      Hi my friend! I've just bought an helios 44m-7 and followed your tutorial on how to put it in manual aperture with success!
      But my focus ring is not working and it looks like it has no grip over the lens which does not come in and out.
      Do you think that I have to go throught the whole disassembly process or I can just repair it from the front?

    Excellent tutorial - so clear, so comprehensive and so easy to understand. Your English is excellent, and I'm in awe at your camera work, always focused on the lens and what you're doing. The focus ring on my Helios 44M-7 was slipping while turning at infinity and close up, and re-lubrication solved the problem perfectly. (As you warned...the tiny ball bearing fell out, but thankfully I found it!!). Many thanks

I have taken the front element off and dropped isopropanyl on the blades, then worked them with the lever at the back... it frees them for a while but they soon become sticky again...

    Hello Retro Foto House. Very informative video.
    I have a question.
    I have found a very good looking Helios 44M-4 lens on a Zenit XP-12 camera, but the aperture blades don't move at all whether I rotate the aperture ring or the push the pin at the back. It is wide open at all times. The camera itself looks good but with some fungal growth in the viewfinder and on the mirror. Mechanically it seemed to be working fine.
    My question is if I should get it (the lens) and try to open and repair it by myself. It is going to cost me less than 10$ if I did. In fact the camera and the lens both together would cost me less than 25$.
    What would you suggest?

    • @RetroFotoHouse
      @RetroFotoHouse  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      well, it depends if you need camera. Fungal growth in viewfinder is a headache....

    • @suchitgangurde3514
      @suchitgangurde3514 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello @@RetroFotoHouse,
      Thanks for your response.
      I got the camera last week. I got the lens cleaned and set up correctly from a local camera repair shop I found that repairs analog cameras. The aperture blades had oil on them which was causing them to malfunction. The technician also cleaned the camera's mirror.
      But he said they don't undertake Russian camera repairs because of their weird setup, so that is all he could do as far as servicing goes. He also said the penta-prism is damaged, so viewing will be difficult.
      I think I might try to open and clean the fungus on the viewfinder myself.
      I also got compatible batteries today and the light meter LEDs are also lighting up when I put them in.
      Looks like it will work. I'll run a test roll through it to see how it goes. If nothing, it'll still make a great show piece at home.
      All in all a great deal for less than 30$.
      Thanks and cheers. Best wishes of Christmas and New Year!

      @@RetroFotoHouse It turns out that there are faint markings in the spots where the screws put pressure on the block to hold it down, but my aperture still doesn't actuate properly. The pusher moves freely and the aperture opens and closes with it. Is there a possibility of the brass ring that moves with the aperture ring is messed up or bent? I am quite certain that the cause of my problems is that the hook that moves the pusher and the brass ring in the rear part of the lens are out of shape. is there a way to fix this properly or do I have a dead lens?

    NB--- at 4:28, you show 3 screws to remove the rear aperture mechanism ring. I have a 44m-4 - and on my version, these 3 screws are not on the "top" like your video... they are around the SIDE of the lens... FYI. (Not sure if this is common with 44m-4?)

    The screws after the marking (11:27) are too strong. I can't unscrew them, they don't move at all. How can I solve this problem? Can I put a drop of WD (loosening oil) on the screws? And how can I put a small drop without messing the lens with that oil?

      @@RetroFotoHouse I tried but it didn't work. The screwdrivers I have are really thin, and the screws have a wide canal. The bigger screwdrivers on the other hand are too big for the screws.
      I ended up just lubricating the helicoid with some silicon oil with a syringe, I moved the focus back and forth until it got smooth enough. I could fill the dust and dirt between the threads, but it worked in the end.
      Anyway, thanks for the response and this great video, I wouldn't have done anything without your help :)

    I have such a lens. The Optical block just came out while focussing. It was not attached. with screws and threaded into the focussing block. There are four screws in the focussing block but those do not line up with the three lugs in the optical block. Name ring says Helios 44m-6 with valdai logo and serial number on body is 1992. Is this a different version? Maybe not even a 44-m6 but M4? Krasnogorsk? Picture: live.staticflickr.com/65535/50143989811_cb2c242707_4k.jpg
