It acts as a counterbalance to keep your body in a straight line which helps with accuracy. Like JR said tho,don't let the balance arm go behind your shoulder or it will twist your frame out of lane alignment.
I have a four step approach. I'm going to practice this afternoon and I believe it's a sign that I came across this video this morning.
