We have 2 sub-species of this bird here in Lithuania. Great Bittern (Botaurus stellaris) and Little Bittern (Ixobrychus minutus). The Great Bittern population is stable (around 1000 specimens), but they are included in Lithuanian Red Book (list of endangered native species).
Are there many speciments of the tarabuso (the italian name of this bird) in Lithuania? I saw that he is even on your coin.
