  • Bar rakes typically do a better job at drying first cut alfalfa than wheel rakes.

    With the benefit of hindsight, comparing the sturdiness of the Gehl wheel rake with the Rhino is eye-opening. That was a major upgrade that you guys needed, even if the extra width is overkill.

    I run a Rowse Ultimate V Rake on a farm in Colorado, and have done so for 10 years. I have it hooked up to a John Deere 6403 which is pretty small. I usually rake at night, because we are in a desert climate, and humidity is very important. We usually let our hay dry for 7 days after cutting.

    Yup. We had a hay barn burn down because our crew bailed them while the hay was too wet.

    we ted our hay right after cutting, then at least during first cutting I'll sometimes even fluff it a second time with the tedder by using a higher gear and low rpm, and then rake it back up using a wheel rake similar to yours, been my experience bar rakes knock the leaves off of alfalfa since they are more aggressive and also [at least with our new holland equipment] the wheel rake does a better job of grabbing all the hay, we have a fairly hilly farm could be some of that I figure

    I'm so sad we can't make hay yet I Live in PA and we have to much rain to make hay. And our rake is a John deere 635 ground driven rake and we our on a hill so I have to go fast down a hill and we use a Tedder too

    Silicon Valley Custom Operator. Great Video. Bailing right after raking ? Didn't know you could do that. Always thought you had to let it dry after raking first time. Never hayed. Vineyards, Wild Flowers and Pastures mostly.

    Love your videos, brings me back to the time I was on the farm. Just wondering why your crops seem to be in strips , not in a corn field and a hay field?

    Wonder when the hay gets baled?

  • @nik5388
    @nik5388 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Do you avoid raking/baling the hay when its too dry to reduce leaf loss? In our neck of the woods we always bale in the dark when the hay is still dry but softer.

    Nice video and where you located at and I was wondering what would make your hay dry faster a tedder or a wheel rake because the farm I work on we just use a tedder and roll bar rake

    What was the percent on that hay. We have a Kuhn silage special baler and we like are hay under 60%.

    Questions from this Georgia boy? With no rain on the hay how many days did you wait to rake? Also with reasonable amounts of rain during the season how many times will you cut the alpalpha? Finally, will you get a cutting off of the hay you planted the other day?

    • @HowFarmsWork
      @HowFarmsWork  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      jbmbanter About 3 days since we wanted it to be very dry. We will try to cut it 3 times. We hope to get a cutting off of the hay we did the other day when we cut the oats forage off of it.

      Thanks Ryan. I was down at my place in the country (East Central Georgia) and it is plenty dry down there. All of the pivot irrigation systems were watering corn and some were watering peanuts. Outside temp yesterday was 99 and it hasn't rained down there in a week and a half.

    Best alfalfa hay you can get is hay you don't touch with a rake !! I'd rather bale right out of the windrow

      cody harrison and use 10 times more diesel and time? Must be good being rich enough to do that

    • @cody28h
      @cody28h 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mark I can bale it just as fast your still covering the same ground it would cost as much in fuel to pull the rake as my baler I don't see it !! Only if it gets rained on then take it

    • @mackthompson1161
      @mackthompson1161 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      cody harrison but you arent...example...a hayfeild cut ino one hundred swathes...you run your baler flat out ant 540/1000 rpm whatever baler you have up and down the field 100 times
      Example 2...Same field mowed into 100 swathes....you run your rake over it 25 times grouping 4 rows into 1 in a fast gear with the tractor idling...then you run your baler over the hay 25 times. Which uses the most time and fuel?
