was smoking hot, then they fell on their faces and Rich Strike ran an amazing race......I love horse racing !!!!!!!!
The jockey earned his payday on this one. He kept finding gaps in the field to make his move, there was 3 different times where he needed a break to get through, and did. They also got a little lucky the field gassed themselves in the first half or more. If there had been a little more cautious pace, maybe they would have had something left in the tank to fend of Rich Strike in the end. But they didnt.... and he ran a slow first half, and had lots left.
People keep saying the early fast pace was a factor but I don’t see it. P,us, it looked to me as if “Richie” ( if I may be so bold) was just getting started towards the end. My theory also explains his antics with the outrider.
Let me tell you something folks, Sonny Leon could be easily competing with the Ortiz brothers, he is that good. He just became the second Venezuelan jockey to win the Derby. Fifty one years ago, Gustavo Avila, from Venezuela was the winner with a horse from Venezuela called Canonero II back in 1971.
Sonny Leon rode the race of his life. He is just a journeyman jockey riding at small tracks. He can't compete with the Ortiz brothers, or Rosario, but he will have this Derby Win to keep forever. We will never hear from Sonny Leon name in Big races again.
Kentucky Derby is 10 furlongs, Preakness Stakes is 9.5, Belmont Stakes is 12. So by that measure, Rich Strike may have the greatest challenge at Preakness and potentially bury the field at Belmont.
I feel a bit disappointed that Rich Strike won’t be running the Preakness. The trainer decided to save him for the Belmont race, so now no chance for the Triple Crown 🐎
Amanda Grace at Ark of Grace Ministries had a prophecy from God about the Derby on April 9th. He doesn't mention the horse by name, but He was referring to Rich Strike. She did a video about it on Monday night on her channel.
Eric Reed is an absolute genius and mastermind behind all of this. Joe Sharp isn't a bad guy or anything, but he would have not been able to make Rich Strike the horse he is. Everything happens for a reason. Truly amazing
No one …from 5he owner…trainer downto the lowest stakeholder in the stable never dreamed nor thought that their mount will win the prestigeous KENTUCKY DERBY….even the daughter of trainer ERIC REED will be contented if the horse finished ninth….GOD LOVES THE UNDERDOG..
Sonny can barely win at unknown track called "Belterra". He had his day at the Derby, and it was once in a lifetime for Sonny Boy. He won't be heard from again. One , and Done. He may win a race , or two at the Fairs, and that's all. He was great for one day. Top jockeys look down at boy's like Sonny as a exercise rider, or bucket boy. Sonny may ride horses for exercise only. His idol is the King of Venuezeula " Javier Castellano"
Did you see that moron keep beating Rich Strike after the race ? Excuse me , what did that accomplish ? If he showed some love, maybe he could have calmed him . Continually beating him did not accomplish anything .

You're right. Almost the exact opposite. What I should've said is he really likes the Churchill dirt, especially after seeing his September race at CD. I think I reacted to his three previous races on synthetic. I learned my lesson by not looking at EVERY past performance on Rich Strike. If he had got in on Thursday I think I would have caught it. I always say look out for horses who back in late. This was just so late that I had committed to all my bets. Just glad I got that $4 exacta on him.
Doesn't anyone else find it odd that the same trainer who had enough smarts to not enter Secret Oath in the Kentucky Derby because she ran 3rd against some of the boys in the Arkansas Derby yet he didn't realize Ethereal Road wasn't good enough till the day before the Kentucky Derby when he withdrew him (he said that when asked about the scratch), which paved the way for Rich Strike ? C'mon man ! I don't believe the coincidence !
I believe it because Wayne Lucas is a good trainer. Ethereal Road had already run twice at Keeneland in April in The Bluegrass, and then Lucas wheeled him back a week later and ran in the Lexington Stakes which was only two weeks before the Derby. Lucas said when he scratched him that he wasn't pleased with how he was training, that he was flat. He did the right thing by the horse, because he raced him too hard in April.
@@suzanneyoung8011 But not until the day before the Derby ? You just said yourself he knew before hand. Real suspicious, that needs more examination than what happened to Baffert !
@@rudybetta No, it's not suspicious. Lucas is an 86 year old man that everyone admires. I'm sure he and his owner were hoping the horse could make it. They waited til the last day because there was no actual injury. He's just a good horseman who decided the horse needed more time before his next race. They decided to aim for the Preakness instead. It has no bearing on the fact that Rich Strike would win the race, other than it allowed him to get into the race. But Lucas certainly didn't scratch his horse to help Rich Strike or anybody else. It doesn't work that way. Nobody can know exactly what is going to happen when the gates open. Lucas knew he had a heavy favorite in Secret Oath for the Oaks. She proved that finishing 3rd against some good colts including his Ethereal Road in the Arkansas Derby. No one knew there would be a blistering pace in the Derby. Rich Strike's win was set up by the Japanese Horse and the other foreign horse that had also raced previously in the UAE. They had never raced over this track nor had their foreign jockeys. They went through a suicidal first half mile as if it were a 6 furlong sprint race, which allowed Rich Strike to come up the rail and pass tiring horses. Without those crazy fast frontrunners he doesn't come from behind and win. Wayne Lucas couldn't have known any of that, so nothing suspicious at all.

is this race going to change the way odds are set?
The odds are determined by how much is bet on each horse, and the track takeout.
I bet for the Preakness Rich Strike will not be an 88-1 shot

They ran 1:10.34 for 3/4 and Secretariat ran 1:09.8 for 3/4 in the Belmont!!!
